It was possible before, I had used it until last year!

But earlier this year I checked in with some 240 JPY left and found out that I couldn't charge it during the trip... Luckily it was enough for the 2 stations in the Osaka Metro to save me an awkward moment.

> Do you think the average members of the public are gonna start Googling stuff on Bing anytime soon?

They are already, by accident. And a large amount of them doesn't even realize it's a different page...

I was there in June and cost of living felt 30-40% cheaper than Germany, it was amazing (for me)
I have a similar background. Used Androids from 2010-2018 and switched to iOS.

Some arguments were: Android's capabilities became less over time. I had cool apps until 4.4 Kitkat which automated toggling on/off WLAN/GPS/mobile network among others, but these APIs were restricted more and more over time so the benefits became less.

Another fact was that I calculated that iPhones were cheaper than all Android I owned when taking resale value into the calculation. That Apple gives OS updates for 5+ years helped a lot here, I had experienced <1 year on flagship models before. (buying 2 year old iPhone and selling it at 4 year old was cheapest/year)

But one of the biggest reasons was that I never trusted Google much. For example I never used the feature to use WiFi networks to get coarse location. Which meant worse UX (had to click NO on a dialogue each time I activated GPS) but also a "feature" the iPhone had (better location).

This is obviously a very personal point of view and it might be very different today, as I used Android in its earlier years.

The cash situation changed rapidly since 2019, you can get very far without any if you desire.
TBH this is not a pay issue, no matter whether I can afford it.

I would hate that a stranger enters my house to clean, and I would hate it even more when I was not at home.

Yes this is massively annoying. Especially since the "old" watch later button will appear for a flash moment where it used to be.
Re:Ask HN: Mobile phone addiction help? on Tuesday May 04, 2021 @03:30AM (#27034853)
If your mobile only bank account is the only thing stopping you from ditching your iPhone, I would suggest switching your bank account.

Yes, a retail bank might have higher fees. But if spending 10 bucks a month can get you rid of your addiction that's a great deal. They will definitely help you with the transition to gain a new customer.

Geizhals is amazing! I started using it for price comparison almost 15 years ago, but nowadays I use it mainly as a database to filter for products which fit my needs and are available.
Re:How and why I stopped buying new laptops on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @01:34PM (#25520555)
Yes that's fair. I did the upgrade from the 750 Ti and skipped the 1050 Ti for the same reason.

You can get the 1650 that runs with 75W. There's even a passive model out there, the Palit KalmX.

I refuse to buy a GPU with extra power connectors.

Re:MS Flight Simulator vs. Real Life on Sunday May 10, 2020 @02:42PM (#23134925)
I pasted it in the reverse Google image search and it seems to be Marismas Nacionales Nayarit in Mexico.

My parents pay a similar amount for 70% of a 16/1 MBit connection. But that is not quite rural, it's one of the richest towns in the country and part of a big agglomeration.

StackOverflow even has a setting in your profile to block those. You have to be logged in, of course.

I tried to jump...

I can't be the only one who unnecesarily jumps around in every game unless it's penalized by some sort of stamina system.

It's not quite 100%, the merchant has costs associated with using cash: The time a cashier has to spend counting the cash register's content, time spent on bank runs to put away earnings/get extra coins for change, some fees associated with it, some amount that gets "lost"...

I remember the cost was less than credit cards take, but not much lower than Girocard payments.

Must be 2015, as the story starts there.

Also, September 2019 is in the future.

> According to [2], 23% of Germans own stocks (although I remember that this number used to be around 15% a few years ago)

I too had a lower number in memory (~11%), and the first result I looked up [1] showed 16%, sourced from [2].

You and we say "after tax", but actually it's after tax, health insurance, unemployment insurance, pension fund and few more peanuts.

There are forms of voluntary payments, but a bonus is not one of them (despite its name). It's range is usually part of the contract.

You can cheat around paying more than the minimum bonus by picking yearly targets (quantifiable like for sales) which are absurdly high.

I never had a bonus, so please take this as 3rd hand information.

But when internet forums count as social media, few can provide a complete list of websites they have engaged with.

I definitely can't recall every one of those I had been on in the last decades.

I found the information on airline websites rather accurate (n seats left at this price). I guess this comes directly from how it's stored in the back end booking system (0..8, 9+ seats per booking class)

On legacy carrier official websites, not OTA or LCC like Ryanair.

On the after-checkout form I am already confronted with choosing which 3 of the discount vouchers of "partner" shops I want to pick up. But HURRY only 10 minutes remaining to claim.
Not just sports, other careers like musicians suffer from the same.

I could live with them, they should just come down and take my blood.

But all they do is buzzing around my head when I try to sleep!

Re:I turned my interview task for Google into a startup on Thursday May 16, 2019 @10:02AM (#19929121)
My high school physics teacher did the same. He would take the tests he prepared himself to check whether the scope was appropriate for the allocated time. The factor of 3 was spot on for this kind of estimation.

These YouTube topics are hilarious, I regularly get the recommendation for the "Pets" topic filled with cooking videos.

But content-wise, it does not feel much different than the usual "recommended videos" section.

Honestly I would criticise if it was 32-bit.

When can I finally get rid of this stupid "Program Files (x86)" folder which annoys me every time I click into the wrong one looking for my program, when even new programs are released as 32-bit?

Re:Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed? on Sunday April 07, 2019 @02:29AM (#19595148)
Swiping input yes, but the implementation of Swype was superior to the others like Swiftkey.

I can't really describe, but it was better at capturing the words I swiped and also handled multiple languages better.

I think Baseball is excellent to watch while in the background, e.g. in a restaurant. There is a lot of build-up when you can continue eating and during the few seconds of action you can watch the TV. And if you missed, there is enough time to show replays.

Sumo is similar to this.
