There are some areas where it's easy to decide like when people complain about the way movement feels, but separating "writing bad because everyone acts flat and out of character" from "writing bad because LGBT and pronouns" is impossible because all you see in the review is "bad writing".
In most games you can't just fully drop a feature because other systems are designed with it in mind. It will end up broken like Veilguard or Andromeda. You can eat the cost and finish it or spend even more time cutting it out properly. The only cheap solution is release the unfinished game in early access, add the delayed features after and then do 1.0 with the original scope.
AAA publishers can't do that because they love their movie style reveals at industry shows and building up insane hype before launch. They also don't want to sell the game at a discount during EA which is standard practice for indies.
And selling an unfinished game with the promise that it will get fixed later is a bad look when you have thousands of employees, no matter what actually happened behind the scenes.
Or the names of biblical prophets like Ezra or Elisha. Not very popular today but you can find a lot of them in 19th century records.
I think there are two solutions. You can make students repeat only the failed class and take it with their normal classes next year like in college. Or a requirement based system where you can only graduate after passing every class on the plan but you can attempt them as many times as you want (even after you're out of school and working full time).
There is no hard cap and no limit on doing things that don't cost money so no one is ever prevented from speaking (that would open censorship challenges). It doesn't need to survive strict scrutiny because all candidates are treated equally making it viewpoint neutral topic discrimination. And Congress has a long established power to tax basically anything they want.
All of that money should go to lower funded candidates so spending above the limit becomes self defeating. Republican mega donors might end up supporting a small communist party more than their own.
It's also the only way to get perfect alignment in plain text. With proportional fonts you need a full GUI library.
Fiduciary duty forces companies to maximize profit and that's not a good thing. Every dollar paid out to shareholders is both a dollar not invested in growing the economy through more production and a transfer from the working class to capital. It also forces lower product quality, layoffs and anti competitive actions.
We need more companies that choose to not go down that path. They should just put workers and customers first instead of their weird "ethical" principles and cult like beliefs.
In real life they "just" want to capture the US economy, replace most workers with AI, become trillionaires, then control the world by making ClaudeGPT influence peoples opinions and write backdoors into code. And they need to get open models banned in the process.
The Chinese just want to make money and beat America. Mistral and BFL want to prove Europe can still innovate. They don't have evil goals so they're not evil people.
> But we’ve just shown you how this apparent intelligence arises from the bottom up, with just four neurons and two connections. There’s no magic here. In this view, behavior emerges from neural circuits.
Isn't the conclusion here that very simple behaviors like the sparks are intelligent? I would say even a single neuron has some tiny amount of intelligence, and what the author means by "no magic" and "emergent behavior" is just a different perspective that minimizes it.
The only valid reason to be against an optional feature is the maintenance burden, I don't think it's too much here but I also can't speak for the Signal team.
All of this being used in practice might be more than 50 years away but there is no biological reason why it should be impossible. Just a lot of work, too much for any single company or government. It will take global coordination, massive investments and maybe the end of capitalism but I think we can pull it off as a civilization.
There are parts of the community where it's a lot better (atmosphere and open source devs, some digital artists who are not vocally pro/anti AI) but most people will see the front page that's almost exclusively US politics and get turned off.
I don't know how to fix this. Maybe create a new site that starts out focused on a specific large, politically mixed group like gaming or football fans and then expands to a general audience. Or use a personalized algorithm by default and initialize it randomly so new users see more diverse content.
I don't have a problem with me or anyone else giving away our labor for free. It's not like strike breaking in a unionized industry. This is only taking money from companies like Adobe that get their expensive tools replaced, and giving some of it to AI providers.
When you put that together it's obvious. Being a bad person leads to getting rich and having strong conservative views, and if you have both you become a right wing politician easily.
Artists ideologically opposed to AI are not the intended audience, they picked it up to show everyone they really mean what they say.
Give literal zero interest loans from a state bank based on social value and economic priorities, just like they do in China. And set up an extreme progressive tax (90% top bracket) on returns that are paid out to owners to make sure everything gets invested back into production.
More investment is the driver of economic growth. All the bad parts of ZIRP came from letting companies use the money for unproductive activity. If it's used efficiently the downward pressure from higher product supply will be stronger than inflation from more money in the system. And you get more demand in the labor market leading to higher wages.
The problem with that thinking is not everyone is invested equally or in proportion to how much they pay in taxes. It's a transfer to people who can afford to invest more of their income, paid by everyone else.
