News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I skimmed this whole article and didn't see any classic LLM tells about it. Why do you think it is LLM generated?
Re:You're absolutely Right! on Friday September 05, 2025 @02:06PM (#45141639)
In the context of the web, it is not feasible to make distributed systems 'tick' their progress just to have realistic progress spinners.
The judges in these technical cases can be quite sophisticated and absolutely do learn terms of art. See Oracle v. Google (Java API case)

The holds are not "extremely" taxing, I would say. The tremors can be induced through a simple 7 step sequence of holds like wall sits or calf raises. There are walkthroughs on YouTube.

On the TRE subreddit [0], people report being able to tremor at will once they have enough experience with the technique.

Not trying to be pedantic, just clarifying that it is very accessible! I've personally been experimenting with it and find it to be helpful.

Is being well-rated on TripAdvisor a positive or negative signal? I could see it either way.
Re:Why We're Falling Out of Love with Tesla on Friday February 14, 2025 @10:08PM (#43055534)
As other manufacturers come out with electric drivetrains, Tesla is really falling behind.

I own a Model Y and it’s really barebones and plasticky. For the similar price, the Ioniq 5 is much nicer.

Similarly, the Rivians blow Model X out of the water in terms of features.

Your info might be outdated. Apple Maps is actually better than Google Maps in many ways (e.g. it says "pass this light and at the next one, turn left" instead of "in 300 feet, turn left")
Re:Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option on Tuesday January 07, 2025 @10:13PM (#42630502)
If it’s a big corp, they probably have strict data exfiltration policies for corp email.

Maybe this one email would have been fine, but if it gets tripped, it’s not worth the headache.

Corporations (which are legal persons) also cannot autonomously do any of those things.

They only act through the stewardship of natural persons who serve in their interest.

You could do the same for a forest by electing some trustees or whatever.

There’s a cool CSS vignette effect on this webpage that I hadn’t seen before.

I used to work in a monorepo of that size.

All of the PRs I ever submitted touched a handful of files in my project’s subdirectory.

You need to pay meta if you have 700 million users as of the Llama 3 release date. Not at any time going forward.
Re:macOS Sequoia is available today on Monday September 16, 2024 @06:47PM (#41561963)
They were previously in "Keychain Access," which was primarily an app for administrators so it was also a pretty bad UX.

“Nearly”. I think it is in fact universal.
Which book was that?
Re:eBook on building LLM system evals on Monday July 15, 2024 @11:12AM (#40968577)
One of the coauthors here. I’ll be hanging out in the thread to talk about evals.

I spent >50% of my time designing and advising on them at one point.

Sounds interesting; what else is part of those onboarding docs?

I think that’s the term used for synth music
Re:Releasing Persimmon-8B on Thursday September 07, 2023 @06:43PM (#37426655)
Yes, it wouldn't know what to do with the picture unless you fine-tune the model (which is why they are permissively releasing it).

The embeddings form the vocabulary of the model. The vocabulary "namespace" has 70k empty slots so you could introduce your own tokens and train on top of that, where token = some patch of multimodal data.

What do you mean by this?

I just started using Arc yesterday and they have such a video. Maybe added since you last tried it.
Are you THE beej of the network programming guide?
Re:LangChain: The Missing Manual on Friday May 19, 2023 @05:01PM (#36006799)
I don't get why Langchain is so popular. It's classic inner-platform effect: "a system so customizable as to become a replica, and often a poor replica, of the software development platform they are using."

Once we get better at getting structured output from LLMs, we can use the standard control flow mechanisms in built in to our programming languages.

Re:Firesky – The Bluesky Firehose on Sunday May 07, 2023 @02:41AM (#35848541)
Would be cool to hook this up into a Bluesky network graph like [0] and pulse the node every time someone posts. Some interesting patterns might emerge.

Re:The Little Book of Deep Learning [pdf] on Sunday April 30, 2023 @11:29PM (#35768799)
Look into k2pdfopt. The term you’re looking for is you want to “reflow” your PDFs
Re:BabyAGI: An Autonomous and Self-Improving Agent on Saturday April 15, 2023 @01:51PM (#35582844)
Why is this linked to a fork of Yohei’s original repo?
Re:The surprising roots of Japan's Indian curry on Saturday April 01, 2023 @02:19PM (#35402597)
Immigration. India is a bigger economy than Nepal and Nepalese come there to do work like this.
They know what the bandwidth graph looks like when a full DB replication/dump is in progress.

Since that level of data transfer only occurred once (when they did it), they know the attacker did not actually transfer any data.

Can you do some deduping? A lot of the matches are just the same song appearing on multiple albums or single vs. album version.
