Secret sauce is source control. You can get a matrix switcher and come up with your own controls but smart remotes like URC and Control4 are way more expensive and IMO are less reliable.
Surround speakers need a priority switch if you want matching amp profiles in the home theatre.
I have in ceiling speakers each pair connecting to a sonos amp. Outdoors, in garage, etc. It’s great - for me. I have Play:1s in bathrooms without mics and it can all sync.
Guests can also control it via phone.
What pisses me off:
- Lack of auto firmware updates at night
- Latency with external sources unless you use a sound bar, maybe fixed with port? The connect sucked
- Spotify premium required
- Cost
That’s exactly why I’ll never use them.
You can’t even really get genuine warranty claims addressed. There’s always a catch: labor not included, part in order, no fridge for 4 days until tech can return.
Politics is theatre, I don’t think anything ever gets done. It just gives people a forum to complain and they can feel like they’re making a difference.
Although this appears to be something local so there’s a chance it’s not entirely useless.
I also used 555-1212 etc but I used to shop at Harris Teeter and they flagged me. They knew who I was even when paying cash. I would get them to use the store card on occasion but they were strict and it was at manager discretion.
To sign up for their crappy card they copied your ID, something I’m not ok with.
Uh, what kind of companies are using AI to screen candidates?
2257 record compliance can be done with a custodian.
Beautiful - I’ve been using Intrepid Vehicle Spy for awhile but the cost is hard to justify for a hobbyist.
You’re correct. I should’ve replied to a different thread.
In my experience gettimeofday() as a vsyscall is a substantial performance benefit to PHP web applications.
I read the list and added that in thinking it’s relevant to growing the FreeBSD user base.
I know better, but auto correct on my phone doesn’t. I gave up fighting with it long ago. Latest iOS seems to correct things twice before giving up which really pisses me off!
My fingers are larger than average so it helps more than it hurts, for now.
Bars in places you least expect them can feel like an oasis. I recently discovered many Nordstrom’s have bars, with rather tasty cocktails. I’m happy to oblige the occasional shopping trip now.
I completely agree. It should be a fixed price, incentivizing the driver to take the most efficient route.
I also don’t want my driver to see where I’m going, because not all rides are big fares. Sometimes I must get somewhere close and I don’t want a hassle.
Uber has gotten a lot of bad press lately and I think unfairly so.
What’s worse is Amazon’s gig program. Let’s say your doing jobs like assembling BBQs and Treadmills for customers. They don’t pay trip time to the job, so you can drive 40 miles only to find out half the screws are missing. You must get the customer to request the parts, come back, only to find it’s wrong again.
You take a big hit refusing the job but you have to take all the shitty work to get the chance of a real profitable gig.
Much worse than ride share semantics, IMO.
Anyway - another reason to use Lyft.
Everyone is human. Dehumanizing all work interactions sounds pretty depressing.
I think the real problem is considering conversations in jest as evidence. We should all use key base for gossip but not all of us are technical.
If we were then keybase would be included in regulation.
Can’t win.
Mini splits still need to be cleaned and evaporator coils collect mold/mildew/contaminates just the same.
Regardless of what you have periodic maintenance is what makes a difference.
You have duct board. It can’t be cleaned, only replaced. If you want to spend a lot look at double wall sheet metal ducts and never let your house sit without dehumidification.
It will likely go too far, if something like that ever comes to fruition.
I met with someone from a privacy focused search engine and a line from his deck stuck with me: “you tell your search engine things you wouldn’t tell your friends or spouse”
I think the best thing is to avoid Ring products
Just another PR move by the feds to try and sway public perception to accept intentionally weakening encryption.
Anecdote: My dad did this in the 70s. I believe you’re correct. He was working overseas and was frequently dispatched to countries without modern repair facilities such as Saudi Arabia.
One story that stands out is he asked a local worker to warm up the APU. The worker proceeded to build a fire under the APU, destroying it. What he meant was start it up and let it run until it reaches operating temperature.
It’s a slippery slope, but it’s easy to think that way because it’s personally appealing to you.
What if the policy banned something else - chewing gum, perfume, or eating foods with strong odors? All of those things do bother me but I put up with it because it’s not just about me.
I understand the health implications of being a nicotine user but I’m totally against policies like this.
It’s your body, if you wish to smoke you should not face employment discrimination.
It’s lucrative. I work with URC. It’s more about integration and working around bugs/limitations. Programming isn’t so difficult compared to learning quirks of hardware. Knowing what receiver models work with a broken ARC implementation for example is something you learn on the job.
> Analyzing a dataset of over 1.5 billion individual opioid prescriptions between 2011 and 2018, which were aggregated to the individual provider-year level, we find that recreational and medical cannabis access laws reduce the number of morphine milligram equivalents prescribed each year by 11.8 and 4.2 percent, respectively.
As a former marijuana user this seems obvious to me. I don’t understand why federal legalization has been so difficult. There are many benefits despite the potential of unknown risk.
Maybe my beliefs are a little out there. I wish for all drugs to be decriminalized. Portugal’s model seems to be working quite well.

Audio source is my receiver which does not offer this functionality. You’re right, config management will be painful.
Receiver runs Linux and I did get a shell on it, but to be honest this is something I would rather just pay for. I don’t want to risk bricking it.
My use case for whole home audio is to play audio of a sports game that’s playing on TV in the living room.
500ms of latency is far too much. Even Sonos suffers from this with port/connect
Fun fact: TicketMaster scanners can perform admin functions via QR code, including “testing” the tone that tells the agent your ticket is valid.
I work in software and I’m a high school dropout. I’ve never even been asked if I have a degree, I just leave that field blank.
