Re:Mac App Store Apps Can Now Drop Support for Intel Macs on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @03:13AM (#49532805)
i think they gave warning way before that though. if you bought an intel mac recently, you knew?
Re:When internal hostnames are leaked to the clown on Thursday February 05, 2026 @04:23AM (#46897612)
please don't do this to your synology

leave it to serve files and iscsi. it's very good at it

if you leave it alone, no extra software, it will basically be completely stable. it's really impressive

not just not care, a lot of companies actively hate what you are doing :-(

as you say, cutthroat

Location: London, UK

Remote: Office is better, but I was remote for 5 years and could do it again

Willing to relocate: Complicated

Technologies: Java, Python, Postgres, Linux, Networking

Resume: Professional developer since 2004. Apple, Google, startups, ran an ISP. IC and management. 1st class degree from university that is number 5 for computer science in the uk.

Specifically looking for non-growth mindset, non-toxic, normal jobs. If you work weekends, please move along. If you grind people against each other in weird secretive stack ranking exercises, please also move along.

I'm nice, helpful, communicative, and open, and I would like to work in a place that expects that. Please.

Weirdly, Windows Server is a better desktop experience.

It does not ask you to play Candy Crush, for example.

Re:Why Flatpak Apps Use So Much Disk Space on Linux on Monday May 05, 2025 @01:29AM (#43892149)
shared libs happened because memory was scarce

pretty cool that we are undoing it as a design decision

but it will take a long time

an economist sees a 20 dollar note on the floor. Doesn't pick it up. If it was there, someone would have picked it up already.

maybe you're running a reverse proxy? it can direct you differently depending on how you refer to it
Re:Apple's Best Option: Decentralize iCloud on Monday February 10, 2025 @06:25AM (#42999135)
I think you're being a bit unfair here. Apple does care about security and privacy. It's part of their culture.
Re:Why are UK electricity bills so expensive? on Saturday December 21, 2024 @04:59AM (#42478668)
i like octopus' style too

but i called them to sign up, and they told me my house was two apartments. it isn't. it never has been. and when i asked them to update their data, the operator said that isn't something she can do.

i would be a customer otherwise. sigh.

Re:It's official: ADSL works over wet string on Friday May 17, 2024 @04:32PM (#40393932)
Zyxel and Fast Networks are also good on the ISP side (Not sure Fast Networks is still a thing - website seems to be down - but I run one of their DSLAMs and am happy with it)
not really

i so desperately want it to work, but it messes up often enough that it's not worth it yet

fwiw, using local intellij with nfs mounted source is a better experience

Re:Ask HN: Any LAN alternatives other than PowerLine or MOCA? on Saturday September 02, 2023 @05:24AM (#37359858)
if you have any twisted pair (or even untwisted):

https://www.netsys-direct.com/en-gb/products/kit-managed-g-f...

Works well for me (600mbit down / 400mbit up, over a single pair of cat 3)

Re:Ask HN: Getting HOA to upgrade Ethernet wiring on Wednesday June 29, 2022 @05:19AM (#31917960)
I would try two things:

(1) Running gigabit ethernet over the cat 5. Maybe it works?

(2) Look at GFast. I run a GFast service in my apartment block. We have Cat 3 (yes, 3!) cable. We can do 500mbit. You would need to buy a DSLAM.

Re:ADSL works over wet string (2017) on Sunday December 05, 2021 @06:08AM (#29448385)
BT have left a large number of people on ADSL. No VDSL upgrade.

Belkin TB3 Pro dock customer here. Is it garbage? no. Does it like to go wrong in new and mysterious ways every couple of days? yes
Re:Ask HN: Recommended 120v LED Bulbs? on Monday August 02, 2021 @05:59AM (#28034750)
I bought from this company: https://www.ksrlighting.com/ (UK based)

Very impressed with the colo{u,}r purity

You can disconnect the transformer and power with 36v DC. Dimming works well with a PWM Meanwell dimmer (0-10v input)

If you're like me and want to avoid proprietary/locked-in stuff, highly recommend doing the 0-10v thing. Your control system is then separate from what drives the lights

Re:Ubiquiti all but confirms breach response iniquity on Monday April 05, 2021 @04:28AM (#26696560)
Long-time Ubiquiti fan here

Their lack of Wifi 6 across the range, and the security problems drive me to look at alternatives. Found the Netgear WAX610. Very happy with them.

vigor 130 -

not the full web interface, but... try wireshark on it

if you have the right setting enabled, you'll find it is broadcasting its status onto the network for you to pick up

vigor's routers use this info. to show line speed etc. when using a modem via the router

Re:Windows ugly sweaters from Microsoft Xbox store on Sunday December 06, 2020 @05:14AM (#25322491)
The male/female split in our industry is something like 90%/10%. Something is wrong with the status quo and we should fix it.
London here Max. normal offering: ADSL2 only, 12mbit down, 1mbit up We had to buy a leased line for the building (1gbit down/1gbit up)

machines: I have won

humans: oh

Because 665 is a bigger number than 10 and 40

:-)

TV in Europe is 50hz

Things get sped up, slowed down or played back with jitter. It's not great. Older devices (DVD/BD players) used to change framerate automatically. Newer devices (streaming) seem to default to 60hz with an obscure Settings menu to manually change it. Nearly everyone ends up watching the content in the wrong frame rate :-(

I hear qt is excellent, but would encourage you to do distinct ui code for each platform, in that platform's native ui libs. You'll look like a fish out of water otherwise.
