I flipped through my Forrest Mims Engineer's Mini-Notebooks so many times the pages almost fell out.

Radioshack catalog archive in case anybody missed it:

Turns out 640K of RAM was enough for anybody after all.
> The 'both sides are the same'

Nowhere in my comments or link does it say that. You're attempting a strawman and failing.

The pandemic is an excellent example of both parties prioritizing capital interests over human interests:

Lots of blood on their hands.

Nobody here is suggesting this.

Voters aren't given meaningful choices. It's just subjective "lesser of two evils" in a race to the bottom (except for elites, who win no matter which fake party is in power).

Democracy is illusory.

Maybe it exacerbated it, but The Office was mostly a documentary of preexisting behavior.

This is a classic breakdown:

Agreed. The linked article touches on that fwiw.

Reddit feels like it's been on the way out since the API fiasco. Lots of users jumped ship and have been replaced with engagement bots.

Bluesky is small and lame.

Mastodon/Lemmy are fragmented fiefdoms.

X/Twitter is full of dark patterns, bots, and invasive of privacy.

Basically everything sucks.

When the underlying economic model of CONSUMPTION = GOOD is viewed as a religion or universal law of nature, it's actually not surprising that people are irrational about this.

Sounds like you need to re-read the article.
Sounds like you need to re-read the article.
NPR has been capital-endorsed garbage for a long time now. NYT is no better.

The Sanders campaigns just made it painfully obvious to anybody paying attention.

lol what primaries?

No.

The original point is that it's exactly what an LLM would do to appear human.

No. I'm in the US and this is a recent phenomenon.

The occasional typo has always existed and is fine. The new trend is a noticeable increase in occurrences.

To me it seems more productive to acknowledge the shortcomings of triangulating whatever few modern media outlets are indeed worthwhile so that a widespread appetite for something better might pave the way for more of those to exist.
> Still, if we could upend at least some of the underlying commercial interest or even the need to rely on advertising, it could be something.

This is some good brainstorming on the matter:

https://www.noemamag.com/the-last-days-of-social-media/

I tend to think the latest models know that "how do I make XYZ more human?" would include making typos. Seems pretty basic.
Why is the prevalence of typos increasing in the past year or so? I don't mean to single you out; your comment was just a convenient example.

Do people (and AI bots) think this makes them seem more human? Or is it yet another symptom of civilization in decline?

> I keep comparing AI versus human coding as the difference between power tools and hand tools.

Or the difference between Guitar Hero and a real guitar

> Nest is a disaster

It truly is, and it's a shame since the hardware build quality was solid.

My gen 3 had a bug where when selecting heat mode from off mode after previously being in cooling mode, it'd pulse the AC briefly before ultimately engaging heat, which is absolutely not what you want to do when it's below safe operating temp for the AC compressor.

It was a really basic thing that would have been quickly patched if owned by a thermostat company, but clearly asking too much when owned by an advertising company.

Never again.

All of this is still going to be constricted by global capital interests.

Same for the average imperialist liberal guzzling NYT as gospel.

The difference between 50% truthiness and 75% truthiness is just not that important, especially when one manufactures consent for the other, and the missing 25% is the most important part.

This way we get to choose our preferred flavor of propaganda
