"My facts will blow your mental framework out of it's hinges"

Standard degeneracy narrative about foreign mind viruses and slave morality.

This stuff has been passé since before Land moved to Shanghai.

"Can an LLM produce a decent results page with clear graphs showing the trends and key findings of a vibe coded poll of HN users?"

Apparently not.

Assuming the anecdote at the beginning wasn't also dreamed up by an LLM, there is something profoundly depressing about a working academic using AI to generate an article to counterpoint his own students fears about that same AI taking their jobs.
The US paid for its alliances, hegemony, and safe shipping lanes by providing a comprehensive nuclear and conventional security umbrella via NATO.

Framing calculated realpolitik as an act of charity that the people of Europe should be grateful for is pretty cynical. It's always been a trade-off. The president has always complained publicly about the cost, precisely because admitting that reality doesn't win votes at home, but narratives about European leeches taking advantage of the US does.

If you want to see what it will look like after the US stops paying the bill for its incredibly privileged position, you can read about how much fun the process was for Britain in the 1950s.

Re:AI's top startups are barely publishing their research on Thursday July 30, 2026 @07:16AM (#49108432)
The publication model in academia is predatory and elitist, but have you considered that your paper just wasn't that good?

Almost every scientific paper published in every field is "world first" research, and the job of tier 1 journals is to decide what deserves to be signal boosted, and what doesn't.

This response to rejection to me confirms the fears implicit in the article linked above. Not only is private AI research not transparent and not documenting its work, it also has a deep rooted culture issue.

Stuff like this is why I always read to the bottom of the comments.

People on HN are really something.

Since this guy really loves Michael Levin, thought I'd share a little anecdote.

I had the unhappy privilege of attending one of his academic talks during his xenobots era, where he claimed his artificial living systems could seek and sense food based on local gradient. He was asked during the talk whether he'd controlled for mechanical effects, after all maybe the xenobot was just preferentially diffusing towards the food rather than sensing it. Levin responded by calling the guy an idiot, and seemed to suggest that there was no difference between these explanations.

Charming guy.

Surely you're capable of understanding that the term "worthwhile" has multiple meanings.
Re:U.S. Science Is in Chaos on Thursday June 18, 2026 @09:43AM (#48585183)
This conflation between "useful" and "profitable" is maybe the most annoying motte and bailey that industry people like to employ.
