I’m never bothered because it looked like too much effort for little money.
That is of course until you add all the additional charges.
And there's one thing you can NEVER trust and that is objectivity from gamers when looking at failure and reliability statistics. It's one huge cargo cult.
Notably my kids both have Ryzen 5600G + MSI B550 boards with no problems.
Literally every time I see stuff like this go down, the security software had exactly zero engineering research put into it whereas everything else did.
If people did this, CrowdStrike would either not exist or look completely different.
But at that point I was using the Lenovo box. So I just sold all the crap on eBay for the next victim.
Lots of speculation that is all.
Someone (at intel) needs to get an incident management process around this and start doing some proper comms.
Swapped board out assuming it was that. Same problem. Turned out to be the CPU which was a pain in the ass getting a warranty replacement for.
Ended up buying a new open box Intel 12400 Lenovo lump off eBay and using that.
Observations so far are limited to:
I have seen actual evidence that some W680 boards have been shipping with an unlimited power profile which will toast a CPU fairly quickly. As to who’s fault that is and if this correlates or is casual to the rest of the reports I don’t know.
My own Asus B760M board shipped with an unlimited power profile. I had to switch it to “Intel Default”. This machine has been under heavy load with no issues so far.
When I have done research I have only found people reporting this on custom build systems or low balling “servers”. I haven’t found any viable big brand system failure reports yet (Dell/HP/Lenovo etc). While some of this might be statistical failures I’d like to see configuration eliminated from the data as a cause first.
I think it would be rather nice at this point if Intel produced their own desktop boards again with their own tested BIOS. So we have something viable to compare against a reference system rather than the usual ugly junk shifter outfits or big brands. A fully vertically integrated component PC would be a nice thing to have again. They just worked!
We got this update pushed right through.
Looking at how this whole thing is pasted together, there's probably a regex engine in one of those sys files somewhere that was doing the "parsing"...
This is the same with the Play Store and windows store. And physical stores.
Never go into a shop unless you know what you need otherwise you’ll come out with something you don’t need.
“Any security product which has a rootkit, remote command and control and egresses data is indistinguishable from malware”.
Then I try and get fractional scaling working on Wayland with my NVidia card and want to gouge my eyes out with frustration that after a decade I still can't do what I can do on a closed source thing that came free with my computer. Actually make that 25 years now. The enterprise crap while horrible, actually mostly does work reasonably well. Sometimes I feel dirty about this.
Quality is therefore relative to the consumer. The attention is on what the engineers care about with Linux, not the users I find. Where there's an impedance mismatch there are a lot of unhappy users.
This is marketoid head-shitting influencers selling garbage to people who have no idea what the fuck they are doing other that compliance box ticking to cover their paranoid vendor induced psychosis. They have no idea about threat modelling, no idea about how an operating system even works. Using the CIA triad, they traded off AVAILABILITY entirely, CONFIDENTIALITY partially by sending every fart a system makes to some cloud company for some false sense of INTEGRITY that the vendor does not even guarantee. In fact I've found fuck all evidence that the product actually does anything at all in a correctly layered security architecture.
This is the diametric opposite of a security proposition. A house of cards built on lies and incompetence. Literally this product is the definition of malware. It egresses data you have no control over. It has built in remote command and control that can take you out. And it runs completely arbitrary code in ring 0 (clearly written by a blind monkey)
I called this ENTIRE thing in March 2023 as a critical business risk and the above people steamrolled it. Literally I have the objections recorded and I'm going to use it at this point to steamroll them the fuck back.
It doesn't matter if it's made of shit if people buy it. It happens to be made of shit though.
I am done with this now. I am so fucking done.
