I'm curious what those three things are b/c I am probably just being a Luddite
Re:Drupal is now light-years ahead of its reputation on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:53PM (#50159991)
Not a best reason, but the reason is often because, in the enterprise, marketing hired dozens of people between 2018 and 2023 from the same handful of Drupal consultancies.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:22AM (#50073160)
The video that purports to depict how this device would be used is not an advertisement as much as a warning of how mad things can get. Any curiosity I had about this product has been eradicated from my mind.
I’m genuinely curious how you use image models for this type of design. I need a way for my wife and I to visualize a remodel project and don’t know where to start or which tools are best for the job.
I basically don’t care and until recently I had no reason to. My house has no AC and I heat with wood.

But now I need a way to monitor the status of a system I’m using to prevent a water line from freezing, and suddenly all this home automation stuff seems very useful.

The algorithm giveth, and the algorithm keepeth away.

Before I clicked that link I had never heard of Breaking Points, a political series with over 2MM subscribers. I'm a YT premium subscriber and watch a ton of political stuff, much of it damn similar to what that channel produces.

Re:Apple Pass Designer on Friday October 02, 2026 @03:49PM (#49937773)
I found out the expensive way this year that you cannot even give someone a TicketMaster ticket. A ticket is app-based, and bound to your TicketMaster account and the only conceivable way to share it would be to give someone else your account credentials, which is stymied by the app's SMS based 2FA.

I will never give that company another dime, I don't care if John Lennon is reanimated and launches a comedy tour.

My experience as well. GLP-1 removed the spark that alcohol has always given off when it hit my bloodstream. As a lifelong over-drinker, it was incredible to have a few sips of a martini and basically think 'meh, whatever'.
Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @12:29PM (#49896035)
Parent of an elementary school child in a rural area. People host holiday and birthday parties, but nobody in our extended circle hosts dinner parties. FFS who has time with two working parents and kids who are involved in a lot of activities? Weekdays we barely squeeze in a meal, and weekends are booked.

My parents hosted many dinner and hors d’oeuvre parties, because my mother didn't work outside the home and was available to shoulder all that organization and work.

We all have favorites, but that's not the point WZ was making.

The whole USP for emdash is sandboxed plugins. Sandboxed plugins only work in Cloudflare.
Re:Muse: Meta's personal AI agent, features and capabilities on Thursday September 10, 2026 @12:44PM (#49646664)
First of all, the average parent is definitely doing some volunteering, at least in the US. From rec sports to scouts to church stuff to local committees, it's very rare for someone to be totally checked-out on all those counts.

And as a bit of anectata: I play two sports and my child plays multiple. Every single one of those groups or teams relies on email, even when other modes of communication are layered on.

A CMS that can only run on one hosting provider?
Re:Muse: Meta's personal AI agent, features and capabilities on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @05:45PM (#49617554)
I can only imagine you have no kids, serve on no boards, do not volunteer, and play no sports.

2003 was my high-water mark.
Re:The Largest Electric Aircraft Just Flew [video] on Thursday September 03, 2026 @06:08PM (#49557812)
I'm not sure I get the 'appreciating asset' point he makes in the video. How will the plane perform better in 10 years?

Cool stuff regardless!

Re:Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal on Friday August 28, 2026 @07:12AM (#49476974)
In 1995 I could give anyone in Germany my PostBank konto number and they could “wire” me money by calling the bank.

In 2026 I pay contractors working on my US house by logging into my bank and instructing it to mail a paper check.

The only exception is Venmo which everyone expects will be enshittified.

Re:Being Ambitious and Being a Dad on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @07:00PM (#49354033)
I’m far less ambitious, but not less driven. It’s just that what I’m driving for is to maximize time doing things I and my family enjoy. In fact it’s a lens through which I analyze jobs and career opportunities.
Re:Beware Management Consultants on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @06:49PM (#49353924)
You have to think of it like the nutritional supplements industry. They make mountains of money because people have certain misgivings or insecurities or unrealistic goals (or all of these things) with regard to their health. Would life go on just fine without the entire supplements industry? Sure. But that wouldn’t do anything to assuage the health concerns that people perceive themselves to have.

The same is true of the consulting industry. Because companies _also_ have certain misgivings or insecurities or unrealistic goals with regard to their health.

On a date, I once showed a woman I wanted to impress my Palm Pilot. Not only was she utterly unimpressed, she went on to marry an A-list Hollywood celebrity.
Re:How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @03:07PM (#49262988)
Not only jobs, but NYC apartments - although in the Voice not the Times.
Re:Atomarine: Nuclear Data Centers at Sea on Thursday July 30, 2026 @06:09PM (#49116514)
I think you left off figuring out how to connect a floating data center to the internet without making that aspect as expensive as powering the thing in the first place.
Re:Bring Back Crappy Forums on Thursday July 02, 2026 @09:35AM (#48761401)
The forums I keep an eye on have been bought by aggregators who redesign them for maximum ad-suck.

It’s a shame bc very old threads contain massively valuable information and conversation on topics I care about.

One of the best forums moved to a Google Group long ago and that’s maybe the best bad outcome.

Re:Ask HN: Who is quitting? (July 2026) on Thursday July 02, 2026 @09:30AM (#48761312)
I’ve applied for several jobs outside of tech or only tech-adjacent. I’m not happy to give up significant income and benefits, but you don’t get everything you want.

What AI-first means for companies who are not actually AI companies is elevating staff with the right degree of _partiinost_ around AI and using vendor AI products to show how many Jira issues have been closed in pursuit of the latest exciting and important new transformation.

Re:Cigarettes on Monday June 29, 2026 @11:46AM (#48720811)
Dangerous, addictive drugs played a role in me meeting my wife. Do I wish the same for my children? No.
Re:Europe's resistance to AC is driving it insane on Monday June 29, 2026 @11:43AM (#48720775)
I can relate to a certain type of reluctance, in that I live in a part of the US that has never needed air conditioning. I don't look forward to the hassle and expense of installing a heat pump. I don't look forward to the cost of running one. And I won't like resigning to the fact that the summers I've experienced my whole life, as did my ancestors, are over forever.

Of course when it's regularly in the upper 80sF / 30C I will give in. I just empathize.

The two matches for my name are hallucinated athletes. For now.
It’s the opposite of obscure - it’s commonplace. It’s a skull and crossbones. It’s not a swastika. It’s a nothing burger.
