His actions are definitely of someone who is strongly connected to reality.

(Of particular note: the "Predictions from a stable genius" where he goes truly off the deep end.)

I hope only financial ruin for everyone involved in a crypto mining operation using fossil fuel. For fuck's sake, the world is burning.
Re:Should GitHub be sued for training Copilot on GPL code? on Thursday June 23, 2022 @11:02AM (#31850071)
From the about page:

"Q: Why is nothing from the Windows XP source code leak added?

A: Even though Microsoft has only taken down a few Windows modifications, they will most definitely take Windows XP Delta Edition down if there is a reference to the source code inside it. The Windows XP source code is illegal to download, fork, and redistribute, so nothing from it will ever be added."

Re:GitHub Copilot is generally available on Tuesday June 21, 2022 @12:55PM (#31826228)
Only $10 a month to rack up dozens of license violations? What a deal.
Re:Ask HN: What game do you wish existed? on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @08:33AM (#31503611)
A Hitman-esque stealth hacking game with real VMs running real software would be cool to see.
Re:Teach your kids poker, not chess on Saturday May 21, 2022 @07:32AM (#31456985)
Agreed that Chess is mostly about memorization, even at a high level - opening theory has only gotten deeper with the invention of computer analysis. If you're looking for a game that fits that criteria (deterministic but strategic), Go is probably the answer. The possibility space expands so rapidly due to the size of the board that you just can't have deep memorization beyond a few moves.
It's not exactly the same, but in Japan a few capsule net cafes opened up that sound similar to what you're talking about:

Tesla also fired a union organizer (while tweeting about how they are free to join a union) [0], banned a journalist from buying a Tesla[1], threatened to sue another journalist[2], and tried to destroy the life of a whistleblower[3].

Re:Ask HN: Is there a video game dev alternative to HN? on Monday April 11, 2022 @04:29PM (#30994497)
Retro forums that focus on specific systems (eg, C64 development, NES development, DOS development...) tend to be pretty good as they draw people who are interested in developing for more limited hardware and as such don't mind going deep on technical topics. For more up to date discourse I'm not too sure. Maybe TIGSource forums?
What exactly makes you comment as if woman gaining equality means men have lost something? Surely, in an even society, this is a good headline, unless you're pining for more patriarchal days.
How is this supposed to disrupt Nvidia? Those marketing stats from those slides are really poor. Only 90 fps (what an arbitrary target?) on Fortnite, GTA 5, Rocket League, and Valorant. All of which are older and very well optimised games so I'm not sure 90fps at 1080p is showing anything impressive...
Re:It's always been you, Canvas2D on Friday March 04, 2022 @09:53AM (#30555635)
And then in 2040, people will rediscover gradients and for a while they will be overused. It's just design trends.
Re:Mozilla Hubs on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @11:19AM (#30516065)
This coming less than a month after they killed their (actually useful) VR browser - Firefox Reality - is rather depressing.
Re:I shaved 187MB off United Airlines' 439MB iOS app on Wednesday February 23, 2022 @12:25PM (#30443619)
MS did this with the Xbox 360. Developers just stopped updating their games.
Re:How to Remove the Frustration of Reading in Games on Tuesday February 22, 2022 @11:49AM (#30430177)
The problem is that reading is, in a lot of games, pointless. When it shows you an arrow pointing you to wherever to go next, why bother reading quest text?

Also, frankly, possibly because of the above (ie, it's skipped over by most), writing in games is often very poor.

Re:Ask HN: Why is UI design in Unity so hard? on Sunday February 20, 2022 @04:09PM (#30409286)
As you dive deeper into Unity, you realize more and more flaws. They promise the world, but only deliver marketable features rather than improving what they've got. The UI Framework is just one of those things.

Re:Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes on Saturday February 05, 2022 @08:12AM (#30220668)
There's a big difference between 'having this content on your platform,' and 'paying $100m for exclusive rights.'
Re:The New York Times buys Wordle on Monday January 31, 2022 @05:19PM (#30155483)
What? Even a junior dev could clone Wordle in a day, maybe add a week for polishing the animations and such.
I saw the changes to WoW being described as reeling back from 'the line' because their company culture is so warped they have no idea where 'the line' lies anymore.
People so desperately want a way to objectively rank themselves against each other that they'll believe IQ is a good way to measure intelligence because their ego needs it to be true.
I was thinking this last night, as I searched for where Android Studio installed NDK and was directed to an article that started from how to open Windows Explorer... with a whole bunch of how to troubleshoot opening Windows Explorer to pad the article for adverts.
Would be interested in data before 2020 - is this just a Christmas/Winter trend? The graph only shows a small spike around the first wave. Could actually be just fake sellers on Amazon getting washed into the main supply.
Re:Woke Up to an NFT of Myself on Wednesday December 22, 2021 @08:11PM (#29657575)
This article got me thinking: what would an anti-NFT but still open source license look like? Is that even possible to do?
Not OP but I'm currently writing a game in C: just throw yourself into it. The language itself is minimal enough that you probably won't need much guidance other than looking up library functions and with modern tools like the various sanitizers in clang and valgrind it's hard to go too wrong.
Re:NPM – "is-even", 160k weekly downloads on Tuesday November 16, 2021 @02:33PM (#29245334)
Which is something that can be fixed instantly: simply stop showing download counts on NPM.
Re:Unity is buying Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital for $1.6B on Tuesday November 09, 2021 @06:39PM (#29169057)
I wish they'd focus on fixing the things they've left broken and scattered throughout their engine rather than buying up companies in a space already absolutely dominated by their direct competitor.
Re:Ask Delphi on Tuesday October 26, 2021 @10:09AM (#29000600)
> Q: Is it true that Delphi is learning moral judgments from Reddit?

> A: No. Delphi is learning moral judgments from people who are carefully qualified on MTurk. Only the situations used in questions are harvested from Reddit, as it is a great source of ethically questionable situations.

MTurk is pretty worthless in these kind of situations. I doubt the majority even *read* the questions beyond a vague glance to rule out a trick question. It's also biasing answers towards cultures that

a) are primarily in places that MTurk pays out

b) are primarily in places where the cost of living is low enough that MTurk can provide a job.

Kudos to them. I remember reading a report from a game dev a few years ago that said basically the same thing and came to the conclusion, "... and that's why we're ending our Linux support," which utterly baffled me.
