Re:Regexp-based RFC822 email address validation on Friday November 16, 2012 @09:46AM (#4794027)
It boggles my mind too. This is new to people here?
RCN, on the other hand, simply raised my rate without even apologizing. They pretended to give me a promotion of "increased speed" and then the promotion "expired" and my rate went up. And oops, the old speed and old rate was no longer being offered.
Re:The Fetishization of Sex as a Growth Strategy for Religions on Friday November 09, 2012 @03:41PM (#4764652)
The author seems to have forgotten that birth control is (mostly) a modern invention.
Re:Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old on Friday November 09, 2012 @08:49AM (#4762741)
I never said it was the worst. I just said there are others that are better. Please.
Re:Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old on Thursday November 08, 2012 @05:47PM (#4760308)

How much money do you think a few generations' of slavery is worth?
I don't know. How many years of race based discrimination is it worth?

Would you like to suggest one?
As many others in this thread have suggested: actual economic disadvantages, such as poverty, single parent household, etc...
Re:Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old on Thursday November 08, 2012 @05:44PM (#4760301)
Yes, they will all be flawed, but not all of them will be as flawed as skin color. Just because something is hard, doesn't mean it's OK to do something easy and bad.
Re:Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old on Thursday November 08, 2012 @12:58PM (#4758932)
If the US government wants to atone for its immoral actions in the past it should pay reparations not institute a system of race based discrimination.

If, on the other hand, the US government wants to help disadvantaged people gain a level economic footing with the rest of the population they should use a much better predictor of disadvantage than skin color.

Re:Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old on Thursday November 08, 2012 @12:56PM (#4758918)
You must justify it because you are advocating for race based discrimination.

We have already proposed an alternative: economics based discrimination. It is better because it captures the group of people that deserve help more accurately.

We are not whining, we are having a discussion.

Re:Rob Pike: Go at Google on Friday October 26, 2012 @10:25PM (#4705115)
There does not seem to be any indication to the user of what they're supposed to do to get the next slide, or even that there is a next slide.

EDIT: Well, OK, now that I maximized there is. But there was no indication that I was missing content to the left or right either. I appreciate simplicity but you gotta give first time users something to get them going.

Re:dl.google.com now served by Go on Friday October 26, 2012 @07:46PM (#4704755)
Knowing the languages only by reputation, you could try D which is more community oriented. I kind of wish it had a backer like Google, because I like it's name better and I heard of it before Go :-) I also hate implicit semi-colons. If you don't want them, then don't have them at all, like python.

Re:SSH key and passwordless login basics for developers on Thursday October 25, 2012 @09:33AM (#4697557)
It might be useful, but it's trivially obtainable by anyone who needs it by googling, and irrelevant to anyone who isn't looking for it at the time.
There is nothing legal about downloading pirated content (in the US), but the penalties for uploading (distributing) are much higher, which is why those are the people that get sued.
Re:How I made Stripe as easy to use as Paypal in 5 days on Saturday October 20, 2012 @08:53PM (#4678577)
The title is stupid, and titles matter. PayPal is PayPal not because you can send money based on email addresses but because it was the company that figured out how to do it in a way and at a time that won the market. Making a PayPal like website has little to do with why people know the name PayPal, or the company's significance. It's like setting up a toy online book store and saying "How I created Amazon in five days". It's meaningless and stupid. And sometimes things are so stupid they're not worth being "constructive" about.
Re:Philip Roth: An Open Letter to Wikipedia on Saturday October 20, 2012 @08:33PM (#4678545)
Didn't this already make the aggregator rounds a few months ago when it first came out?
Re:How I made Stripe as easy to use as Paypal in 5 days on Friday October 19, 2012 @08:42PM (#4675947)
Paypal? Or a toy example kind of like Paypal?
Sigh. Yes, we know. Hollywood Accounting.
I used to value Ars because they had actual writers, editors, and original content. This new trend they have of being another content aggregator is disappointing.
Re:If You're Too Busy to Meditate, Read This on Friday October 12, 2012 @09:08PM (#4647502)
There's nothing in this article that isn't said better elsewhere. I'd recommend the (free, online) Mindfulness in Plain English: http://www.urbandharma.org/udharma4/mpe.html (also available as a "real" book).
Re:Sugar, acid and teeth (2009) on Friday October 12, 2012 @02:03PM (#4646162)
It may be what you consider the "acceptable definition" of fruit juice, but it is not the definition in common use.

Also, you are not evolutionarily adapted to eat compounds. You are evolutionarily adapted to eat foods. And fruit juice is not a food you are evolutionarily adapted to eat. It is very different, biologically, from eating an actual fruit.

We consumers might not like what they do, but I'm sure they know how to maximize profits. Why give shows away for free or a pittance, when people who care are willing to pay dollars per episode? I'm sure they're happy to give away quite a few users to whom an episode is worth a dime or a quarter in online ads, in exchange for getting to keep motivated viewers willing to buy the DVDs at $3 an episode.
Re:Linus Torvalds Answers Your Questions on Thursday October 11, 2012 @08:43PM (#4643445)
Striving, yes. Rather than shoehorning, which is what Linus appears to oppose.
LOL, the URL is: http://prog21.dadgum.com/29.html?repost

That might explain why it's so familiar.

Re:Steve Jobs passed away one year ago - HN Frontpage on Friday October 05, 2012 @10:50AM (#4617105)
So comment threads on HN are now private discussions one has to be invited to?

Like the original commenter I am also tired of the celebrity worship that goes on here (and pretty much everywhere else). Yes, the man died. So do millions of others every day.

Re:An Update from Elon Musk on Thursday October 04, 2012 @10:37PM (#4615436)
I am aware of iter. The proposed claim to be defended is "commercial fusion power by 2040", not "there exists an international experimental project to figure out how to create a fusion reactor with a positive energy balance and an economic durability, neither of which we know how to do yet."
The title, "How Dropbox learned to stop worrying and love the COM" is a reference to the film "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb". The object taking the place of the atomic bomb in the variant title is COM. To me this implies that the article will describe why people worry about COM and why they're wrong. I did not find it to contain either.

Admittedly I have never seen the movie, which wikipedia describes as a "dark comedy satirizing the nuclear scare". I suspect the article doesn't follow along those lines either.

Provocative title for a pretty generic article.

1. Summary of COM, a widely used technology

2. Summary of comtypes, a python package for interacting with COM

3. One example of a gotcha they ran into with comtypes and arrays of COM objects.

Conclusion: meh.

Re:An Update from Elon Musk on Thursday October 04, 2012 @04:34PM (#4614237)
Externalities 50 or 100 years down the road tend to have little influence on economics. Parent strongly predicted commercial fusion in 30 years. That will not happen.
Re:An Update from Elon Musk on Thursday October 04, 2012 @01:50PM (#4613454)
Respectable, but not as good, except for straight line speed, for more money. And I'm saying that as someone who'd love a Tesla Roadster.
