> At Formal, we hate secrets. Since day one, we’ve been on a quest to drive the number of long-lived secrets in our infrastructure to zero.
Pedantry alert: Private keys are secrets.
Not defending Mr. Mark but what’s the nepotism angle to his story?
> they could load URLs, but not interact with pages or send any data
stopped reading here as this is simply not true. at the very least agents sent headers.
Anyone noticed the trend of tools being more read than write, with writes shifting to agentic tools and natural language instruction?
It makes me wonder about the web a bit and whether it becomes glossier, more video driven but ultimately less directly maleable.
Do people prefer streaming text over static pages?
This hacker entered the thread thinking this was a good idea but leaves muttering “man, things are complicated.”
funny but presumably this law predates hn. is it actually attributable to him?
full disclosure, this user did not read the article.
> processing is not recording
Debatable and definitely semantic - at the very least this requires putting the audio into a buffer, so a newly mallocd block of memory. Sure, it’s not a recording in a conventional sense, but it is a copy of data.
The World Cup is broadcast in many different languages with the same video feed. That’s likely one of the main reasons audio fingerprinting is better than video. You also get better idea of the target demographics language preferences and that leads to more relevant advertisements.
> Imagine we had that for software - "your JS is too big, you can't ship until you get it under 50 kB".
We’re one decade into cookie banners and privacy regulations by jurisdiction. There’s some vague similarities with interference here.
either way, maybe a portent for the times.
apple’s secrecy agenda has been defeated to an extent by the practicalities of ubiquitous technology?
One factoid about Norman Mailer: he stabbed his wife.
there’s probably some decent arguments on how to implement this.
Chaos theory and all but my career in tech doesn’t happen without haxor economist. My Econ major collided with it somehow and a year later ended up with a CS degree.
I was thinking more like interactive content. Do you remember when VH1 had a pop-up music video show?
Shows could synchronize additional content that’d be visible when Shazam mode enabled.
Perhaps obviously this is the same technique that enables ACR on TVs.
It occurs to me that Shazam has such a better reputation online because the intent and consent of the user is honored.
It makes me wonder if there couldn’t be an implementation on TVs that is similar and actually is a net positive for consumers. Basically would customers actually like TV ACR if the data wasn’t just going to sell more ads?
This is likely the first time I wish a page requested GPS sensor permission. It would make the visualizations even more compelling.
> on his last show on the Tonight Show, he told his audience to be kind and work hard
Conan really handled that disaster with tremendous grace and it paid immediate dividends. I can’t really think of a similar situation in popular culture. It is a good reminder of how to handle oneself especially during turmoil.
it’s the claim of it being a file system that’s throwing me. obviously nbd but maybe my mental models broken again.
> Satellite TV uses a file system called an MPEG transport stream that allows multiple audio, video, or data layers to be packaged into a single stream file.
Interesting read but that part really made me question my own sanity. It’s probably just lost in translation.
So much of the Internet is pay-walled now.
It’s sad. It never occurred to me we’d get here.
It seems to me this makes broadcast towers targets.
There’s no bottom to this line of reasoning, however.
One can always suppose the identified individual is a double, triple, quadruple agent.
Micro machines guy could be vibe coding at an absurd rate.
One theory I saw argued the punch card size was the reason for 80x24. But why were punch cards that size? They were designed off of the cards used for the census. Why were the census cards that size? Because they were modeled after the dollar bill size.
I do love thought experiments like this but do believe they’re insatiably unresolvable.
> the Internet is a bad place
FWIW - it’s made of people
> the URL slug
when will it replace the headline in editorial importance?
Thanks for doing the detective work for your friends on mobile. This fact severely diminishes the message of this medium. I’ll check for myself later; but until then, I will hope it leverages the techniques it describes.
I’m on your side with regards to the issue of flock.
So, we’re losing.
