> who makes the app the quickest with the most flash will win over those who put more care into things.

I think it is already done many years before LLM and agents programming. There are places where doing quicker is preferable than doing right and it does not matter if you do it 100% right after first iteration. Also, many people do not care about many things. I guess it is not easy to say all the time that something is better than other because it could depend on the context. I would like to have proper, well secured, architected, tested, documented etc. software but someone else could say it does not need to be perfect (lets say it can have bugs or not well architected) because it needs to be done as fast as possible or be very minimal MVP (yeah even simpler MVP). So, IMO it is hard to say.

Re:The math that OpenAI keeps for itself on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:34AM (#50141466)
Do you think companies do not hide secrets? I think you are wrong but maybe I do not understand your point of view. However let's see my example.

Imagine: you are a boss of a company and own a powerful tool which can give you a lot of advantages. In short: it allows you to earn more money than competing companies. Would you share this tool to everybody, so that means competing companies could destroy your business or you keep the tool in secret and slowly build empire?

I do not know if OpenAI has powerful LLMs/AI things but I can be sure they do not share everything what they have. I think the only way they could share hidden "powerful tool" is situation where men in black visit CEO and talk with him/her about co-op. Of course CEO is "happy" because he/she can not refuse if you know what I mean. But still hidden powerful tool is hidden but this time another "more important guys" have access to it.

Re:Parser Combinators on Sunday October 18, 2026 @09:09AM (#50140788)
Yes, it would be good. However I guess even simple show/hide chapters/sections also would do good work. It could be something similar to foldable directories or code fragments in code editors (for example VS Code has this feature).
Yes, I was using CUDA toolkit on my Debian. Anyway, thanks for reply. I think I could try something but definitely it looks like it will not have better quality, even for writing simple code function by function :P
It sounds great and I hope local LLM/AI will be more powerful and available even on old hardware.

I tried llama.cpp with offloading "all what could be" to my GPU (GTX 750 Ti 2 GB). I could run local Qwen2.5-Coder quite fast (I do not remember but something like 25-30 t/s). However this model generates bad code (I tried Python and JavaScript). So, for my setup it is better to chat with free ChatGPT and do copying-pasting between web chat and code editor.

Is it even worth for trying something on my GPU? What do you think?

And yes, I use Claude Code (Opus 5.5) and Codex in my job but for personal stuff I would prefer trying free solutions (it is the reason I tried local LLM). I do not want to buy subs, at leats for now.

Re:Non-Determinism Doesn't Matter on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:01AM (#50118504)
But you can still solve problems and write code by hand on your own for your hobby projects. You do not need to solve problems only in paid job. However I think with LLMs/AI you can go further and do more difficult problems. Of course somebody can create whole app faster and from scratch etc. but it does not mean that person will understand everything. But what does this person really need to know? Implementation details such as every piece of code (ihmo not possible), selected framework details, business logic code, high overview of architecture? But why do we treat programming language backend and "under the hood code" as not necessary artifacts? "Because it is complex and possible for single human". Yes and with LLMs generated code we go further. Whole apps will be artifacts, pieces of bigger and more complex systems. I guess it will be like this but I am not sure, we will see.
Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:04AM (#50101988)
People will die because nature works this way. Of course if humans find out ways to live longer (there are experiments, biological treatments) then this world will change a lot. But well... Everyone did not exist before born - if death is similar, it probably does not matter for us humans. If there are not God, Gods and something else then our lives could be pointless. You can die tomorrow and you will not find out it. You will not know that your family members or friends (if you have) will be sad. It is hard topic but you know.
Re:Now That Information Is Free, What's a College Campus For? on Thursday October 15, 2026 @03:28AM (#50100441)
I think for some people universities are just the way for forcing them to study - without it many people would not study on your own. There are different reasons why they would not do it: laziness, no study plans, no ability to study "alone" and so on. Imagine a world where there is not any forced education even for children. Do you think that people would care less or more about learning? Of course there would people who could improve themselves, focus more on their goals and so on. But also there would be a lot people who just do not want to learn anything. Just give them shelter, food, let them have fun, sex, partying and some work from time to time so they could get money. World would be so different place but... who knows maybe it could work after really long period of time full of experiments, trials and errors.
Re:Recreational Programming on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:55AM (#50086256)
Yeah. During job use AI if you have to (or just change job if you can). In your free time do programming by hand if you really need. I can understand it but some people can not handle it. I read on Hacker News, Reddit and some other places that people are sad and angry about LLMs/AI. They usually say some shit such as no more problem solving or AI do all work for them.
Re:Ask HN: What is the current trajectory of a senior engineer? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:46AM (#50086156)
I think it is the same category such as mathematicians, doctors, biologists, scientists, sales representatives, marketers, teachers, artists, influencers (yeah, these human influencers) and so on. Of course you can get rid off programmers or mathematicians but then you need to understand and handle stuff on your own. You still need somebody who can check "what's going on". Imagine you are boss. Do you really want to do all things on your own with agents? Sure, let's do it. I think some people can do it but there is a lot of people who prefer somebody else does it for them. You are boss, you know.
Re:Recreational Programming on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:11AM (#50084093)
THIS IS IT.

