kalshi and polymarket are quite obvious gambling sites. any pedantic arguments to the contrary are strictly financial chaff to enhance their operating margins until the regulations finally catch up.

they were never an innovating marketing play... it was the culmination of a gambling company committing to regulatory capture as evinced by Donald Trump Jr (totally not) sitting on BOTH BOARDS as a "paid strategic advisor" or whatever lie they want to spin.

in the game, the success is guaranteed. Time in = gold out.

IRL, success is NOT guaranteed. time in does not necessarily yield additional income.

in the former case, the reward pathway in the brain is satisfied, so why risk it?

Re:Compile-Time Dependent Types on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:54AM (#50305738)
I wonder how well LTO optimizes for these sorts of things, vs doing all of the legwork to compile-time resolve polymorphic functions and objects.
Re:The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:28PM (#50279508)
Not really. American Corporations have successfully changed the culture to a point where asking about salary is considered a flaw to the worker. It somehow demonstrates a lack of loyalty.

Things are getting better, but HR still routinely preaches that you should never share your salary with anyone else. A lot of times they infer you will be fired for it.

Salary negotiations are sort of constrained to cost of annual living increases, or promotions. outside of that, you are not expected to ever talk about salary. ever.

ehh... social media is a net negative on suicide rates (meaning more suicides). It would not be hard to argue social media enables deaths.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:05PM (#50276838)
without a doubt someone made a lot of money by arguing against the regulations required to prevent this.

we need to eliminate profit-based motives for safety critical areas.

i would intentionally drag my old crt tv to rock band sessions in college because it had zero latency compared to the lcd flatscreen in the commons area.

good times...

As i sit here listening to the diablo 2 soundtrack while working (lol), i dont recall a ton of D2 issues... Most of the time the problem was my dial-up connection.
the russian servers must be back online
they were doing far more than propping up twitter. they were also doing tons of engineering on the side like bootstrap, and shaping fundamental internet technologies.

Musk, in traditional private equity ways, killed anything that wasnt immediately making money. Then he made it pay to play and monetized the hell out of it. All of that BEFORE he opened the far-right floodgates.

Now its a shell of its former self and coasting on the momentum it once enjoyed.

Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:20AM (#50245305)
there's a difference between using a tv as a response to bad behavior, and using a tv as a social event to build familial bonds.

youre gonna have a hard time convincing me that rugrats and bluey are a negative impact on development.

that said, tv for a 0-1 does feel icky. like i wouldnt recommend tossing them in a bouncer in front of a tv for hours.

Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:31AM (#50196810)
keep it simple. They promised a door key with 10 grooves cut in it, but instead they gave you a door key with 1 groove cut in it.

And when that clicks, extend the metaphor, literally, to a key with ~384 grooves.

im gonna have a real hard time believing enron executives were innocent
prosecutors measure success by conviction rates. they cant have a dismissed case bringing down their averages
Its more like every byte should have entropy in it. When you limit yourself to a single byte of entropy, you only have one byte of possibilities to guess (256 possibilities), when you should have had 384 bits of entropy, now you only have.... 8

Its the range that changes.

you can either try and guess the key from

range(0, 255) (which is easy!)

or

range(0, 39402006196394479212279040100143613805079739270465446667948293404245721771496870329047266088258938001861606973112319)

(it exceeds the heat death of the universe)

break it up? no. it just made the oil heavy enough to sink. it's all still there, just at the bottom of the ocean now
The Deepwater disaster recovery very effectively demonstrated the phenomenon of "out of sight out of mind". they dumped almost 2 million gallons of "dispersants" on the oil spill... which was DESIGNED to make the oil heavier than water and sink to the sea bed. it never dissolved anything, it just hid the problem from the public. and all that oil is just sitting on the sea bed.
im expecting that an LLM will arise out of this that is about as unbiased as is electrically possible, and will become the wikipedia of llm's.
trust them, yet.... it seems like legal is an area where LLM's should dominate. its text based, and there's mountains of legal texts to digest. everything has to be written down by default, where's the bad fit?

That the laws are subject to human interpretation? That just sounds like a flaw to me. When objective machines are judging the law without human bias, it sounds a lot fairer to me.

Imagine a justice system thats not swayed by the amount of dollars a top-dollar law firm can drown the little guy in, or how much taxes would be recovered from white collar tax cheats because right now it costs "too much" to audit them.

i too love the idea of deep government inspection of every piece of data i send
I love writing that uses acronyms and never defines them.
Re:How the Military Will Hack the Election on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:21PM (#50093470)
bias does not imply incorrect or factually inaccurate. "trump assassinated world leaders and triggered a full blown war in iran" is not bias. its factually accurate. That it breaks with someones worldview is not bias. And we need to stop pretending that adhering to objectivity is "bias".

By that definition, all medical science is "biased". And until the current administration, it wasnt. Requiring people making claims to demonstrate it with repeatable methods is not "bias".

its wild to me how much power aipac wields.... my house of rep in rural maryland was like "palestine has no right to exist"... like why tf does this guy give a hoot?
Republicans cry "muh first amendment" whenever they can, and then buy entire news stations to censor the writers and editors.

Fascism in plain sight.

Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:42PM (#50076584)
what he really meant to say is a desire for a caste system that he sits on the top of. its nothing new. a tale as old as time.
how his supporters genuinely believe he is ridding the government of corruption is a contradiction so plain and bare that it begs a psychological study.

It's amazing what a little bit of propaganda can do to a system of government.

But seriously, we need docker for models like years ago. I dont want these things running with the ability to run rm -rf /

because the american workers are off working on better opportunities afforded to them because the immigrants are working these service jobs.

And now that there's less of them, the jobs will be replaced by higher wage americans, which will increase inflation from the higher payroll costs.
