Because Australia is not in the north Atlantic
There is a very good book that covers it very well: the great post office scandal

Hard to read without boiling your blood

Doesn't need to be November

Germany is dark and windless plenty of the time during summer: ~8 hours a day

I frequently saw our solar and wind usage below even 5% of their respective capacities

Re:The absurdity of Europe burning wood for energy on Sunday September 18, 2022 @01:56AM (#32884802)
Because people want heat and electricity when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing enough (or at all) which happens pretty regularly

If you haven't won the geographic lottery then...

You can burn coal like there is no tomorrow (see Poland)

Or gas (see Germany, and most of Europe for heating), and enable Russia and other undesirables

Or nuclear and have energy security without directly and indirectly causing death and suffering for millions

The heatwaves also affected delivery of coal (:

And even with the heatwaves still more reliable than wind & solar

At least with nationalisation it's not only the losses that are socialized, right?

Fortunately you are being in part subsidised thanks to EDFs profits in other countries :)

You very seriously need to check out news or Twitter from any other Western European country

If what was happening in UK happened in France, Paris would have been burnt to the ground months ago

> but rather that the NUM destroyed the domestic coal industry, which became totally uncompetitive relative to more or less any foreign producers. It wasn't Russia specifically, it was that UK mining became dysfunctional and unreliable.

If you think miners should not be fairly compensated for their work you're free to go work as one for one of those foreign producers that less "dysfunctional" and more "reliable"

> Nuclear isn't going well for France right now. And most of the EU uran comes from Russia

Even not doing well it's better then Germany's wind and solar - it's rare to see Germany electricity polluting going below 4x France - not to mention coal whose transportation is also affected by low water levels

Re:Who killed nuclear energy and how to revive it on Friday August 26, 2022 @05:01PM (#32612721)
Wind and solar aren't baseload
Re:How safe are nuclear power plants? on Thursday August 18, 2022 @12:30AM (#32505290)
If only coal and gas were held to the same standard
And?I I don't believe it's common to elect ministers/department heads anywhere?
Every country works the same way?
It is simply the real democratic leader of each country for lack of a better single phrase because countries that still have monarchies pretend their head of state is their monarch

There is nothing Byzantine about pragmatically accommodating the differences between the political systems of independent states

The alternative would be.... Requiring all states to not call their monarchs heads of state? Removing their monarchies? Having the same political system? Pointless dogmatism

Good thing the sun never stops shining and the wind never stops blowing
Yes, hopefully we have unicorns in the distant future

Today and the immediate future need solutions that we can already build

Thanks to nuclear, France is decades ahead of us in Germany

We barely average 50% green electricity today, at 4x carbon cost of France - and that is before we try to transition heating and transport (cars) to electricity

Skip the hassle, move prod to an NFS share

Rather than signing in and out all the time, why not use Firefox's container tabs?
