Internet randos, executives. Next in line should be fellow programmers "Why the f should I tell you my reasons, if you are competent programmer you should allready know everything".

but if production and rental businesses get separated, we are back to square one.
I wonder how much of this consistency is for the sake of feeling in control. (i.e. I hypothesise, that it is only about emotions of the boss)
Some proof would be nice.

Wikipedia mentions that it is contested if it is intentional or not.

Personaly for me, intentionality doesn't seem far fetched, given gulags, forced relocations to siberia without supplies and liberal presentation of history/facts (ussr guides said that kaliningrad is russian from olden times).

problem is - its either nato or russian puppet (e.g. russia would force ukraine to invade moldova)

germany is big AND wealthy buyer. Not eveybody can buy so much at current price.

also storage of natural gas is problematic.

Re:Nord Stream 2 declares bankruptcy on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @05:29PM (#30520931)
But now, it is much closer to home.

Europe sees a lot of parallels with what happend right before ww2 (germany taking a bite here and there; testing responses; extending influence and gathering resources)

couple of months of sanctions. Not sure how many russians will want to endure. Of course putin will try to turn it into some patriotic narative, but truth will spread. Holding ukrain will not be simple. People there have tasted freedom. It will not be so easy to feed government news to them.

Re:Nord Stream 2 declares bankruptcy on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @05:04PM (#30520673)
idea was that if europe trades with russia, russia can be influenced to act in a civil manner. (at least partially)

there is also fact that german ex cancelor (schroeder) is at russian gas and oil companies now (i.e. russia made good friends to make right decisions)

If world is global, which it is, gas can be bought from some where else.

Re:Upper limits on partial Dyson spheres in the Milky Way on Saturday February 19, 2022 @02:21AM (#30395072)
I assume that some of fusions done by the star are net energy consumption (i.e. not usable for energy production)

All fundamental research is reaserch for the sake of knowledge, for the sake of satisfying curiosity.

Once it is done, possibly much much much later, somebody may stumble upon it and use it in some creative (and unforseen) ways for other research.

On the other hand if you give any probability to alien existence, then this is very much practical already in the search for them.

It's abstract thinking and ability to work with new math constructs on the spot.

Thanks for the link.

Maybe you have data on:

- total installed storage capacity as percentage of daily electricity usage (preferably 95th-percentile daily usage). Hopefully this percentage increases every year.

- how often should we expect to replace batteries. Wikipedia says 400-1200 cycles. Does this mean that whole world storage capacity must be replaced every 400-1200 days?

It extends to other policies as well
Not all ideas are worth pursuing. Continuing as-is most of the time (like 99.99%) is the appropriate choice. Do you move every time a stranger on TV/street suggests that?

Sane people find arguments for stuff they do. If they don't have reasoning (scientific or emotional) for their behaviour, they either change or they aren't sane.
Or maybe you have a soul.

Positions of power are already taken by people on socio-path (pun intended). So for society nothing changes.

Salesmen already lie. There are already a lot of scammer ceos. People can deal with those by ignoring them. What people can not ignore is gun/knife in their face and a death of a loved one.

Re:The Philosophy of Work [pdf] on Friday January 14, 2022 @05:39PM (#29941496)
not strictly necessary. laws could ve passed that 0.001% is taken over each year. this would be sslowerrl, but would have lower resistance.

> What we currently have, and have had for most of human history, is feudalism under many different names.

True.

Though this is the only stable outcome.

Even in communist country there are positions of power (which can be symbolically equated to lords).

Given group of people there is hierarchy. Given selfishness, people tend to use control to ensure more control.

Depends on defintion of "can".

Physically you can. Legally not.

Re:Train burglaries in LA on Friday January 14, 2022 @05:42AM (#29932843)
I think it's a plus for society if some criminals go from petty theft to white collar sociapth investor conning CEO. (or more realistically salesman)

Society saves on the need for physical security.
