Is this website biased towards any political ideology? A pop up had some political verbiage but I closed it before reading. Seems like a charged article.

Well this has been informative, thanks for sharing.

Cheers, honesty always appreciated.

Just curious and feel free to ignore... but what is your rate?
Re:Vanlife: Build your own van to live on the road on Wednesday February 06, 2019 @03:11AM (#19093538)
Well stated. My journey only last 6 months because of the constant anxiety that comes from not having a stable parking situation. You think it's going to give you freedom but it ends up being your prison
Re:Bye, Bye, Google on Monday February 04, 2019 @05:09AM (#19075149)
How did you change the two factor authorization codes from Google Authenucator? I think they are needed for crypto sites like Kracken.
What? Why would anyone choose to give free money to landlords that are already well to do? A basic income project to do what exactly?

I didn't find this test to be particularly accurate. This one on the other hand blew me away https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/upshot/dialect-quiz...

To expand on the VPN benefits you already have in place... grab a vnc app for Android and VPN in then vnc to a machine from your phone. All of the sudden you are sitting at an Linux desktop on your phone. With DLNA casting you can literally now use your phone as a full blown computer casting to a monitor (assuming you have some sort of peripherals). That was always my holy grail.
Re:I was scammed by a celebrity influencer on Saturday December 15, 2018 @12:55AM (#18687276)
Is this sarcasm?
If an aversion stopped them then this is just painful.
How is the Roku on this list? I have a pihole setup to do network level adblocking and telemetry disabling and the Roku is the absolute worst device. Thousands and "phone homes" per day that are not needed for the device to function properly. I can only assume it is feeding data back to the mothership at a very high rate.
Interesting. I really enjoyed the white guy speaking Swahili and his ability to switch mid-sentence. As a monoglot I am envy those with this ability. Reminds me of my favorite movie scene of all time, in Inglorious Basterds they are speaking German in a bar and an accent gives away an undercover spy. Right before things go south the aggressor and protagonist switch to a very refined English.

> Lt. Archie Hicox: [In English] Well, if this is it, old boy, I hope you don't mind if I go out speaking the King's.

> Major Dieter Hellstrom: [In English] By all means, Captain.

Riveting scene, wish I could find more like it.

The application is specific in this instance but can obviously be generalized. Thanks for the info, I'll keep this in mind.

This was featured on HN a few days ago, it uses artifacts from the manufacturing process to extract data about which device took a photo. Is there any sort of algorithm on algorithmia at the moment that can give you this kind of information? Thank you, loved the post.
I'll be looking forward to the 2018 Network and Distributed Systems Security Conference? Would this method work after compression is applied to the pics??

Re:Ask HN: Fully online CS degrees? on Monday December 11, 2017 @03:54PM (#15900344)
Doesn't this program require an undergrad in CS? Why would it be more apropos for another field?
The stock market has been proven to be rigged!

The only winning move is not to play.

Put your money in an FDIC insured monkey-market or savings account with no attached fees and a decent interest rate.

I'd recommend the book "Coders at Work," it features lots of industry veterans and candid interviews with them. I remember not being able to put the book down while reading the chapter interviewing the founder of LiveJournal.
Allow me to save you sometime, the author basically sums it up with this:

Conclusion: It’s obviously a simplified model and you can play around with the numbers and get marginally different results, but the key insight is that even if you’re a fervent crypto believer, if you think there is a nonzero chance a crash might happen then in order to maximize your EV (i.e. make the most money) you should keep some % of your money on the sidelines to invest once the bubble pops and lower your average buy-in cost. The higher the probability you assign to a crash, the more money you should keep on the sidelines and vice versa
Is there a similar Java centric type override? Would it be as simple as dropping a jar in the right location or is there an environment variable that can be over written? Also it would be neat to know the java code to chain the "open" system call like he did.
Re:Silicon Valley Software Engineer Salaries by Experience Level on Wednesday November 29, 2017 @05:41PM (#15811591)
It honestly pains me to look at salaries of people in the Bay Area compared to mine. I see salaries 3X mine and wonder, 'where did I go wrong?'
Agreed, cryptocurrency= Bitcoin in the public's mind. Perhaps that will change in the future
sarcasm?
Litecoin is really the future. It is almost the exact same as Bitcoin (different hashing algorithm, more in supply, faster transactions) but the most important thing is it has crystal clear guidance on SegWit/POS/POW and how it is developed. It has probably one of the most influential people in all of crypto behind it (Charlie Lee) AND it is a fair coin, it was not premined. It has actually been used as a "testbed" for some of the SegWit Bitcoin testing if that gives you any indication of its stability.
Re:Advice from a 19 Year Old Girl and Software Developer on Monday November 27, 2017 @12:40PM (#15789205)
Software engineering wasn't recognized as a field of study when I was in school, as a matter of fact I don't think software engineering is an ABAT accredited field of study anywhere in the same vein as, say Computer Engineering, for instance.

A wise man once said computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.

Re:Advice from a 19 Year Old Girl and Software Developer on Monday November 27, 2017 @11:13AM (#15788400)
I see, I thought you didn't study CS because you knew enough of it where it wouldn't bring value but I was mistaken. Thanks for the clarification.
Re:Advice from a 19 Year Old Girl and Software Developer on Monday November 27, 2017 @11:10AM (#15788374)
Questions like this rooted in reality have no place here.
Re:Advice from a 19 Year Old Girl and Software Developer on Monday November 27, 2017 @10:44AM (#15788149)
So what did you end up doing and studying?
