I recently pivoted to Rust for the backend development, after getting tired of the nodejs ecosystem fragmentation and how fragile things feel. Bun seems very interesting since it allows you to do so many things without pulling in 3rd party libraries and bundlers? Is anybody using it instead of nodejs? how's the experience so far? I might have to give it a try.
Yes, I know there's probably better options than Rust for building APIs, but I wanted to learn it, so why not?
how's Dart for back end development? is anybody using it to build APIs? the syntax doesn't look too bad
In the last few days I've heard this same claim regarding other languages like Gleam and Rust for one reason or another that I don't know who to believe.
I got laid off recently and finally decided to dedicate some time to learn Rust, I started to work on an an idea I've head for a while, to create a game server to play Thai chess inspired by lichess.org, in fact, I plan to use several of their assets.
I'll use Rust for the backend even though it's probably an over kill, but it's the best way to learn for me, doing something with the language. I have some of the front end move logic and board done, I plan to start working on the API soon, after I finish a Rust book I'm reading. Here's some of the code if anybody is interested: https://github.com/thaichess-org.

I myself am spending a lot of time leveling up, I recently realized there are so many things about programming and CS that I don't know about or only have a superficial knowledge. There's so much to learn but it's very rewarding.
if you had started the guide on the first time it was posted, you'd be done by now!
why are governments always trying to find something to fuck over the working class?

as a back end guy, UI is a savior when it comes to UI, it's not perfect but it's much better than what I can code on my own.
if it's a device provided by your company, it's very likely it'll have some spyware on it.
I got a very similar email too.

thanks, will watch it later
roc lang looks very interesting, I see they use a lot of Zig and Rust, very unusual combo I think.
I also can't wait for the day I retire, I got laid off recently, so that sets things back for me for now, but as soon as I get another job, it's all about saving to escape this damn rat race. I hope you can retire soon too.
if you're in the US, ACA is an option, but it'll be expensive if you don't qualify for any subsidies.
what's a big project built with D? I feel it gets mentioned a lot on hackernews but I've never run into any project using it in the wild.
Elixir is missing static types though, it's hard to go back to work on dynamic languages.
maybe it's dumb question, but how do you feed the results of one agent to another? do you copy and paste manually? or how do you do it programmatically?
you're trying to rewrite history here, Microsoft used to be a well known linux hater, but linux became popular and they had no choice but to accept it. Remember the "linux is cancer" years...
it seems Zig is gaining a lot of momentum, I've never coded in it but it seems like a very interesting language. I hope it succeeds.
I live in the USA so I don't have the choice to just leave, at least not now. So I must do what I can to make this country better.
Many european, asian and african countries benefited handsomely from exploiting other human beings and many of these countries have better environmental protection laws. So I don't think this is the reason.
Elections have consequences, many people say both sides are the same, but there's one side that constantly does things like this, on top of giving tax cuts to rich people that need it the least. Please go vote on 2028 if you don't want more of this.
lichess, it's one of my favorite open source projects.
I agree with this article, but with one caveat. Don't be the guy that becomes the designated INSERT_OLD_TECH_HERE guy in the office while the rest of the team is working with the cool modern tech that has a lot of jobs in the market, don't pigeon your career by becoming an expert in legacy tech, like COBOL, RPGLE or FORTRAN. You'll find yourself in a position where you'll get fired and won't be able to find another job because there aren't many jobs for your skills and because companies only want to hire people with years of experience in the tech they're using, be it javascript, java, go etc.
And also these legacy techs don't pay that much in general, for every consultant making bank fixing COBOL bugs there are probably dozens or more COBOL developer making less than a javascript developer, so you'll find yourself making less money than a kid with a 3 years of experience in web development, and when you go out in the market trying to switch jobs, you'll have a hard time finding a new job or salaries will suck. Don't be stupid and become the fall guy to keep the legacy debt going while everybody else in the company is learning the in-demand cool stuff and padding their resumes with hire able skills. You will regret it.
how's the team liking using go so far? any pain points?
how would you get started learning these things? I've always wanted to do something like this but I don't know what begin with
