Looks like someone fell for the C abstract machine trap yet again. No, C is isn’t an abstraction of the machine.

For every complex problem there is a solution that is clear, simple, and wrong.
Re:The PowerShell-Haters Handbook on Thursday April 23, 2026 @07:09AM (#47874307)
This is not the gotcha you think it is. Nobody that has used C++ in a non-trivial setting would regurgitate that Stroustrup quote unironically. C++, much like Powershell, is a warcrime of a language.

I'll give it up to Powershell though, it actually had some good ideas... albeit with awful execution. Can't say the same about C++.

Re:A Grand Vision for Rust on Sunday March 08, 2026 @10:49PM (#47304332)
By all means, write some Go instead—you might want to order a new `if err != nil` button to stave off the RSI. The rest of us are trying to make things better.

Touch some grass, friend.
You can’t pay me to use Matrix, it’s irredeemable trash.

"ai is inevitable, stop resisting" — claude marketing department. if it was so invertible, why are you funding these psyops?
Re:The browser catches homograph attacks. Your terminal doesn't on Tuesday February 03, 2026 @07:44PM (#46879740)
Handy! I feel like this should be built into the terminal emulator though?
Re:Why Go is not my favourite language on Monday February 02, 2026 @09:19PM (#46865550)
From my reading, almost all of it.
You cannot pay me to use a Samsung product. They’ve irreparably damaged my perception of South Korean technology. I implore anyone here to stay clear.
Does the law require them to kill civilians?

None of this is surprising, YC is as incestuous as the rest of the industry. Still, it’s worth calling out. This submission will likely be nuked, too.
Re:Linux Kernel Rust Code Sees Its First CVE Vulnerability on Wednesday December 17, 2025 @09:45PM (#46308391)
If you do something stupid in a block marked "unsafe", it's probably on you, my guy.
Re:Linux Kernel Rust Code Sees Its First CVE Vulnerability on Wednesday December 17, 2025 @09:41PM (#46308371)
Posting this from a green account is just pathetic, my guy. Go outside, touch some grass.
oh look, the average golang fan. here’s a challenge for you: explain _why_ the complexity is bad without:

- resorting to logical fallacies, or

- relying on your unstated assumption that all complexity is bad

Re:Protobuffers Are Wrong on Friday September 05, 2025 @12:16PM (#45140266)
i used protobuffers a lot at $previous_job and i agree with the entire article. i feel the author’s pain in my bones. protobuffers are so awful i can’t imagine google associating itself with such an amateur, ad hoc, ill-defined, user hostile, time wasting piece of shit.

the fact that protobuffers wasn’t immediately relegated to the dustbin shows just how low the bar is for serialization formats.

Re:Ask HN: What are your current programming pet peeves? on Thursday July 17, 2025 @10:03PM (#44600455)
i tried to submit a patch to retroarch and it was one of the least pleasant experiences i've had in a while. makefile hell, layers and layers of incomprehensible macros, and spaghetti code everywhere. no thank you. i may be a masochist but i still respect my time.
