Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Sunday September 13, 2026 @05:30AM (#49681884)
like the AC/DC current wars when Edison tried to scare people into adopting DC instead of AC.
Re:The Hugging Face incident and the road ahead on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @04:28PM (#49455395)
are people not realizing that they are exaggerating this to:

1. get publicity 2. push for regulation so that no one else is allowed to do this kind of research apart from the pre-approved big corps

it makes for a good story but I don't see what the big deal is. they left some code running and it brute forced hacked something. with enough compute you can brute force anything; isn't that common knowledge?

it's not going to "cost" billions. those are billions they were not entitled to in the first place
that’s some mental gymnastics. so newspapers are free to publish opinions, it is in their business interest………………(but only if the opinion is the one I want otherwise it is not good business)
just the tip of the iceberg. if you think about it, maybe the kernel that runs everything in the world shouldn't be controlled by a single edgy dude.
Re:UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius on Friday October 04, 2024 @01:51AM (#41738241)
bad deal for Mauritius. they didn’t gain any sovereignty, they lost some. why? because now the foreign military base is officially on Maritius soil. so US now has a base in Mauritius just like they have in Japan and other places and those places can’t do anything about it
Re:Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election on Thursday August 01, 2024 @01:31AM (#41126431)
misleading article, pretending this is some kind of scientific evidence of fraud without mentioning other possible explanations.

the most likely and obvious explanation is that there was a mistake in the final report not in the raw data. they just rounded the percentages first and gave them to someone who then made the report with the number of votes based on that.

you can’t really distinguish a mistake from fraud in this case. and then they will fix the mistake and people will say “aha we caught them and now they try to hide it”

Re:Crowdstrike Outage Causing Widespread Issues on Friday July 19, 2024 @05:50PM (#41011746)
need to play bee gees on windows media player
spoiler: crowdstrike is used by companies running on mac and linux as well
when people say AI will cure cancer they mean AI will find some novel idea that no-one tought about. the article is more about how AI will fail at medical practice.
Re:Microsoft bets on Germany in 3.2B euro AI push on Saturday February 17, 2024 @07:29AM (#39408845)
hard to understand what exactly they are investing in. just building a data center to suck up the green energy is not such a great deal for germany
Re:U.S. winning world economic war on Saturday February 03, 2024 @06:06AM (#39239243)
it's kind of obvious. the closer we are to a world war, the better US will do because it's the safest place to invest. who is going to invest in china when US is pumping weapons into taiwan. seems more or less the same blueprint as with ukraine. if war starts, your investment in china is worth 0.
extremely likely. it was an attack with 1 drone right? normally they would send a swarm
officially, ukraine could not use them on their own. only russia had the "launch codes". part of the reason why they gave them up in the first place. not sure how much of a problem that is in practice. in any case, ukraine would have also needed the resources to maintain them which is no easy task. so I guess the answer is: we'll never know if it had any impact.
Re:$10M AI Mathematical Olympiad Prize on Monday November 27, 2023 @06:39PM (#38440157)
not sure there is much point to this. currently no model is even at the level of primary school math. it will take decades until it can win a gold medal in maths. it won't happen overnight. it will happen slowly. will they still give out the prize in 20 years from now, when it won't seem like such a breakthrough?
Re:Tesla sues Swedish state agency over number plate blockage on Monday November 27, 2023 @06:32PM (#38440079)
> (translated) They approve the interim request. They say that the Swedish Transport Agency must give consent for Tesla to pick up the license plates from the manufacturer of license plates.

they will not be delivered. Tesla was allowed to pick them up.

> and just continue developing it and produce a new MS-ChatGPT based on it

"just" push the state of the art. unlikely, even if they have access to everything. they need the people and even then it's unlikely.

Re:OpenAI Investors Try to Get Altman Back: WSJ on Sunday November 19, 2023 @01:21AM (#38329706)
at this point returning would make the situation worse. better a completely fresh start if openai is to have a future.
is the battery not sealed? what if a random splash gets in? battery is positioned quite low
sounds like this is not the case, at least for tesla?
what is the max puddle depth for a tesla?
Re:Nobel Prize Chemistry 2023 on Wednesday October 04, 2023 @06:54PM (#37772847)
> quantum dots are semiconductor particles a few nanometres in size, having optical and electronic properties that differ from those of larger particles as a result of quantum mechanical effects (wikipedia)

why chemistry and not physics? how do they draw the line?

ueah bur his reason was that allowing the attack would have triggered a russian response with even more deaths. musk thought the response would be nuclear and then ww3 but most likely would have been some rocket attack in a cafe, etc. like few days ago.

avoiding escalation seems like a sensible thing at this point as it’s clear neither side can easily win.

Re:YC offers early interviews for AI companies on Saturday July 15, 2023 @04:31PM (#36740668)
the new generation LLM are just better Siri/Alexa. why such hype about them
this is about the ad business not gmail etc. monopolies are not a good thing that’s why we have these laws in the first place. monopolies prevent innovation for example. in the ads case monopoly means 1 company decides what ads are good and what ads are not good which affects society
the world holds its breath. what will the US do? let USD crash and take global economy down? or siphon a bit of wealth from everyone and keep things running for a little longer. obviously they'll chose option 2, as always, but it needs to appear as if this was done only as last resort, after careful consideration.
how is that a replica? it's just another book with the same title? the chosen title "Automating DevOps with GitLab CI/CD Pipelines" is so dull that I'm not surprised it was generated by the AI as well, probably not even the latest tech for that. I'd expect ChatGPT to come up with a better title
Re:The Bitcoin whitepaper is hidden in every copy of macOS on Thursday April 06, 2023 @08:50AM (#35467663)
I bet it was Satoshi who put this in MacOS. it would make sense if Satoshi was the kind of person to hide in plain sight and leave small traces to find him/her.
stabbing is quite common in some big european cities. that’s because guns are hard to find
don’t expect any objectivity fro western MSM when it comes to russi, china, etc. only Reuters seems to make an effort to stick to the facts.
