I don't even know if CVT is correct. Let's say it's the transmission thingy in 2003+ Toyota Highlander. The whole cars were indestructible, but the tranny impressed the most, especially up and down mountain roads.

Because like all churches, they make money from it.

Anecdote: I went to a charismatic non-denominational new wave evangelical thing in Maui, for reasons I will not explain, call it amusement. I paid particular attention to the pastor before and after the collection plate, and it amused me so much that I went back to confirm what I had first seen: that every ounce of his charisma (and boy was he loaded in that dept.) drained from his Animus as soon as the collection plate was full. He would disappear into the background to suffer the remaining service until which time he could count his winnings.

The tables will turn on this one. It's not just frivolous, it's damagingly so. World famous album and band beloved by all tarnished by greed and frivolity. Dude will be countersued into the ground.

P.S. I once posted a naked baby pic of me on a dating site and it almost got me in a lot of trouble.

I've found that being a bastard in salary negotiations (pushing, not backing down, willing to walk) is the very best way to get promoted, and it should almost always be with a new company. Your existing company knows what you're being paid, and that's hobbling. You need asymmetric leverage. No one needs to know your salary. They should see how you value yourself in the salary negotiation. Take risks. Pays off. You do have to perform, so don't push so hard that you can't do the work. I suppose that goes without saying, but some people forget. I forgot once. Ended up surrounded by PhD statisticians that ate my lunch. Fired 3 months later. Was still paid ridiculously, but was also ego-bruising.

You can practice this with headhunters. Push the numbers. Try double your current number. You'd be surprised some of the numbers you can pull out of them in certain "must have now" situations.

If this 665 Tw figure is a yearly estimate, they project 1.8 Tw/day for 2030. That figure includes EV.

Yamaha are in late stage development of an EV electric engine said to be competitive with Tesla.

I agree. We used the Toyota Highlander hybrid in the winter mountains of Colorado for our taxi service. They could go everywhere a GMC 4x4 could (almost), great on fuel, and were virtually indestructible. Toyota's continuously variable transmission (CVT) is rock solid too, wasn't always, but is now.
Can't stop progress.
I would starve the very construct of sequestration to start with. It's appeasement. It's “The garbage will keep coming, so let's build more landfills” pragmatism. That won't work with greenyhaasgas. We don't need sequestration, we need stoppage.

Capitalismus. What is this stop you speak of so amorously?

But if you have 1T to throw around, simple: Buy every top polluter and then shut them down. Buy their customers too, because they'll be the first to bitch loudest. Government obstruction could be non-trivial. Buy them too. Fuck it. Increase to $10 T and just buy everyone and shut it all down. If that doesn't work, nuke 'em. See why promotions defy me? (j/k)

Umberto Eco once wrote that the purpose of your life is what you leave behind.

I find value in this in both creating and doing nothing.

LinkedInitis. It's spreading.

Fair enough. The $1M ones are for trafficking. But $15K for weed? That's contempt. That's a Jesse Pinkman meth RV low-ball.
Re:Ask HN: How to Motivate an Unmotivated Developer? on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @06:26PM (#28227932)
He could be depressed. There are things people simply can't or won't discuss at work; mental illness is one.

He could have a drug or alcohol problem. Could drug test him and get him some help if he needs it. That's a bit iffy on the technics, but I think you understand. I, for example, have been intermittently stoned for half my life. When I am: zero fucks given.

Else? Take all the weight off. No responsibilites. Then redirect him. Away from dev if necessary. The absence of work could actually motivate him, contrary as that might sound.

Non-emergency dispatcher. It can be fun, a puzzle that changes frequently.

Negative on both emergency dispatch and air traffic control. You need ASHD for those, where S = Surplus.

A lot of jobs in transportation and logistics.

You're the one asking what he meant. Odd that you seem to be so sure when you yourself aren't sure at all.

That was mostly Chomsky on quick summary, but you wouldn't be the first to malign him. Being right, he wouldn't care.

