News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

sysashi

This might be the most dystopian shit I've read so far, it's disgusting and terrifying.
Re:PostgreSQL 19 Interactive Tour on Monday September 07, 2026 @03:21PM (#49601946)
`on conflict do select` and eager aggregation are the most notable for me, I use upserts and joins like that all the time. Annual postgres upgrades are always exciting (features) and terrifying (ops) :D (not that something can go wrong, I just feel anxiety hehe)
Re:iPhone Pocket: a beautiful way to wear and carry iPhone on Tuesday November 11, 2025 @05:48PM (#45893966)
Thank you, this page is much more informative than default google's definition of this word!
Re:iPhone Pocket: a beautiful way to wear and carry iPhone on Tuesday November 11, 2025 @05:46PM (#45893939)
Thank you! I just searched for "ablative" and ended up on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ablative_case which confused me even more hehe
Re:iPhone Pocket: a beautiful way to wear and carry iPhone on Tuesday November 11, 2025 @04:20PM (#45893035)
I'm not a native speaker, I tried googling and translating and still did not get what "ablative" means. Do you mind explaining like I'm 5 what does it mean please..
Re:Amazon confirms 14,000 job losses in corporate division on Tuesday October 28, 2025 @05:24PM (#45739416)
Apparently they let go some (or all?) of the AGS (amazon game studios) and putting New World (mmorpg game) on maintenance mode. This game currently has around 30-40k concurrent players on steam and probably as much or more on consoles. I feel bad for people got fired and gamers (myself included). I really like that game
Re:Helix Editor Release 25.07 Highlights on Tuesday July 15, 2025 @05:38PM (#44576080)
Been using helix for over a year (mostly Elixir development) after a decade of (neo)vim, very happy so far! My config file is like 10 lines long :D Congrats on the release!
Re:Phoenix.new – The Remote AI Runtime for Phoenix on Friday June 20, 2025 @05:22PM (#44332233)
Why do you need an official SDK to make http calls?
Re:Show HN: Bubbles, a vanilla JavaScript web game on Friday March 14, 2025 @05:20AM (#43360870)
Cool game! at first I thought it's an "aim trainer" of some sorts :D I forgot about everything (slings and bombs) besides clicking and tried to click all the way through.
Re:Phoenix LiveView 1.0.0 is here on Tuesday December 03, 2024 @05:48PM (#42312503)
Hats off to phoenix team! I've been working with Elixir and Phoenix for quite a while, it just brings joy to work with and pretty fun as well :)

Getting to 1.0 of LV is huge and it finally happened!

Next thing is LiveView Native getting support for android and I'm never leaving this ecosystem ever. (at least for web/mobile dev heh)

Re:Lerp on Friday April 07, 2023 @07:51PM (#35488706)
Since I'm not very bright, I tried first example (ball following your mouse) and thought that's cool and very responsive and smooth animation! Then I tried Lerp example...
Re:Bitcoin powers towards $50K as Tesla takes it mainstream on Tuesday February 09, 2021 @02:03PM (#26081287)
Yeah, I thought that people mine Ethereum with GPUs, which is somehow related to BTC in terms of price (I have no idea how tho, I guess people trade ETH for BTC and vice versa)
Re:Bitcoin powers towards $50K as Tesla takes it mainstream on Tuesday February 09, 2021 @09:34AM (#26077913)
It seems I will never afford a GPU to play some games..
Re:10 years-ish of Elixir on Thursday January 14, 2021 @10:55AM (#25777850)
I've picked up Elixir in 2016 and have started freelance work around 2017 doing Elixir and Phoenix exclusively. For me it is the best platform for web development and I'm very grateful to everyone involved (erlang/otp, elixir, ecto, phoenix teams and everyone else).

Happy Birth Day Elixir!

Re:Telegram publishes users' locations online on Monday January 04, 2021 @11:09PM (#25641979)
Do you mind providing examples of "anti features and dark patterns"? Just curious
Re:macOS Big Sur on Friday November 13, 2020 @04:33AM (#25080648)

sad and funny feelings at the same time :)

My old macbook air (2011) is on high sierra, I'm still working on it and it's perfect!

Re:macOS Big Sur on Friday November 13, 2020 @04:31AM (#25080633)
I see, thanks. I don't recall using any 32bit programs recently so perhaps I should give it a try
Re:macOS Big Sur on Thursday November 12, 2020 @04:09PM (#25075086)
I have not even upgraded to Catalina yet, fearing all the breaking stuff I've heard of on HN.

I'm just so frustrated about upgrade process, 90% of the time it won't work first time and will break my Windows partition in some way. Why can't it be like upgrading bunch of packages with `pacman -Syu`...

Re:Why not use GraphQL? on Saturday November 07, 2020 @03:02PM (#25018576)
That makes sense, thanks!
Re:Why not use GraphQL? on Saturday November 07, 2020 @10:02AM (#25015424)
sorry for stupid question, how REST and database indexes are related?
please don't mistake political party with a country
I came to the same conclusion (I use Upwork -> TW -> My local bank, instead of Upwork -> local bank, because even with lower transfer amounts upwork's rate is so bad)

Although I've noticed an increase in fees over the year or so with TW, especially now. Next time I'm withdrawing from upwork I'm gonna compare rate/fees and check whether TW gives me better outcome. (I feel it might be not true anymore)

Re:GitHub for mobile is now available on Wednesday March 18, 2020 @04:02AM (#22614553)
Seems like that, yeah. But again, I believe your issue is related to some non-optimized content for mobile. Perhaps the thing that crashes is syntax highlighting script, whereas on mobile they have something native. (just a guess..)
Re:GitHub for mobile is now available on Tuesday March 17, 2020 @03:30PM (#22609216)
I'm really curious why would you need a special app to view text? Why browser is not sufficient enough for that use?
Re:Simple Systems Have Less Downtime on Wednesday March 04, 2020 @02:09AM (#22481787)
Thanks for the link and explanations, appreciate it!

I've read that page (i linked) inattentively, re-read 3 times that bold text next to the broken link and still asked that question...

Re:Simple Systems Have Less Downtime on Tuesday March 03, 2020 @02:43PM (#22478042)
sorry for offtopic.

there a broken link that I was interested to read on. its on https://www.rsync.net/resources/howto/rsync.html ctrl+f "rsync snapshots are detailed here"

I think given the topic, someone is expected to figure it out on their own (remember linux cake?), but I feel a bit lazy after a work day.. sorry

Re:Let's Encrypt has turned on stricter validation requirements on Wednesday February 19, 2020 @02:18PM (#22368973)
I've also received a notification email about my outdated acme client, thanks!
I've recently made a present for myself on birthday - behringer umc22 + sm 58 mic. previous to that present were m40x headphones.

After using those headphones for couple years, I now see the difference between audio output of a laptop and simple interface like umc22 (which has own DAC + amp as I understand).

I have not found much use for mic yet (guess no one has called me since), besides recording birds outside, and generally having fun with it :D but I definitely love how headphones sound after getting audio interface (or DAC+amp part of it)

Re:Elixir v1.10 on Monday January 27, 2020 @09:56AM (#22159793)
I'm really exited about that pattern-match diffing improvement!

Although finding green and red mismatches in pages of output of your data structure was fun :)

.. no

Thanks for the work on Elixir!
