Re:Writing by hand is still the best way to retain information on Wednesday November 23, 2022 @01:08PM (#33722522)
This was my first thought as well.

I know for me personally; I always absorb more information when I am just listening and not writing.

When I'm writing whatever the teacher is saying, I can't understand it at the same speed. So I just write without actually comprehending the sentences.

But my listening was always so good that I rarely took notes throughout all my school years. I would just stare at the teacher and listen without writing anything.

Re:What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise? on Saturday November 12, 2022 @11:15AM (#33574401)
This is plain nuts.

Regular people workout as well, not just steroid junkies.

Re:Stop using low DNS TTLs (2019) on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @09:32AM (#33532114)
There are use cases for low TTLs and use cases for high TTLs

The statement here is misguided.

Use whatever TTL serves your purpose.

DNS was designed to be distributed and scalable. And in my opinion it is THE MOST scalable protocol as it basically allowed the entire internet to work that way. Any user in the world can get any public DNS record for a site.

You're worried about weedkillers?

I grew up as a heavy gamer, and it became my identity.

I absolutely got addicted to games and I still struggle with functioning in daily life without trying to go back and play 1-2 hours of games each night for the dopamine hit.

More importantly, I missed out on actual real life experiences throughout my childhood all the way till I was 28.

I let me kids play games now, but as long as it doesn't overtake more useful activities (reading, going out, playground, socializing with friends, swimming, biking)

And you KNOW those are the people reading this study to feel good about their hobby

Re:I need structure in my life on Tuesday October 04, 2022 @12:34AM (#33076732)
This comes at an interesting time in my life.

I too decided to take the chaos out of my life, but it was much simpler than I had always thought.

1. Stop watching Youtube and browsing Reddit in your free time 2. Stop playing games in your free time 3. Stop using your phone for wasting time 4. Stop watching TV when you eat 5. Stop listening to podcasts while you sleep 6. Stop eating snacks with TV

What ends up happening as a result - You start to sleep earlier and better - Reading books becomes interesting again - You wake up earlier and feel more fresh - Realize you have a lot of free time - Going outside for a walk is more interesting (less boring) - Work tasks that were boring, now hold your attention more - Finishing work tasks, and house chores, feel more rewarding now

A much shorter summary of this 'diet' is called the 'Dopamine Detox'.

What I'm trying to say is, a lot of this chaos and burnout, is just related to our addiction of time-wasting and addictive habits like browsing youtube and reddit more and more.

Re:Why American cities are broke (2021) [video] on Wednesday August 17, 2022 @10:11AM (#32496639)
That's exactly the point though. Americans have no idea how terrible their cities are because they only compare to themselves.

It's ALL terrible. Please DO compare to Europe. Let's strive for better cities period, not just OK in the context of North America.

Re:Why American cities are broke (2021) [video] on Wednesday August 17, 2022 @10:10AM (#32496622)
Sure, but his points apply to almost every suburb in US and Canada. This isn't a one off problem
Re:Why American cities are broke (2021) [video] on Wednesday August 17, 2022 @10:07AM (#32496586)
Hard disagree. You and must have watched different videos.

He provides concrete examples and solutions.

Re:Why American cities are broke (2021) [video] on Wednesday August 17, 2022 @10:06AM (#32496577)
Is it just me or do Americans just hate hearing that their city design is terrible?
Re:Why American cities are broke (2021) [video] on Wednesday August 17, 2022 @10:00AM (#32496490)
This is addressed in another video by the same person https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWsGBRdK2N0

But basically suburbs can be designed well too.

It needs to have strong public transit that connects to the city (or wherever most people work).

And you still need good walkable and bikable paths everywhere. Because driving cars just sucks for everyone.

Re:Welcome to the M1 Windows project on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @04:49PM (#31659882)
You can't imagine why a Windows user would want to run it on better hardware?

Or that there are Windows workflows that just don't work on OSX?

Or want a fanless laptop with good performance?

Re:I'm an addict on Thursday May 19, 2022 @09:56AM (#31434711)
I can relate to this.

My understanding is you're addicted to dopamine.

You need a dopamine fast. Just take away all your dopamine sources for a 1 day, or 1 week. And then self reflect on its effects on you.

The repeat it every once in a while or whenever you need it.

1 day a week. Or 1 week per month. Something like that.

You've encouraged me to do the same. I'm very unhappy with my own addiction to youtube and social media. Though its more like 2 hours per day maybe

Re:I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone on Tuesday May 17, 2022 @07:56PM (#31417638)
Maybe its just me but the Pixel 5 is the perfect size.

I don't find the iPhone mini being any better in terms of size. They are both usable with one hand.

I'll take YAML/TOML over JSON any day.

Questions

Is this meant to be recursive or authoritative DNS?

Is there an equivalent of query logging?

Are there plans to make this full featured liked BIND, or definitely not because your goal is to keep it "no fat, light"?

Are you talking about 'Views' which is common in BIND DNS configurations.

You're being sarcastic but it seriously sounds like he needs a refresher course.

We didn't wait 20 years for this.

Re:When I made another Monkey Island on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @04:56PM (#31253466)
He's being a baby here.

There's a proper way to take criticism from a passionate fanbase of 20+ years.

IMO the criticism is absolutely justified, just from looking at the screenshots and trailer.

Re:When I made another Monkey Island on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @04:54PM (#31253446)
More like legitimate criticism that is brushed off as "haters" and "mob"
Re:When I made another Monkey Island on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @04:54PM (#31253441)
I don't disagree.

I actually played through and finished EMI. I think its tonnes of fun and arguable better than CMI.

But I won't say the tank controls didn't ruin an otherwise great game

Re:When I made another Monkey Island on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @04:53PM (#31253433)
He's playing the victim and calling them haters.

It's a legitimate criticism about the art style. No one is "hating"

Unless we're at a point where saying anything negative is "hating"