I know and understand it. However I see a lot of people being sad and angry because of LLMs/AI agents. I would like to add to this website section about LLMs/AI. You can use them or not at all if you want. I guess nobody forces you to use "magic" AI in your hobby projects.

Re:Intel D270 GPU AI Accelerator–Up to 480 GB LPDDR5X on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:45AM (#50072570)
I use Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex Sol 6.1 in my job and I love it. I wish be able to run local models which have power at least current Opus 5.5 on medium hardware which does not cost millions $. This is my dream, running LLMs and AI agents to just create things for myself. On my really old hardware I can only run simple and small 1.5B model (Qwen2.5-Coder-1.5B) and well... Ihmo it works fine with offloading to GPU and using llama.cpp but it does a lot of mistakes so I deciced to stop using it.
Is it the same Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 decompilation project? If yes, then why author says he/she does no release source code? If I remember correctly, it has to be open sourced Modern Warfare 2 modernized engine and so on? Or do I miss something?
Re:REA Reverse – Engineer Anything on Saturday October 10, 2026 @08:34AM (#50032308)
I wish in few years local LLMs/AI be more available and powerful so I could decompile and extend childhood games. Tools, missions... Damn. My dreams.
Re:REA Reverse – Engineer Anything on Saturday October 10, 2026 @08:32AM (#50032295)
But you still can do it without LLMs/AI. And even better you can be proud that you did something "by hand" without AI help. Do you know that you can still cooking, singing, programming and so on? You do not need to buy ready meals, generate music by prompts or let model to figure out solution.
Re:REA Reverse – Engineer Anything on Saturday October 10, 2026 @08:26AM (#50032244)
Why do you think it will destroy hobby? I think it will increase. When I was a child I wanted to have map editor or tools for modyfing closed sourced favorite games but for me it was not possible. Low level programming and reverse engineering is not for me (but maybe I will get into it soon) so I am happy about tools built for agents. Maybe one day I will decompile and extend favorite games without spending several years with or without success. LOL, I am not sure if I want to do it by hand.

And ihmo programming, math, doing music or anything else still can be hobby - with our without AI. Do not be worry, you do not have to use AI for your hobby stuff. You can still code, create from scratch crappy personal frameworks/libs and so on.

I only want for times when local LLMs/AI are powerful and available on average hardware, so I could use it for my personal stuff without monthly payments. I wish doing so many things on my own.

Re:What should we tell our students? on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:54AM (#50017865)
I understand but I guess the future (far future or who knows) could be like that human just download SKILL and that's it - no more learning, study ing basic things. While basic things could be advanced math, computer science, biology and just everything (or nearly everything) what human do. I know it is science fiction right now but who knows. Smartphone + the Internet were step 0. AI/LLMs are next iteration. Still knowledge is valueable and so on but I guess eventually we get to the point which I said. Then galaxy exploration - if we still be here alive :)
Re:What should we tell our students? on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:34AM (#50017699)
I think we should apply AI into human, so we could be better and then start doing more advanced stuff required for the Universe explorations. Current AI/LLMs can be considered as first step to that. Take and look about our history. We could never achieve so many if we stopped doing great things because of <any reason>.

Why do we ever use PCs, smartphones, Internet, electricity, medicine and so on? Why do we live? For what?

