Re:What Are Signals? on Saturday March 04, 2023 @03:00PM (#35023949)
Signals are a common term for this. Someone else invented the term not the people who wrote this.
Re:The contagious visual blandness of Netflix on Sunday January 22, 2023 @01:13PM (#34480354)
Another movie that does this is Tenet. There is this massive action set piece at the end, people are literally fighting for the fate of the world. Then you have people running around, shooting at nothing.

Are massive set pieces with hundreds of extras just not economically feasible anymore?

Re:No, React Native is not the future on Saturday December 31, 2022 @07:37PM (#34202304)
You are looking at this with hindsight bias and are assuming that for some reason the future will remain the same as the past. There are no fundamental reasons why ios and android development occur with two different ui frameworks in two different languages.

With low interest rates companies will not be able to justify paying 3x to maintain 3 different apps when they could theoretically just pay 1x for one app that works everywhere

Re:No, React Native is not the future on Saturday December 31, 2022 @07:35PM (#34202290)
Ios and android development as they exist today will die once governments mandate then end of the app store monopolies.
Re:Should Small Rust Structs be Passed by-copy or by-borrow? on Saturday December 31, 2022 @01:53PM (#34199464)
Ugh, you are right but then someone comes and uses this to rationalize not including things like map, filter and reduce in a language because they are supposedly too complicated and you can just do it with a for loop

Doesnt deno bring a bunch of security improvements to the table?
Calculate how much more you need to earn in CA to make $75k.

Im assuming higher federal taxes than you are.

Half of Sf is transplants, they arent living close to family

> The average worker in SF is getting paid 10%+ more than the average worker in FL or TX

10pct more is not enough to cover the difference. Also if you are good you can make sf salary anywhere in places where the cost of food is a third of the price

Re:Carefully exploring Rust as a Python developer on Sunday November 13, 2022 @11:08AM (#33584305)
I dont think gatekeeping rust is necessary. The nice thing about rust is that people that are not experts can now attempt to create high performance low level software and the worst case scenario is that its slow due to unnecessary copying.
Re:Michael Burry’s warning for the index fund bubble on Sunday November 06, 2022 @11:13AM (#33494097)
Markets are supposedly efficient because people pick to buy companies that are good value for the profits they generate and sell companies if they become less valuable.

If people are buying index funds automatically in retirement accounts they are not making this judgement and thus all stocks in index funds are selling at a premium because of this automatic buying pressure. If enough people do this there is potential for the stocks in index funds to be overvalued.

People expect apps to work across all their devices
There are probably a million different causes for depression and im convinced for all but the most extreme cases that usage of anti depressants is a mistake.

I think viewing depression as a disease instead of a symptom is a mistake. So many people eat food completely devoid of nutrition, stay indoors all day, have erratic sleep schedules, drink absurd amounts of alcohol and smoke weed all day. Why are we giving these people antidepressants when what they need is to go outside and walk and to take a multivitamin?

Re:Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources on Monday April 25, 2022 @10:00AM (#31154847)
Its not contradictory when you realize his rhetoric is about individual rights and not bot rights…
Re:Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources on Monday April 25, 2022 @09:58AM (#31154822)
Twitter literally has hookers and other sex workers on the platform. If advertisers really cared about brand safety they would have already left.
Sleep is one of the most important bodily functions, disrupting it because of silly reasons such as not waking up in light is ridiculous
Re:What Does It Mean for AI to Understand? on Thursday December 16, 2021 @11:17AM (#29579775)
What does it mean for humans to understand? There are many times in the past where i thought i understood something and then i grow older and i see the holes.
Re:Microsoft’s Halo Infinite Went from Disaster to Triumph on Thursday December 09, 2021 @09:00PM (#29505611)
Your criticisms about the gameplay are very unique given criticisms of this game in general are almost always qualified by saying the core gameplay loop is good. Why dont you give a comparison of a gameplay you think plays better.
Re:Microsoft’s Halo Infinite Went from Disaster to Triumph on Thursday December 09, 2021 @08:57PM (#29505589)
The negativity with this game is ridiculous. I have experienced 0 glitches in the multiplayer and the campaign is excellent. The issues everyone is having is with the multiplayer monetization which i dont care about since i dont spend money on cosmetics.

If you are spreading fud about glitches and the game being “broken” then find me one reputable news source reporting on these issues.

Re:Ask HN: Is the Great Resignation in tech real? If so, why? on Saturday October 23, 2021 @10:18PM (#28974339)
I feel like im reading my own thoughts. The thing that got me into work was the people not the product. I also worked in ads.
The way i read this comment is that you are unhappy that people put in extra effort into their passion and dreams and instead people should just strive to be mediocre.
Re:Will the US experience a violent upheaval in 2020? (2012) on Sunday January 10, 2021 @01:37PM (#25717871)
I guess your education did not teach you that correlation does not imply causation. The simpler explanation for why people that are educated lean left is that the people teaching them lean left. Why do teachers lean left? Because they are often broke and underpaid. The fact that there is such uniformity of thought in higher education just goes to show the power of indoctrination.

I feel bad harping on common talking points but most degrees do not teach analytical thought.

Mind elaborating?

Re:Don’t ruin streaming by turning it into cable on Saturday August 12, 2017 @10:26PM (#15001161)
Thank you for proving my point
Re:Don’t ruin streaming by turning it into cable on Saturday August 12, 2017 @08:14PM (#15000795)
I remember how people on the internet used to complain about how they didn’t want all of the garbage channels that were bundled with cable. Now they are complaining about being able to pick and choose what they pay for. (Yes you don’t need to have access to every subscription service)

Two things to note, pirates will always find some way to rationalize their theft and the consumer is a child that wants to have their cake and eat it too.
