My understanding from the OPs comment was that IBMs failure to cannabalize it's AS/400 market led to the failure of it's PC business. IBM chose to stifle it's own product to keep a more profitable product alive and as a result IBM's PC business failed. That sounds like exactly how things should work in ideal free market capitalism. The idea isn't that every business will choose to make better products to deal with competitive pressure, but that those who don't will die.

A password booklet works well at home, but it's obviously much less secure if you wanted to sign in to a service while in public on your phone for example. One of the major benefits of a password manager is that your passwords are present, encrypted, on all of the device you need them on. Most people don't only need passwords at home, so the odds of theft or loss of the password book are much higher than your example makes it out to be. If we're talking about an average user, the solution of only sign into services at home isn't really an option.
Re:Offensive Tweet Quiz on Thursday May 20, 2021 @03:26PM (#27225868)
I think the quiz as it stands is a good way to demonstrate how bad twitter is. In particular I got a few sets of tweets that were identical and had to choose one as offensive at random.

I think a better measure of how accurate a filter is overall would be to show 1 tweet and response at a time and pick offensive or not offensive and then compare to the algorithms.

I get the sense that biometrics are not very future proof. People leave fingerprints and DNA on everything they touch and faces and eyes are seen by cameras all the time. Biometrics work now, but in the near future I suspect the technology to take images of peoples faces/fingerprints and reproduce their likeness to fool a biometric sensor will be a commodity. Once that happens biometrics will be near useless because you essentially have no way to respond to leaked biometric data, it can't be changed.

I found it bizarre that the Treasurer gets to (arbitrarily?) pick which platforms this applies to and that only 2 platforms, Facebook and Google, were chosen. Maybe I'm just missing the information, but why isn't there just a definition of a platform this should apply to? I'm pretty far removed from this issues, but it smells like some large news organization decided they wanted to get some free money from Facebook and Google so they lobbied for this law.