Re:Friendship ended with Deno, now Node is my best friend on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @08:48AM (#49992029)
There are many solutions, alternatives and people want to create their own better/next gen replacers of old things. Yeah, sometimes it is right to craft something new. But you know, somebody has to maintain these existing solutions - new and old ones. Also thinking like "I want the best from this set of things" does not help. I sometimes have thoughts like it but I should remember that switching between technologies are not solution too.
Re:State of Devs 2026 survey results: developers are exhausted on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @03:17AM (#49989418)
I do not get it. I know that there are different people but... Do you really have that many issues, problems with using AI for coding and solving problems in your jobs or hobbies? In my company using Codex and Claude help us a lot with our software. We were able to fix legacy software which we could not do earlier without AI because of current tasks going on. We migrated in 2 weeks* (read below) to new versions of framework and libraries. If we have to do it without AI, then it will be work for few months or even year - only if doing that work, not other work such as fixing bugs, maintaing systems and doing current work such as new features. In our case AI tools help us a lot - every single developer.

Notice: first working prototype was done after approximately 2 weeks and was done by one developer. Of course it had bugs and was not perfect but it was huge improvement compared to what was before. Imagine that you do not regularly update framework/libraries (as it should be) because of various reasons (client does not want to pay for it or you focus on different things). We understand our decisions and so on, we know it but real life sometimes can not be perfect. Thanks to Codex/Claude we can move forward. Of course we know the LLMs/AI tools are not perfect and magic problem solvers but we could not say that these tools make our lifes worse or something.

Re:The death of web development education on Friday October 02, 2026 @10:59AM (#49934249)
Ok, but we (people) should understand that we will not be the same forever. What would you do if it was possible to load SKILLs directly into your brain and body? So you do not need to learn, study and so on but still you have to solve problems (maybe more complex). I think it seems to be science fiction vision but to be honest I do not think future human be usable without technical modifications. Modyfing human DNA, integrating robotic/computer science features into body - it seems to be future for human expansion in the Universe. Humans always want to improve something and LLM/AI things are next step before more complex and better features.

Imagine: you have possibility to load desired SKILL into your brain/body - lets say it is fluency in foreign language so you can use it as native language. Will you choose it or "old way" which is hard, long and does not guarantee 100% mastering fluency? Or improving your body, making you faster, stronger with more endurance. Or SKILL allowing you breathe underwater. All of these and more are just human (of course not all humans) dreams. If you could choose, you really would choose old thing instead of new thing which makes life easier.

I guess we as humans should definitely think about making life easier and think at bigger scale - the Universe. We still do not know our oceans, lands and so on but imagine what could be done if humans were better - in all fields you can imagine. Integrating AI features is hard problem to solve but I hope we will find out solutions. Personally, I would like to obtain many skills easier way. We are still in times where we have to learn or at least read/verify content generated by computer models. But what if we had power of these models in our brains and bodies...

But still it is about GiB instead of KiB.
Because there are different people - many of them like using dark mode.
I have not written any CSS from scratch since years. Does normalize.css/reset.css are still viable and used? I use Tailwind because of components design, so I wonder what actually current trends are in context of small/alternative CSS solutions.
Re:Bez: Generating a browser engine from specs and tests on Friday October 02, 2026 @04:22AM (#49931140)
Could you say which AI/LLMs you mean?
Re:Bez: Generating a browser engine from specs and tests on Friday October 02, 2026 @04:21AM (#49931131)
But what are you writing about, LoL? Linux is just normal OS. Why did you mention Linux?
What are you talking about? Lol, Linux gaming is fine and still growing.
Re:Performance Improvements in .NET 11 on Thursday September 17, 2026 @09:38AM (#49740590)
I remember .NET fails when there were dramas about not open sourced debugger, planning to remove hot reload (make it only available in Visual Studio because of licensing) or poor support in Visual Studio Code compared to other languages. AFAIK many people were angry that VS Code is not first class editor for C#/.NET. I am not sure how it is these days.
Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:14AM (#49728323)
Yes, there is a funny PR in open source project about refactoring source code to assembler code or even machine code 0s and 1s. I do not remember exactly but I remember I LOLed hard when I saw it.
Re:Txt: A fast, keyboard-driven terminal text editor for engineers on Saturday September 12, 2026 @09:11AM (#49672000)
I think yes because there are people who prefer picking up something rather than building their tool. Recreating just everything from scratch or make custom solutions are not the one way to go. I do not want to create editor/IDE because it is not in my interests. I choose VS Code, Kate, Notepad++, Nano instead. If I have paid LLMs I will use them different way than reinventing editor lol.

Also keep in mind that it is software which requires a little bit maintenance from time to time. And access to LLM (mostly paid) and (or - depends on if we want to understand something) domain knowledge (in this case how to build editor, how to do parsing etc.).

However if somebody wants to do custom things then let him/her do it. And yeah first editor, then programming language, then... OS and so on.
