Re:The Website Specification on Monday June 08, 2026 @10:44PM (#48455612)
I heard dropdowns and certain some other elements are notoriously difficult to style. People resorting to tricks and js to handle their visuals. And it seems to be enough hassle to deem HTML+CSS a non-solution for some folks.
Re:Making Peace with Your Unlived Dreams on Monday June 08, 2026 @08:47PM (#48454634)
In case of our strongest desires, it usually is just trying to impress others. We as a society need to come up with ways to cultivate strong desires with a better root.

Hierarchy is a very strong driver for our motivation. But also it’s kind of hard to fight for in real life depending on the societal situations. To the point where some cultures integrate the defeatism into cosmology like the caste system.

I wish there is a systematic way to find “better things to fight for”. But I bet most of them are spiritualistic or religious in nature.

Re:The Website Specification on Sunday May 31, 2026 @06:12AM (#48344458)
The cause is businesses are putting emphasis on showing their brand on the site. Every dropdown has to look and feel like their product.

In short almost everyone wants their website to be a video game.

I'm surprised they included proprietary format that's de facto standard in profession or supported by multiple tools (.xls, .xlsx) in preferred section [1]. I wonder if "well-known enough" is as good as "open" from preservation standpoint.

Re:CS Professor: To My Students on Monday April 27, 2026 @08:36PM (#47929086)
I really love the encouragement. Honestly it resonates a lot with me. It shows that the craft itself is still beautiful, you just need to find the right people to mingle with.

But the real world and money blended in creates a weird corrupt mix, just like everything. Not to mention there is a real risk for people who are already has their feet in the industry but not yet senior enough to survive or to control, for example, the AI replacements. And more than likely, the seniority required is way higher than one would think. In the end, economic drives are the dominant forces.

I like how the disclaimer went humble bragging about the range of usage.

Disliking evangelism is something most of us can relate. I give you that. And everything you said is very reasonable.

But have you tried it though? Don’t you think it’s time to give your story? Slam your needs to htmx and see what comes out of it’s ruins?

Re:Thin Desires Are Eating Your Life on Tuesday December 16, 2025 @10:35PM (#46297939)
In my perspective, this is a style of writing that emphasizes the poetic side of speech. The thin paragraphs you see is a result of a rhythmic decision to make it short burst.

More than anything it seems to make sense to read it out loud in a theatrical performance.

Re:Furilabs Linux Phone on Tuesday October 15, 2024 @08:47AM (#41847999)
I think those very total attention expected during phone calls, and the speed at which it happens, contributes to a higher level of anxiety compared to texting. The younger generation hate these elevated stresses and prefer more async communication
That's why they said "vice versa".
Whether it is possible to find pure-economic or pure-societal art is not relevant. And we can't dismiss the existence of these two dimensions, which you can also call "consumption mode" or "purpose".

In (my) definition, art is everything a human make or do that is capable of evoking emotional reaction from another human. So it follows that IMO, art's value is primarily societal in nature. The economic value comes afterwards.

The economic value of art mainly harnessed by people that want to evoke feelings in other people, those in entertainment industry like movie producers, game directors are an example of this. And this is where the push to make art-making labor cheaper mostly come from.

The societal value mainly comes in two forms. 1) Capturing the world around us for a record, and 2) as a medium for communication in emotional or subconscious level. This value is seperate from the economical one, and I think is the most important one.

fair enough. It might be better to use other word.
Re:Sora: Creating video from text on Friday February 16, 2024 @10:14AM (#39398108)
It was about unfairly compensated usage, not limited to reproduction.
Re:Is htmx Just Another JavaScript Framework? on Thursday January 11, 2024 @10:16AM (#38953290)
htmx is not a framework, or even library. it's only one implementation of an idea. an idea that needs to be implemented by the browser instead of something external like a js file.
Re:Making noisy SVGs on Friday December 08, 2023 @12:06AM (#38565660)
Thank you for the great explanation of dithering. It’s very intuitive and easy to follow.
Re:System Design 101 on Thursday October 26, 2023 @01:14AM (#38021854)
I was also intrigued by that section. It's surely interesting but looks more like an important special case than a technical subject. Not complaining tho.
Re:Port a Unity Game to Your Own Engine: Part 1 on Monday October 23, 2023 @11:27PM (#37994580)
Why is article empty? Is it video only content?
We are in dire need of succession. Can memories of his reasoning alone withstand the erosion of time in the mindshare of public discussion? I know FSF will codify stuffs and preserve things that are ideologically important. But without someone as strong-headed as him we will have a hard time defending freedom of software.
Re:Become Ungoogleable on Friday July 21, 2023 @01:54AM (#36810440)
I've never tried this. What query did you use? What kind of result you can expect to get? I'd like to try it myself.
There is a possibility that the tinkering itself is the hobby.

Of course there is problem if these tinkerers ask everyone to value tinkering to the level that they do. But it's a perspective.

Re:Why do Ivy League students self-sabotage? on Sunday July 02, 2023 @02:49AM (#36558955)
Assuming that they do, does it significantly change the patterns and tendencies of actions among that age group? I think the distribution of behavior should be intact even if you just sample among Harvard students.
Re:The rule says, “No vehicles in the park” on Friday June 23, 2023 @10:07PM (#36454761)
It’s because twitter HAS porn.
In short, for most people HOW you say it is far more important than WHAT you’re saying.
Re:The Brand New Thunderbird Logo on Thursday May 25, 2023 @12:39AM (#36067106)
Two benefits comes to my head instantly:

- I can search all of my emails at once.

- I don't need to worry that much about account management.

Re:Things, Names, and Numbers on Monday February 20, 2023 @09:28AM (#34868375)
It’s truly delightful to read. I’ve never read an explanation of real numbers construction as easy to follow as this one.
Re:Honest guide to Vanlife in Japan after a year on Tuesday February 07, 2023 @05:28PM (#34700735)
I wonder how do they handle address and municipal paperworks. Do you legally “stay” at a friend’s house/apartment?
Re:Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas on Wednesday December 21, 2022 @05:22AM (#34078839)
This has convinced me to try obsidian at work. I already use plaintext markdown as daily journaling. So the migration was as painful as appointing my journal folder as a vault, Let’s see if I can make good use of the canvas.
Re:Show HN: I made an Ethernet transceiver from logic gates on Sunday December 18, 2022 @05:51AM (#34036517)
This is sick. I also read their post about the making a discrete computer and didn’t expect them to be also writing a compiler from scratch. Something I’ve only been dreaming about.
Re:Korg makes music with Raspberry Pi on Friday December 09, 2022 @06:56PM (#33928133)
I wonder if the Raspi uses OS in this use case. I imagine using the hardware directly like a microcontroller is also a possibility. I also wonder if they use some kind of linux distribution with their own software on top of it.
