Re:Basics of Proofs [pdf] on Saturday June 17, 2023 @05:07PM (#36374611)
Formal logic is taught in Mathematical Logic class (intermediate, optional) or Discrete math (intro/intermediate, often not taken)

Geometry class in high school sometimes teaches some of it.

Computer science Binary logic teaches some of (De Morgan's laws)

Outside of New Math of the 1970s, it is a glaring omission from the curriculum.

Even enriched classes like Art of Problem Solving that put heavy emphasis on proofs, do not teach formal logic.

Implemented addition via:

      cos(wx) sin (wy) + sin(wx) cos(wy)

But how did it compute that intermediate addition?

I suggest you reread the OP and ask questions, because you seem to have overlooked some of the ideas explained therein, such as transfinite ordinals.
Re:The Lab Leak Hypothesis on Monday January 04, 2021 @09:05PM (#25641158)
Your China article is from 2004. China's regime's ability to control media and its residents is stronger now than then, and the people in charge are more insecure and defensive. That may be enough to explain the change in PR strategy.

Alternatively, past leaks simply weren't bad enough to embarrass the State and could be blamed on local officials. This one got so big so fast that a more defensive posture was required.

Nature.com says:

> Editors’ note, March 2020: We are aware that this story is being used as the basis for unverified theories that the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 was engineered. There is no evidence that this is true; scientists believe that an animal is the most likely source of the coronavirus.

which seems to be unscientific editorializing. There is some evidence, as presented in the OP for example, and there is "no evidence" for any other origin theory either. And the Chinese government in Wuhan showed from the start with Li Wenliang's experience, that any evidence that pointed to imperfect competence in Wuhan would be destroyed by the totalitarian government.

Re:Why can’t you buy a good webcam? on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @11:11AM (#25507709)
What's one such phone?

I've never seen a <$300 Moto phone match a $100 Logitech webcam.

Netflix is draining of quality content and people still pirate memberships. Not a good example.

If Netflix was working so well, all those other services wouldn't exist, because they'd have no customers.

You undermine your own argument by saying

> Piracy is not a price problem, it's a service problem

and then say

> for free.

It's just circular logic to fallaciously justify itself. "criminal organization" == "Any group of >1 person who breaks this law". The term isn't in the text of the law itself.
All you have to do is not make copies of content the creators don't want to give to you.

It costs you nothing to not infringe.

Do you also want to live in a society without personal property? Can I come to your home to borrow anything you aren't using at the moment?

> personally instigating legal action on millions of others

how so?

The vast majority of content creators disagree.
"someone else's" is a view of property rights that not all hold.

"profiteering" (vs just covering costs) assumes facts not in evidence.

This is an alternate angle, which allows prosecution without trying to count how many copies were streamed.
Re:Fuzzy logic rice cookers (2016) on Monday December 21, 2020 @06:37PM (#25501090)
Is every program with variables a "fuzzy logic" program?

Is my thermostat a fuzzy-logic air conditioner?

> I honestly think migration out of cities will not make areas more blue, but will generally increase the conservative population in the US.

It's most likely that both will happen, thanks to Simpsons paradox: The area with immigration shifts toward the newcomers (since they aren't going to be MORE provincial than the natives, even if they partly convert), while also shifting the political power from the urban emigration are to the immigration area.

San Francisco population decimated -- succinct, correct, but sounds shocking.

It's essentially impossible to avoid eating sufficient essential amino acids
Re:McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu on Monday November 09, 2020 @07:30PM (#25041651)
In a nation where most people have an extreme caloric surplus, "processing", aka "cooking" increases the caloric intake of diners. Processing usually removes fiber also.
Re:McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu on Monday November 09, 2020 @07:27PM (#25041626)
That's only for the cheap fake cheese, not a good cashew cheese.

What's nice about cashew cheese is that it won't make you sick as quickly as a dairy cheese pizza will, which despite it's good taste charged a hefty tax afterward.

Re:McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu on Monday November 09, 2020 @07:26PM (#25041616)
As someone who has eaten McDonald's hamburger, no, it's not, it's an abomination. Just make a veggie/vegan burger instead...

In other woods, it's a matter of quality of ingredients and preparation.

Re:McDonald's is adding plant-based burgers to the menu on Monday November 09, 2020 @07:22PM (#25041595)
"Vegans" aren't who really want burgers. Newbie vegans who have been indoctrinated by a lifetime burger culture.

Burgers aren't a huge deal in Asia, for example.

That's what I wrote.

NIST seems a bad home for pseudoscientists.

Richwine's proposal is specifically intended to displace the privilege-bias baked into measures of educational attainment.

Canada doesn't have anything like a President. The Prime Minister is chosen the way the US chooses the Speaker of the House. That's far far more important than the details of the administration of voting.
> start voting 1 month before the actual election day,

Letting people vote is the foundation of democracy.

> votes can be counted and communicated

Where does this happen?

> absolutely no polls/estimations/etc communicated in the media during the last 48 hours before the election day.

For what benefit?

Flagged for trolling. US is holding 50 independent elections during a pandemic. Refusing to let a central authority count all the votes is a feature, not a bug.

What do you mean? The code is on the build server. You only need to push your human-timescale changes.

20% faster CPU isn't going to solve your problem. You should look into caching and distributed compilation.

The biggest companies in the world writing the largest software don't have build times that slow.
