Isn’t there a saying that republicans aren’t born republican but they are forced that way? Your anecdote rings true with my experience.

Upvote for usual MSM banter. In truth, JRE is good entertainment. It’s not a learning platform because there isn’t an active engagement component. He’s good at navigating you through a complicated issue by using storyline like pacing with the people he is interviewing being characters in his story. But it’s hardly ever anything one can hold onto once that episode is done. He’s pleasant to listen to and the bit of drama keeps it fresh and spontaneous.
But apparently these women are…educated? I don’t know how it all works if the end result of education (or being “liberal”) is being bigoted and clueless and lacking complete empathy towards the opposite sex.

Sounds like bog standard indoctrination and party line to me.

Honestly it’s the same issue with new media. Not much has improved. Moralizing and bullshit rhetoric is well and alive across the internet.

Substack? Absolutely.
Re:The Online Sports Gambling Experiment Has Failed on Monday November 11, 2024 @05:20PM (#42110961)
Thank you. I was waiting for someone to stir the pot and start to bring in alcohol. Keep it going this is good stuff.
Re:The Online Sports Gambling Experiment Has Failed on Monday November 11, 2024 @04:42PM (#42110682)
We should establish a Haidt of online gambling so we can have another merry-go-round into how there isn’t enough conclusive evidence to correlate gambling to shitty outcomes.

Any volunteers? We are all here in the breeches waiting for a champion to rise up and give us the arena for the smorgasbord of shitposting that is about to commence from the vultures that benefit off of societal decay.

Edit: not sure why the downvotes. This is exactly what’s going to happen.

Edit 2: Bingo. See one of the top posts in this thread defending gambling by trying to draw parallels to alcohol. Let the shitposting begin.

Just leaving this here in case anyone does a search for the name: Graham Hancock.
Re:I Sent an Ethernet Packet on Monday November 11, 2024 @01:03PM (#42109098)
Cube is built on Eclipse which isn’t too bad. If you want 90s, ARM and others have you covered. I still sling Dynamic C 9 from time to time.
Re:I Sent an Ethernet Packet on Monday November 11, 2024 @01:00PM (#42109068)
> Due to the complexity of the signalling involved with ethernet, a dedicated ASIC is generally used, which takes in data at the frame level, and takes care of wiggling the electrical lines in the right way over a cable (though there are of course exceptions).

Like others in this thread I was hoping I’d see an RJ45 breakout board directly hooked into an STM32 and doing onerous bit banging and keeping it as low level and basic as possible.

Re:Ask HN: Where to put a static page that would last forever on Sunday November 10, 2024 @08:58AM (#42100253)
I’m surprised we don’t use archived/cached links for read-only content more often.
Re:Texture-Less Text Rendering on Saturday November 09, 2024 @10:55AM (#42095063)
As an aside I’ve yet to come across anything more technically complete than ClearType. Bitmaps/Textures done via some janky early-2000 NeHe tutorial inspired thing aren’t even on the table. Yeah people will hate on Microsoft and Windows and bicker and whatever, I don’t care because of all the shit I’ve dealt with trying to use freetype and additional libraries, ClearType has never let me down. I’ve used D2D with D3D in conjunction with shared surfaces and other hacks to join the two, and it’s pleasant enough that the final product is well worth the programming agony.
I’m okay with this because in addition to it, we have a lot of immigration this way that’s perfect fuel for the fire.
Re: on Friday November 08, 2024 @05:51PM (#42091105)
Already covered some basic points: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42089428

TikTok should be addressed as a tool that’s used to sow discord in the West, as it’s in control of China and by extent Russia as its economic (and military) ally. Bluntly speaking this seems to be isolated, intentionally provocative incidents that are being drummed up far beyond a reasonable amount. It’s internet being internet, for the most part. So naturally, Wired and the rest will jump on it for clicks as a pop culture thing.

It’s a trite and boring remark. You can do better.

When someone’s bargaining chip in geopolitical, economical, territorial and social affairs lies between their legs, it’s time to reconsider if they’re at the right table armed with the right arguments. This has been perennial. At a certain state of things, countries will shift from caring about two sexes as opposing halves and will bolt down as a means of preserving a country and a people. Look to China who is, against all odds, leading the way resoundingly.

As it stands, this 4B thing is an absurd stance brought out of a country that’s facing far worse circumstances than US of A. I’ve outlined who it would negatively impact the most. In this case, it’s much like being hoisted by one’s petard. It’s also an infeasible strategy because it has too many weaknesses that are immediately flanked.

