What is difficult with ffmpeg is the sub-language in each argument, which depends on the filter you’re using. I can learn to lookup the manual, but if I have to go to the internet to learn the syntax of the filter, I’m better off googling my usecas.
We use colons for the same reason as in English, but there is a space before colons in French (Microsoft Word inserts it automatically for you in French), and no uppercase after the colon.
Re:Marriage Costs in China Are Out of Control on Sunday September 30, 2018 @08:20PM (#18109221)
There are studies that the larger the bed (at home) and the fancier the reception, the shorter the marriage. But more friends means longer marriage. Basically a barbecue with heaps of mates predicts the longest marriages.

Of course the stats above are the land of correlations-not-causations; larger bed may mean financially more stable therefore more independant and less dependent on the partner’s income, or similar. Still fun ;)

In French, no space before a comma or a period (unless want to explicitly communicate your disdain for computery things or you’re above 60) but we do put a space before : ? !

Example: « Pas de palais : pas de palais ! »

(^Quote from the Asterix movie that will be way more useful to you for making French friends in a bar than saying « I can’t speak French » in French)

Re:Atlassian's new terms forbid benchmarking on Sunday September 30, 2018 @10:15AM (#18106236)
Atlassian has always forbidden to talk about the performance of their products in their ToS and in their previous EULA. We all know why, but we don’t talk about it.

One of my customers even raised the issue with them, saying it would cause harm to the company if it came to be known, but they dodgeball’ed it with legal.

I work with beaten husbands and most often, the beating starts because of their inability to produce income for the wife. Most divorces start after a layoff too.

If you believe you have value beyond your ability to produce, it’s nice, many people transform beliefs into truth by excluding all opposite evidence. Meanwhile, keeping the wife is way more correlated with produce than other factors like weight or unmeasurable things (aka: love and attention).

or Gmail. From there, control on any online account you have.

Gmail used to be the argument to log in to their services. Now, if you use Gmail, it’s probably better to dodge the other services, by fear of losing Gmail.

I didn’t give facebook my phone, my email has timed out (and facebook knows it, it deactivated my email) and I forgot my password, more or less intentionally. So the only thing tying me to Facebook is my browser cookie. I have to say, I’m surprised I’ve been able to keep this account open for years in this state, it’s almost as if they really wanted me to stay. But it’s possible to keep a facebook account alive with no accurate contact information.
Gmail itself was in beta, until recently. Everything was in beta.

Re:Macron Push to Drop CIA Code Quickens as Trump Calls EU Foe on Monday September 10, 2018 @08:14AM (#17951192)
Problem in Europe is that there’s always a chase against rich people, too. One could not build Apple in France, they would get mugged – at best you get laws against the concentration of money.

Meanwhile you get benefits if your startup is in one of the approved sectors and employing doctorates. You don’t get money if you are just reusing proven tech like Apple does; You have to do research. That means we fund research a lot, while we tax implementation. I guess it’s mostly great for competing countries.

And thus, the economy is mostly guided in Europe, as opposed to innovative.

Re:Why restaurants became so loud on Saturday July 28, 2018 @06:30AM (#17632528)
In Sydney I would always avoid the main CBD street (George St). It’s so noisy with cars, it doesn’t only prevent people from talking, but also thinking... It’s a classical case of 3-lane street with busses going 60kmh, with glass buildings on both sides, so as a pedestrian you’re stuck in a resonnance enclosure.
That is statistically the most usual ending of your story in 2018, if that comforts you. Be strong.

Be aware that there are thousands of people who empathize with your situation, whether or not you succeeded to find life after separation from the mother, we actually gather together to discuss problems and potential solutions, because — most importantly — we (and I assure you there are many women among us) admire what divorced fathers do for society and we think you are very important to the betterment of this world.

No license required? nor fee? I mean, if you can rent any physical media it’s a big loss of revenue for a studio, I’ve always assumed the studios got a share of rentals.

blablacar.com limits the complaints to 120 characters. And once, they gave the complaint to the driver before they rated me, so the driver rated mr 0/5.
Re:Digital Exile: How I Got Banned for Life from AirBnB on Saturday July 14, 2018 @03:15AM (#17529231)
Look, I went last week to the police station reporting a minivan who tailed me, then overtook me on the right and drove back into my car. Granted I wasn’t going at full speed (I was maintaining distance with the car in front, which made the minivan driver highly unhappy), but it was at 110km/h and we could all have died. Then the driver flew off. That makes 4 counts of infringement, 5 if you include attempted murder.

Response from the judiciary: The prosecutor won’t charge the guy, because the French courts are overwhelmed with same situations with multi-casualty accidents. I wonder how we got here.

France.

Re:What it takes to stand up to authority on Friday July 13, 2018 @02:59PM (#17525722)
Isn’t that a reproduction of the (well-criticized) Stanford experiment, which already didn’t need to be demonstrated because we already demonstrated it with the Nazi horror?
Re:Digital Exile: How I Got Banned for Life from AirBnB on Friday July 13, 2018 @02:46PM (#17525632)
If I left bad rating to carpooling drivers who drive unsafely... I’d do it every time. For some reason, although I’m ok with one offense at a time, drivers really want to both phone and drive over the speed limit, and tail the next guy, at the same time, and the 4 witnesses in the car don’t worry them...
Why didn’t they keep both the touchbar and the F keys. That would have been so awesome for developers, it would have enabled so many usecases without killing existing ones.
My iPhone volume gets more quiet over time. I used to be able to do the washing up while listening to Youtube or Netflix on speaker, I can’t anymore. I used to be able to listen to Youtube on the street with earplugs, not anymore. It decreased by a notch (30%) when I installed iOS 11.3. Never upgraded since.

GDPR applies if you are a European citizen visiting a website while on holiday in USA, for example. It doesn’t seem to me that GDPR stops when crossing a border. Which is why it has so much worldwide reach.

The public safety of no people having different political opinion, of no people who would want to raise awareness on the problem of Amazon for this instance, because they could cause unsafe words being told to your ears.
Re:Yes, Amazon Is Tracking People on Friday July 06, 2018 @05:12PM (#17475161)
If a European goes there, he’ll have to sign a GDPR agreement? but if the city grew tired of that, they could forbid access to Europeans altogether. Which I’m not surprised would happen one day, perhaps not under this form, but becausr of our overprotected status.
« A door seal’s gonna cost as much as a new machine sir. » Every repairman.

It’s a difficult economic issue. Suitably skilled repairmen only exist medium economies, where we produce enough income to teach youngsters soldering, but when the economy is not developed as much as to have marketers take the power over the makers (think Juicero). In the Western economy today, repairmen are more salesmen on the field than actual people capable of repairing anything. I’ve never seen one actually repairing an appliance.

I have my doubt whether it’s really the machines getting built in such a way that repairs are impossible, oftentimes it does seem like a little more search could have found the defective wire, but let’s be honest, if they want to survive in a big city, soldering won’t pay enough. And that’s where the economy is surprising. Somehow those repairman jobs have higher hourly rates than replacing the machine, meaning shipping a new 50-kg appliance across the world is less costly than shipping a repairman across New York.
