Re:Did you lose your AirPods? on Friday August 23, 2024 @08:21PM (#41334383)
That's weird, I use Find My for my AirPods case a lot and it does the "X feet away" thing as I get closer
Re:Markov chains are funnier than LLMs on Monday August 19, 2024 @06:05AM (#41289561)
I'm sorry but these all sound like a Redditor's terrible attempt at humor, predictable formulae with 'le quirkiness'
Re:The open weight Flux text to image model is next level on Thursday August 01, 2024 @05:28PM (#41133831)
i would give them a break, so many things exist in the tech sector that being completely original is basically impossible, unless you name your thing something nonsensical

also search engines are context aware, if your search history is full of julia questions, it will know what you're searching for

Re:Meta introduces Segment Anything Model 2 on Wednesday July 31, 2024 @06:58AM (#41118024)
the algorithm that fudges the order of the front page can be so annoying sometimes, i accidentally refresh the page, and a link that was top 10 on the front page a few minutes ago is now buried in page 3 suddenly
For me it's not about any of that, it's more about a restricted supply of IPv4 that only big corporations own and having to pay ever increasing rent for them

Anti-ipv6 is like the NIMBYism of IP address space, why can't we just "build" more to inflate the supply and crater the prices of existing ones?

> Use fewer borders.

The one with borders looks better to me than the one without, it's subjective.

Also the whole post is literally an advertisement to sell some book.

I watched the video, those graphics on the screen seem so glitchy, jumping all over the place every second, like from some bad physics simulation in a video game. Can't believe it's something that is in production and being sold with a "luxury" car.
Re:ChatGPT made me cry and other adventures in AI land on Thursday March 30, 2023 @12:58AM (#35368210)
The most annoying things about generative pre-trained transformers is that everyone has some opinion on it, which they think is special or profound in some way.

I am sick of having to filter out internet e-celebrity number 48320's opinion on it from my front page on every single website.

Re:GitHub Actions Incident 29.3 on Wednesday March 29, 2023 @12:04PM (#35359190)
Funnily enough, GitLab is also melting down at the moment, with pipelines not running and pull requests not functioning:

https://status.gitlab.com/

It's funny to see how half of HN frontpage in the past weeks has been Show HN thin wrappers around an API call to ChatGPT disguised as full startups.

All while HN posters were warning us about a flood of low quality AI generated content, well, here it is in one of its forms.

It's just that there's so much more exciting stuff to learn, like machine learning, game programming, latest shiny web framework of the month.

If you're a person who likes being visually stimulated while learning, spending free time outside of work to learn how to query tables and design schemas is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Re:Stanford Alpaca: An Instruction-following LLaMA model on Monday March 13, 2023 @02:56PM (#35140650)
What if you accidentally generate a racial slur offline on your PC? Who will protect you then?
Why are you all so mean to each other?

I can see where the confusion comes from. 2% of YC companies could use SVB and 30% of that 2% can't make payroll. Or 90% of YC companies could use SVB and 30% of those can't make payroll. That's a big difference.

Re:Deno: You don't need a build step on Thursday March 02, 2023 @11:54AM (#34998245)
I feel like this is what everyone actually wants. Typescript in the browser (at least for me personally) would be awesome, and if they made TS into a separate language with its own runtime, that would be like the holy grail.
Have 40% transgender people attempted suicide primarily because they are being bullied by society or because they have a mental disorder where their body doesn't match their brain and they become depressed because it is physically impossible to reconcile those differences, so they spiral into despair?

Genuine question, I just don't know how to tiptoe around this in a 2023 acceptable way without asking it bluntly.

Sounds like we need better medical treatment if half of people with the condition want to commit suicide, and telling people on the internet to stop bullying and putting colorful flags in your twitter profile won't suffice. Not advocating for hate, just saying that it seems the medical community delegated this whole thing to society with a note of 'please be nice and everything will sort itself out'.

Re:Ask HN: Gmail having spam problems for anybody else? on Friday February 03, 2023 @08:25PM (#34650319)
I've had the exact same experience in the past few days, and often the attachments contain malware
I have palmar hyperhidrosis as well. What helps is either clinical strength antiperspirant (something like DriClor) or iontophoresis.

Re:$7M lost on Amazon inventory, then bankrupt on Saturday December 03, 2022 @09:24AM (#33843685)
+1 for just using Argos or a similar store instead. It takes too long on Amazon to weed out the AliExpress tier stuff and ordering certain things like high value electronics from there is just way too risky.

The mere curation of products has become a highly valuable service, saving you money and time.

Re:Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market on Friday December 02, 2022 @09:49AM (#33831138)
Well for good bokeh you need a large sensor or a very wide aperture, which is hard to achieve in the form factor of smartphones.
Maybe they should sort out their pricing model. I'm not going to pay 20 different $10/month subscriptions to different papers so I can read HN and participate in the discussion.

Maybe I would pay something like a Spotify equivalent of 10-15 dollars a month to get access to all of these news websites, maybe even a limited amount of articles as I don't browse them without being sent to them from another website, but nothing like that exists. So, they get zero dollars from me instead of some finite amount.

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its Voice-Assistant Alexa on Sunday November 20, 2022 @09:42AM (#33681235)
The other morning, Alexa had a yellow notification. I asked her to read it, but I was still groggy in bed, so barely listening to what she was saying.

I only registered the phrase 'do you want me to add this to your basket?' at the end. No idea what it was, but she was trying to randomly sell me stuff while I'm chilling at home.

Re:Wickr shutting down December 31, 2023 on Saturday November 19, 2022 @01:16PM (#33672952)
Haven't heard about that but I know people use it to buy drugs quite often, as in the dealer will message you through Wickr, then you transfer crypto payments and they either mail it or drop it off. A breeding ground for scams related to this as well.

Surprisingly, it's not a leasehold. From the Zoopla ad:

Re:The number input is the worst input on Thursday September 15, 2022 @07:17PM (#32859738)
Yeah this does sound very user unfriendly, although I have to say a good validation UX is particularly difficult to code (When to validate, on submission or on losing focus to that element or instantly on input? Do you need to debounce the validation? How to present validation error messages and where? Etc.).

Your example probably stemmed from the case that the developer wanted the user to have instant feedback on validation, and instead of displaying some validation error message next to the input, they decided f-it - let's just immediately validate on input and not allow any invalid input. Bad/lazy decision, but I can see how it came to be.

Re:Ask HN: Discord banned me with no recourse on Thursday September 15, 2022 @09:14AM (#32851414)
They pretty much are de facto public services. The town square is now digital, and the laws have failed to adapt. Just because some big corporation owns it doesn't make it different in practice. Do you really want to defend a future where you can be banned from doing anything because some random $BIGCORP's algorithm decides so on a whim?
