Yeah, I don't get it.

If you could install linux, however, then I would buy one yesterday.

If you think a vertical scroll slop tablet is the same as a portable game console, then why not just get them the console instead?

I would have loved this as a kid!

Re:Overgrown, when plants invade your abandoned tabs on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:02AM (#50241030)
Surprising there's only one comment mentioning tab unloading. I'm the kind of person who has hundreds of tabs opened (422 right now), and this tool is useless for me because at any time only ~20 of them are loaded. And I'm not going to visit a tab to see how overgrown it is, something like this would work better if it worked on tab items in the tab bar instead of the contents of the tabs themselves.

Cool. Where can I buy one.

I use AHK to bind XB2 (the top side mouse button) + scroll to scroll fast, I agree that it is very useful. I got inspired by VS Code using alt+scroll for fast scroll and wanted that everywhere.
An APK is an installer, not a binary. You have to be an "app" to do anything in Android. Which includes writing to the framebuffer. I don't know enough about Android so I'd love to be proven wrong. Give me an `xclock` equivalent that I can just run.
I know it is entirely possible for Google to uniquely identify me for each account, but I choose to believe they don't go out of their way to use EVERY possible information about you to track you and only use things that you "accept" via their EULAs, like syncing contacts or logging in to the same service with both accounts, etc.
>but this will never be mainstream and this was implied in the question of the post (Will Linux phones become a viable alternative to the Android/iOS duopoly?)

The post goes into detail about the reason for the current duopoly is the difficulty in procuring modern SOCs with linux support, nothing to do with how said phones will be used.

And I don't really care about being able to bank on my phone, I would gladly buy a cheap android device for it if they stop you from being able to bank on desktop devices, I just need linux on phones because of how much android sucks for daily use and how annoying it is to do anything on it. If we do get the ability to run android on modern hardware, it stops being necessary to have a separate desktop/laptop as well, I could just use a dock, or just a keyboard and mouse instead, especially since the Macbook Neo has shown current mobile hardware is more than enough for "casual" desktop use.

I don't think you understand the reason people want mobile linux. I want to be able to run arbitrary binaries and get access to graphics primitives on my phone, AOSP does none of this. I honestly don't even get the point of AOSP, the way you don't for mobile linux.
I used to do this, but an increasing number of apps fail to work without play services. Luckily Google still lets you create accounts on android phones, so you can create a fresh account with a random name for every phone, and take care you don't give it access to something identifiable.

I love Q Hayashida! I should catch up to Dai Dark.

At home, Atlas Shrugged. It's an interesting story even if you don't care about the allegories, I'm really enjoying it so far. But it will probably take me half a year to finish it at this rate, since I can only read it on weekends.

At work I'm currently trying to read SF light novels from the turn of the millennium. I finished Murasaki no Qualia some time ago, and it's just as amazing as I remember the manga being when I read it as a teen. Right now I'm reading Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu. Sadly very few of these are translated. The Last and First Idol story collection is also a good read if you're interested in this genre.

It's very much possible to imagine that.

Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @08:35AM (#49800223)
I agree. Trackpads also come with gesture support for things like switching between windows which I found difficult to live without. Unfortunately it's not very ergonomic to use a laptop with it's trackpad when you're using multiple screens.
For what it's worth

>Results:

>We synthesized data from 137 systematic reviews (>30,000 participants). Compared with no exercise (control), RT significantly improved muscle strength, size (hypertrophy), power, endurance, contraction velocity, gait speed, balance, and multiple physical function outcomes. Few RT prescription (RTx) variables affected primary adaptations. However, voluntary strength was enhanced by lifting heavier loads (≥80% one-repetition maximum), through a complete range of motion, for 2–3 sets, at the beginning of training sessions, and ≥2 sessions/wk. Muscle hypertrophy was enhanced by higher volumes (≥10 sets/wk) and eccentric overload. Power was enhanced by moderate loads (30%–70% one-repetition maximum), low-to-moderate volume (≤24 repetitions⋅sets), Olympic-style weightlifting, and power RT (fast concentric phase). Power RT enhanced physical function. Training to momentary muscle fatigue, equipment type, exercise complexity, set structure, time under tension, blood flow restriction, and periodization did not consistently impact training outcomes.

>Conclusions:

>Healthy adults should perform progressive RT, with variable prescription consistent with our findings, to improve muscle function, size, and physical performance. Muscle strength, hypertrophy, power, and certain components of physical function can be enhanced by manipulating the RT variables highlighted.

According to OP >It would be delusional to expect any sort of press and related (like search engine or aggregation) freedom, or to try to compare this to anything in any other developed country.

Israel is responsible for killing more journalists than any other country. Google has profited by providing services to Israel in the ongoing genocide.

But you see people talking about the mini almost every time there's a discussion about iPhones (or phones in general). Surely it would have been worth it to Apple to keep the mini alive just to avoid the negative press and pretend they care about their consumers beyond making a profit. But I guess it really isn't possible to do things like that in a publicly traded company.

Found this in an older upload of the same URL https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41837782

He does seem kinda hateful in general, the list seems to have a pretty low threshold to have someone on there. Vincent Canfield just seems to be there for being a "free speech absolutist," and many others are there for vaguely right wing beliefs. Guillermo Rauch looks pretty pathetic knowing that he reposts Musk's tweets, but is that something you would put someone on a list for?

And I don't understand what this line is supposed to mean

Re:Reverse Engineering Unknown File Formats with ImHex on Thursday September 03, 2026 @07:46AM (#49548756)
I like the idea of ImHex and tried using it for something, but there is some kind of limit to the parsers you write (IIRC it was some kind of memory limit) which feels very short for real, non-toy binary files.
Re:Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @03:08AM (#49532774)
You don't need a sim card to make accounts for a phone in the first place. Not sure how, but on android devices they let you make an account without giving them a phone number. Probably because even Google realizes how bad gating application installs on new phones on having a phone number would look.

The problem is that even if you have separate google accounts on each android device, Google can still track you by looking at your contacts.

>it's not that different from a deb or rpm repository

The difference is that the default app stores require you to make an account to be able to use them. This would rightfully be considered insane on desktop OSs, yet is considered normal for phones.