He means the slow, grinding processes that virtually eliminated all natives in the Americas, stealing their lands and lives with phony treaties, disease, and war, leading to a most ridiculous zeitgeist know as Manifest Destiny, wherein we whitewashed colonial genocide of the highest order over generations in the name of freedom, established a country built on slave labor, and then allowed industry and military to establish a virtual high priest sect know as modern finance. With the high priests now failing us every few years, seemingly worse each time, and pestilence all around us, the drama continues to unfold. I think he means something like that, synthesis culture being euphemistic. I suppose that has a nicer ring to it than assimilation.

I bought this fiddle from some dude on eBay call Nero. Shall we play?

Logging roads in the national forest are usually fair game, unless otherwise restricted.

Those intimidating signs that say “Logging Permit Required” are meant for loggers, so try not to get caught with an industrial chainsaw in your van.

Loggers wake up too damn early. Prepare for (what sounds like) a military invasion at 4 AM when the equipment shows up to turn beautiful, innocent trees into money.

I use an outdoor propane stove with massive BTUs from Camp Chef for my wok. You need big heat for a wok. Makes all the difference, you just have to get used to cooking really fast under really high heat.

https://www.campchef.com/cooking-systems/14-cooking-systems/...

This stove is only about half as powerful as one in a Chinese restaurant. Those things are rocket engines.

And it looks like a butter knife.
Ask a question. Then another. Then maybe another. Then you're part of the conversation. Then you can make statements if you want.

You should have something to say. That always helps.

Once you have ground, you don't have to talk fast. Talk normally and your listeners will adapt to your speed. You can control the speed of conversation just by slowing it down yourself.

People who like to talk and can do so quickly? I can't say I've met many who like to listen, so maybe listening as a strategy would be the better bet for this group.

It's ruined me to such an extent in that regard that I can't do 9 to 5 at all. I'd just be staring at everybody in disbelief - You work how many hours a week? I don't work that many hours a month! - and would probably be burned as a heretic.
Remember when Google Maps had real zoom? You could count someone's eyelashes from space. The fidelity was so good that it was subsequently reduced. I think it was military/gov objection. To those who were accustomed to the power of old zoom, new zoom was super suck and still is.

I think what were seeing with search is a corollary: the results are blurry, not clear like they once were, like an intentional backing away from clarity. Why dirty the results? Except for teaching copyright holders a lesson*, I don't understand.

Re:Ask HN: Non-sci-fi fiction recommendations? on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @06:36PM (#28135615)
I read A Confederacy of Dunces every few years. It's a fun book.

I also love Earthly Powers by Anthony Burgess. Epic saga beautifully written.

I keep it really simple. I look for a national forest on Google Maps and drive there, adapting as needed. I'm generally looking for one sign: Welcome to X National Forest, and then I'm woo hoo! Home sweet home.

I don't drive deep into the forest (couple miles max), as cell service drops precipitously the further you are from main roads.

I do follow the signage. I want to sleep without worry, and rangers will not hesitate to wake you up at 3 am to move your car.

When in doubt, visit the website for whatever national forest you're in. Most of the information you need will be right at your fingertips, including important warnings like weather/fire risk.

Most national forests have what's called dispersed camping. Those are areas specifically reserved for camping and are almost completely unimproved, but I often find they're too deep in the forest for my liking. Just because there's a dispersed camping area doesn't mean you can camp only there.

Is national forest? Yes.

Is campsite? Yes, but doesn't even need to be a campsite. Park anywhere that's safe and doesn't obstruct, unless restricted.

Is empty? Yes.

Is unrestricted? Yes.

If restricted, abide? Yes.

Is safe? Yes, mostly. Remember bears and bear etiquette. Remember the zero-worry rule: If you're worried about where you're parked, leave. Don't assuage your worry as paranoia, listen to it and find another spot. Even if you unpack your whole van and setup camp. If you're worried, pack up and go find another spot. Peace of mind, especially if you're alone, is worth the aggravation.

Internet? Two bars. Woo hoo!

Trees/shade? Yes.

Score!

Is mine for now, so don't burn it down.

When I exit, not so much as a toenail do I leave behind.

If campgrounds are what you want, the online reservation system for USGOV campgrounds countrywide is here: recreation.gov. Off season you can snag a campground reservation same day sometimes; not so on-season.