2016 had Pussy Hat Protests that went nowhere. I suspect this is more of the same.

I can’t comment on what a proper and effective response to the election would be. It would certainly help if Democrats got together and put forward a candidate that gives a damn about the country and the rights of the people. But they didn’t, so the “other party” that actually cares will enact policies that benefit them instead. And they have tremendous support of a rather large population, so who am I to argue otherwise?

Men are used to being shamed for things that are not their fault at all. So this does not change the status quo much for most.

In the meantime, we’ll kvetch and play pretend and amuse ourselves by drumming up as much chaos and rage as we can over this world wide web of ours.

If this does escalate and rape cases increased, who would help? Men? The same ones that are despised?

As a closing remark to anyone on HN thinking this is a viable strategy: when you go to war with someone, dig a grave for two.

News cares about subjects that impact women. Not so much men. So when Trump or anyone else is elected that men rally behind, it’s a shock, it’s betrayal, it’s this it’s that.
This is a thoughtless, emotion-fueled reflex by women who overvalue their sexual assets. Put another way, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

In the pantheon of decision-making that governs geo political stability and ensures equality for everyone across every nation, pussy isn’t a negotiating factor at that table. The absurd reduction to this subject as a focal point of negotiation absolutely removes any higher level contributions from the entire sex and regresses their position as a key player during key negotiations, offerings, and viewpoint exchanges.

Needless to say and, as I’m sure many men have already commented on this - many men aren’t losing anything because many men haven’t had anything to begin with. So this move unilaterally hurts women far more than it hurts men.

I will also point out that it is a move that’s done to threaten and punish. But threaten and punish who, exactly? Many, many women voted for trump too. They’ll continue voting of course because it’s in their favour to remove competition from other women in this marketplace. So the only losers here are the 4B crowd.

But, given that it is a farcical play, it has not been thought out that far and it’s on the women now to showcase if they can hold up their end of the bargain. For men, they never had a choice in the matter.

Re:It feels like 2004 again on Friday November 08, 2024 @11:46AM (#42088254)
Fuck man. I wish it did feel like 2004. Much simpler times even if it was a somersault to connect to peoples IP addresses to play a simple game.

I think the article is a tad overblown. 2004 used to be way worse than today. I’ll take Gmail as-is just fine.

Re:Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16 on Thursday November 07, 2024 @10:31PM (#42083849)
I can’t speak for others but I’m in full support of some of the policies that china put in place. If I could vote tomorrow to back someone who would do a similar thing here, I would, and I’d accept whatever downsides or penalties come with it.

I want to live in a society where I can finally be an agreeable person, and I want the backing of the state to align with my worldviews. I don’t mind giving up some things to have a stable society that actually has a promising future. And if that makes me, or anyone else, a dictatorship supporter, I’ll have to shrug and say too bad.

Someone banning social media because they see it’s brain rot for many people not a power trip move. It’s the polite thing to do. I’d go one step further and hang the people knowingly profiting off of it to make an example for anyone else who might try it, but that’s a different discussion. We’ll get there soon enough.

Upvoted for mental imagery.
Re: on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @07:25PM (#42071752)
No that’s just the shit shoveling rags like quillette and Atlantic do. The author is insufferable and kept more on top of her schmoozing agenda than she did on figuring out why people voted. It’s like the article with the woman going into welding: looking, but not seeing. Fucking classists, they have no shame. It’s like they’re chronicling a page in their journal of investigations into alien life forms.

Wake me up when people start saying: “you know, if I was in your situation I would have voted for trump too.” Then, and only then, can we have a decent discussion around issues and solutions.

(Inb4 “did we read the same article?” - I assure you, we did.)

The one reliable source I’m not going to dispute with, frankly. Best of luck this time around!
Re: on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @05:57PM (#42070867)
I did. You didn’t read the internet last night.

No new knowledge was gained here. This was all well known and ignored in 2016. We are back to where we were before. Enemies to be feared.

Re: on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @05:54PM (#42070839)
Here we go again fellas. We are back to being enemies to be suppressed.
If you think news is fake, imagine history.

Morning boys, how’s the water?
If only you knew why my sweet summer child.
Upvoted because rest of the article is nonsensical as well.

They misunderestimated him.

Not gonna lie, that does sound pretty based.
