MemTest86 already has a rowhammer test, not sure how it compares to blacksmith but some sticks I have do fail that test and can only be mitigated by setting tREFI extremely low (while also taking a large performance hit).

Most of the higher end hynix/micron/samsung sticks I've tried do not fail at JEDEC or XMP after 7+ passes.

Re:Apple M1 Max Geekbench Score on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @08:40PM (#28938789)
Yeah, that looks correct. With faster ram and PBO it should hit closer to 1800.

Here is my 5600x with PBO enabled and 3800MT/s CL16 DDR4 https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/10516280

5800x would have a max clock of 4950mhz with PBO

Re:Apple M1 Max Geekbench Score on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @02:30PM (#28934226)
That's certainly overclocked or very high PBO offsets, at stock the 5800x gets around 1700-1800 ST.
Re:Apple M1 Max Geekbench Score on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @02:26PM (#28934164)
Single core is similar to the 5900x but multicore is more in line with 3900x.

Quite impressive for a laptop, I'm sure the power consumption will be much higher compared to the M1 but likely no where near desktop parts.

Re:AirPods Max on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @03:54PM (#25351212)
Same. Doesn't hurt that they were $50 on sale. I've had them for over a year with no issues.
Sandy-E to Haswell-E i7's do not officially support 128gb, though there have been reports of it working.

Broadwell-E i7's now officially support 128gb.

All the Xeon equivalents (e5-1650/60,80, etc) support 256-768gb depending on the model, if paired with a consumer board that limit is usually 64-128gb.

Re:Racking Mac Pros on Wednesday May 06, 2015 @09:52PM (#9502901)
Currently, no.

1. Apples EULA does not allow OSX on non-apple hardware. 2. Some major updates can break customizations and require some modifications (bootloaders, etc) to be re-installed

I have no problem helping a friend set up a Hackintosh when they want to save a few thousand dollars (I have set up a few already) with the understanding that they need to backup before doing any system updates and expect things to break after updating.

While Hackintosh's work well for personal use as long as you are somewhat techy and pick the hardware carefully, (putting aside the EULA issue) it does not make sense for anything large scale.

Re:Racking Mac Pros on Wednesday May 06, 2015 @07:48PM (#9502499)
That is your experience. A properly set up Hackintosh (with a custom DSDT and the proper kexts as needed) can be as reliable as a genuine Mac.

Regarding Windows machines, I've had desktops that would be used for months at a time (mostly rendering) without a restart and never crash.

A pretty good way to test for reliability is to let Prime95 and Memtest86 run for a week or so and see if it fails somewhere along the line (obviously proper cooling is a must), many consumer machines will fail this test.

Re:An $89 remanufactured Ubuntu workstation on Tuesday March 03, 2015 @03:13AM (#9136607)
Any time I buy a used board I check the board carefully for any kind of modification or odd looking solder joints and re-flash the bios/uefi with the latest version.

Of course something could still be modified, but so could a board direct from amazon or newegg I suppose.

Re:An $89 remanufactured Ubuntu workstation on Tuesday March 03, 2015 @03:04AM (#9136587)
I'm not sure why they even considered P4's, the pre-prescott P4's don't even have Speedstep. That means they run full voltage/speed all the time which is terribly inefficient.

Core 2 Duos are much more energy efficient, they are not in short supply by any means and cost about the same used ($2-3).

Re:An $89 remanufactured Ubuntu workstation on Tuesday March 03, 2015 @02:51AM (#9136555)
Core 2 Duos and Pentium Dual Cores under 3ghz are fairly energy efficient chips (~65w) and they use Speedstep, etc to keep power consumption low at idle.

Of course newer dual cores and more modern chipsets will use less power overall, although for less demanding uses (web, word processing) I'm not sure if there would be a huge difference.

P4's on the other hand...

Re:Why I Drilled Holes in My MacBook Pro and Put It in the Oven on Tuesday December 30, 2014 @05:48PM (#8817183)
I can assure you that it does work. Not sure about 340f though.

I baked a Nvidia GTX470 at 390f for 10 minutes and it eliminated the artifacts/crashing and has been working fine for months.

It probably won't work forever, but it is at least a temporary fix.

Re:Web GL Ocean Simulation on Tuesday November 26, 2013 @05:19PM (#6804681)
60fps here (3.4ghz Core 2 Quad/GTX 470/Firefox/fullscreen 1920x1200). CPU usage is 9%, GPU usage is 22%.
You can undo in Android, just not with the stock keyboard. Try out A.I.type Keyboard. It may not be the best solution as it should be built in, but it does work.

Re:Wireless HDMI for Everyone on Thursday November 21, 2013 @12:24PM (#6775970)
Interesting, but it seems like it is dropping frames all over the place. I suppose it would be good enough for presentations but not for movie or game use.

I suppose with later iterations it could improve, but I would rather just plug the HDMI directly into the laptop and use a wireless keyboard/mouse if needed.

On another note, I find it hard to believe that Apple still hasn't fixed the color space issues on OS X (it only occurs if you use a different profile other than SRGB). It is clearly visible throughout the video showing the purple menu bar highlight when it should be blue.

Re:Rotate the world on Friday November 08, 2013 @10:30AM (#6696595)
If you are using Windows you might want to give Pale Moon a try, on my system it is much smoother than the official Firefox/Aurora/Nightly.

Pale Moon feels as smooth as the official Firefox does under OS X, for whatever reason the official Firefox for Windows feels terrible on my system (clean profile of course).

Re:Nexus 5 Teardown on Tuesday November 05, 2013 @07:53PM (#6679757)
Exactly. I have a 64gb SD card and a dedicated battery charger with three extra batteries.

As lame as it might seem I just keep a spare battery with me at all times when the unexpected happens and I'm out later than usual or just use my phone too much.

