The people's responses to the comment are telling. The Kickstarter said he'd make a potato salad. He probably has. He asked, and people gave, why do people rage about this? It just so happened that lots of people thought it was funny / wanted to give money / whatever. Who cares? The proverbial you could have thought of it too.

I don't understand the stink people have over this :/

managing one's speed so as not to get pulled over for speeding?
Re:SF cracks down on ‘Monkey Parking’ mobile app on Monday June 23, 2014 @04:20PM (#7934362)
That ... doesn't seem that expensive to me, coming from someone that lives in Seattle. Then again, I tend to get the day rates, or the late-night rates, which, if memory serves me, are like $15 for the night, while only staying an hour or two for dinner.
Re:SF cracks down on ‘Monkey Parking’ mobile app on Monday June 23, 2014 @02:33PM (#7933578)
You wouldn't :) but, it can be hard to find a parking spot in, for example, Seattle on a Friday night.
Re:SF cracks down on ‘Monkey Parking’ mobile app on Monday June 23, 2014 @02:24PM (#7933498)
"MonkeyParking and any motorists using the app face fines of $300 per violation of the city’s law prohibiting selling or contracting for parts of a public street, according to the city attorney."

I was going to ask what the actual law was, but it seems I've found some version of the gist of it here. Where I live (not San Fransisco) we have privatized parking in plots of land that aren't on the public street. Would using this app on places like that in SF be legal?

Re:Pierre Sprey on the F-35 [video] on Wednesday June 18, 2014 @06:33PM (#7913335)
Wow.

And in reference to your previous comment, if a drone pilot makes a mistake, we lose money, not lives. Another advantage of the drones.

Why does the airforce hate the A-10? That thing is terrifying.

Could you post a link to that YouTube video? sounds awesome.
Re:Show HN: We put an iPhone on the front wheel of a car on Tuesday June 17, 2014 @01:39PM (#7905765)
614 revolutions per minute on the tire, assuming a 17" wheel, is still pretty impressive.
Re:Uber sign-ups soar by 850 percent as cab drivers protest on Thursday June 12, 2014 @12:08PM (#7884207)
While I understand the intent here, do taxi drivers get checked against the potential for a stroke? That could happen to either side.
Re:Uber sign-ups soar by 850 percent as cab drivers protest on Thursday June 12, 2014 @12:01PM (#7884157)
Then tax Uber in a special way?
Re:The Dogs That Sniff Out Land Mines on Wednesday June 11, 2014 @05:35PM (#7880581)
Indeed, and it's awesome. It's just impressive that we can detect that odor better with dogs than with some sort of engineered odor detector
Re:The Dogs That Sniff Out Land Mines on Wednesday June 11, 2014 @03:01PM (#7879785)
There's a lot of really cool information here, especially for animal lovers. From the technical side of things, though, one part stood out: the dogs are more effective at finding mines? That's not something I exactly expected; though I suppose it makes sense. Dogs and their nose, like humans and their eyes are great pattern matchers. Humans are great at seeing and recognizing faces, and specific faces to a degree, better than humans, at least historically (we have put a lot of research into face recognition). I suppose the reason that dogs are so good at this is a similar reason.

There are definitely advantages to being completely wireless, building permits being one of them.
Re:The URL shortener situation is out of control on Monday June 02, 2014 @06:21PM (#7836867)
My guess would be for analytics, so it knows how its own service is being used and who is accessing websites through it. It comes with a convenient feature that bad URLs can be taken down on its site.
Re:You shouldn’t use a spreadsheet for important work on Tuesday May 27, 2014 @10:00PM (#7807984)
For you and the way you think. Don't forget the non-programmer mind.
I think an important question to be answered now is "which is less hygiene"? There have been a few one-offs of people that forewent not showers, but soap in the showers, in preference of scrubbing themselves, but not using modern cleaners. Them doing that was probably a much slower version of what was happening in this experiment's case.

It didn't go into details; but, if the flora and fauna on our bodies actually protect us from the bacteria that is bad for us, then it is beneficial to have a layer of it. If instead, we're just carrying around animals that just happen to be there and don't do anything, then it may be a moot point. That said, if it is beneficial, then the population is actually less healthy for not having the layer; and if we had the layer, we'd get sick less often and be in less danger.

hygiene and rubbing chemicals all over yourself, while certainly related, aren't the same thing

Re:AT&T to Buy DirecTV for $48.5 Billion on Sunday May 18, 2014 @06:45PM (#7764714)
I honestly didn't perceive it as "free as in freedom" in the above context.

That said, roads aren't that, either. Try driving on one without a license, insurance, using them in ways that are disapproved of / disallowed (speeding heavily, drinking and driving, etc) to see. Alternatively, use the road to play a game of football. I don't really think they're "free as in freedom", either.

Re:AT&T to Buy DirecTV for $48.5 Billion on Sunday May 18, 2014 @06:29PM (#7764666)
Roads aren't free, we pay for them in taxes and tolls.
Re:Simple Design is What You Need, Not What You Want on Tuesday May 13, 2014 @06:40PM (#7741081)
Did you just turn on NoScript? Usually, when someone turns on NoScript for the first time, they need to go about enabling and disabling a standard set of websites' use of JS. I wish there were automatic whitelists for this sort of thing, but I haven't seen any yet. While not all, many of those are actually useful for presenting the content. Probably 9 are required to view the page properly and allow for the website to manage their website. The others are common social media you would want, and only like 6 are purely for the ads.
Re:You get what you pay for. on Thursday May 08, 2014 @05:38PM (#7717865)
I know people that survive on just above minimum wage and even pay for their own housing. They almost always make rent, but until they both started working, it was very, very close. I'm actually surprised that they can survive. They don't eat very often or well... or didn't. I think that's improved since both of them are working now; but... yes.

But yes, I know a person. He has full time, surprisingly, but he refused health care BECAUSE he wouldn't be able to survive, and he is making more than minimum wage.

Re:You get what you pay for. on Thursday May 08, 2014 @03:51PM (#7717283)
Depends on the location. Software devs aren't as highly loved in places that aren't The Valley and other tech hubs
Re:New Soylent Website on Tuesday May 06, 2014 @04:21PM (#7706852)
Feeling full is a hugely important part of this. I'd be interested in that part as well.
Re:New Soylent Website on Tuesday May 06, 2014 @02:09PM (#7706122)
I haven't tried Soylent; but, its price range and ease of use is making me start to consider it for nights / weekend times that I'm not working and don't feel like going out to eat.

How does it taste? Do you still feel hungry after eating it? And, is there a way to supplement it with other foods, like ... 2/3rds a regular portion + oatmeal, or something? Or maybe flavoring like those syrup pump bottles?

Re:Why Sweden has so few road deaths on Monday May 05, 2014 @08:21PM (#7702166)
It looks like that's lower in Sweden, too, but the comments give more of a suggestion of that, not a direct statement.
Re:Why Sweden has so few road deaths on Monday May 05, 2014 @07:24PM (#7701934)
Interesting that the comments on the article make some good points, including that the UK has about the same / a better deaths per capita than Sweden, despite it being the exact opposite type of road environment

[edit: clarified wording some]

Re:Police use new tool to source crowds for evidence on Friday May 02, 2014 @02:25PM (#7687273)
This link doesn't work for me. I'm taken to AP's "pick where you live" page :/
This should be qualified with: since they already have it via credit card companies. You give your social security number when getting a credit card for a /lot/ of reasons. And these tend to be a good reasons.
Re:Driver caught using cell phone jamming device on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @08:58PM (#7677530)
In the United States, and especially certain states. Poor driver's ed isn't a global problem.
Re:Driver caught using cell phone jamming device on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @08:54PM (#7677512)
That would make sense, too. In my own driving experience, most of the people that ride with me in the car in the front seat are of the mind "We're looking at the road", not "the driver is looking at the road, so I don't have to" as their general attitude; and when I've been under the weather, driving poorly, they've been the first to comment and require a fix to it.

As for the phone, they're also the hands that will affect my phone if we need to change settings on GPS or music or whatever, because they understand the safety precautions.

So, what you say makes sense at least anecdotally and mentally.