I guess a case with a battery built in work work just as well, but I'm not willing to add the extra bulk.

Re:Razer will not cancel 90%-off test coupons on Saturday April 20, 2013 @08:12PM (#5583308)
USB Overdrive works well too. X-Button Mouse Control is probably the best on Windows.
Re:Razer will not cancel 90%-off test coupons on Saturday April 20, 2013 @08:10PM (#5583307)
Did you try something like X-Mouse Button Control?

It works great on my MX518 so I don't have to use the terrible Logitech software to configure the extra buttons. :)

Re:Galaxy Nexus: 1080p Video on Tuesday October 25, 2011 @09:01PM (#3156648)
1. The only shots with a shallow DOF are the macro shots, this is standard for any point and shoot or modern phone camera.

2. Agreed. But it seems like a lot more post-processing was done on the 4S video, which may have reduced the compression artifacts.

3. That scene looks like it was shot on an overcast day. Even with my Epic 4G it would not be difficult to get that level of shadow detail.

Re:Galaxy Nexus: 1080p Video on Tuesday October 25, 2011 @08:51PM (#3156607)
Which is why I prefer the Nexus video. :)
Re:Galaxy Nexus: 1080p Video on Tuesday October 25, 2011 @08:02PM (#3156467)
I honestly don't think it looks better. I am a fan of "proper" color balance, not cross processed type filtering (instagram, lomo, toy cameras, etc). And I think the OP's is definitely better in that regard.
Re:Android 4.0 SDK Now Available on Wednesday October 19, 2011 @10:46AM (#3130358)
Gingerbread fixes some of the "lag" issues with the partly GPU accelerated UI, mostly noticeable in the notifications pull-down menu.

Opera Mobile (GPU accelerated), with a decent launcher, memory optimizations (V6 Supercharger, or a good Autokiller config), and Android will perform just as good as any other mobile OS. Unfortunately to get great performance Android needs to be rooted.

Sony had some great CRT monitors. I had two IBM P275's (Sony G520), I ran them at 2048x1536@75hz they worked great for years, the colors/black levels were amazing.

Eventually they started getting washed out (no black), I was able to fix it using a 10-Meg ohm (1/4 watt) resistor.

After a year or so the issue came up again and I decided to get two Lenovo L220x's to replace them.. While the colors are quite good on the Lenovo's (calibrated of course), I miss the resolution and original black levels of the P275's.

Re:Delivering fast boot times in Windows 8 on Friday September 09, 2011 @04:54AM (#2977421)
My Vaio Z got about a week of standby on a battery with about 30% charge left. I guess it really depends on the machine.
Re:New gaming laptop with innovative UI by Razer on Saturday August 27, 2011 @03:03AM (#2931027)
While it is true that the Vaio Z is priced higher than the Air, the Vaio Z also has a faster processor (2.3ghz vs 1.7ghz), and can be configured to have up to a 2.7ghz i7, 512gb SSD, 8gb of ram, and a full 1920x1080 display (the Air maxes out at 1.8ghz, 256gb SSD, 4gb of ram and a 1440x900 screen). That alone would be worth it for many users looking for a machine that is closer to a desktop replacement in a small, lightweight form factor.

Oh yeah, it also includes a CD/DVD drive and a decent GPU (although it is external only).

Re:Angry Birds on Chrome on Wednesday May 11, 2011 @09:14PM (#2539145)
Works great in Chrome and Firefox (both nightlies and q6600/9600gt).
Re:Sony loses 12,700 credit card numbers on Wednesday May 04, 2011 @12:05AM (#2512761)
I think you are going a bit overboard, sure Sony may not be the Sony they were in the 80s or 90s, but they do still make quality hardware.

The Playstation 3 is probably the most reliable console (hardware wise) out of the current generation consoles, I have not had any issues with mine and neither has anyone that I know personally, I can't say the same for the Xbox 360.

I bought a Sony Vaio Z 13" a few years ago and it has stood up to a lot without any issues, sure it may be very light and feel a bit "plasticy" but it is surprisingly tough.

Both of my brothers bought Sony LCD's a few years ago and they have not had any issues.

A friend of mine works in the geek squad as a home theater installer and by far the least reliable name brand TV's are made by Samsung, Sony is one of the more reliable brands.

Re:On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X on Friday December 17, 2010 @03:06PM (#2017553)
<rant> Funny thing is every time I use Mac OS, I find myself tinkering more than usual, whether it be on my Hackintosh, or a friends Macbook, although the Hackintosh did require a bit of tinkering just to get it running 100%.

I guess I'm always trying to make OS X a bit more usable to a primarily Linux/Windows person.

When I go down to that dock or activate expose I feel like I am losing precious time watching those animations (probably just me), Quicksilver does help but if I could just turn off the animations (like in Windows / YouNameIt Linux Distro) it would feel much nicer.

I tend to use Windows (design, production and games) and Ubuntu (programming, server related tasks) primarily and I have them set up very similar, using "Expose with no animation" (switcher and compiz), Launchy, very simple grey themes, a "Windows 7-like dock" for Ubuntu, and using the same fonts and Firefox/Thunderbird profiles, it is almost seamless other than the restarting part.

This works quite well and allows me to get real work done without flashy stuff going on all over the place or processes running in the background eating up precious CPU cycles that I can't seem to disable without breaking something.

It could be I'm just a hacker/tinkerer by nature, and when a system like OS X says I can't do something it makes me want to do it even more.

So, Apple.. Where is that option to disable all animations, or to show folders at the top of the finder (without totalfinder, or organizing by type)? </rant>

Re:On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X on Friday December 17, 2010 @02:29PM (#2017377)
Animations (Spaces/Expose) cannot be disabled or changed through OnyX, am not sure what you are talking about.
