Once I got to the chase scene with Fleetwood Mac's Tusk on the soundtrack of the first episode I was hooked.
It's time to test this ruling. Joe Biden can have let's say oh, about six supreme court justices detained for suspicion some wishy-washy thing or another.
Re:Outlook is Microsoft's new data collection service on Thursday January 11, 2024 @01:24PM (#38956375)
This doesn't seem apply to a paid corporate Office 365 subscription. My work outlook doesn't even have the Advertising Preferences item in settings.
Re:Should you add screenshots to documentation? on Thursday December 14, 2023 @12:29PM (#38644128)
Screen shots shouldn't replace good text documentation. The Doc should work find without it. But screenshots can help with comprehension. As for letting screenshots become outdated, if you are updating the rest of the doc, why wouldn't you update the screenshots at the same time?
Re:Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage Client for Android on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @02:54PM (#38536103)
Do you remember back when Pidgin, Trillian, and others created clients that worked across AOL, MSN, and other messengers. They worked for a while, they'd stop working, they'd update and start working, and that went over and over again. I'm not really looking forward to having that experience again.
Re:Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage Client for Android on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @02:45PM (#38535970)
Not really. Twitter, and Reddit publish(ed) API's that required one to obtain a key in order to use at scale. No one reverse engineered them.

One man's increased compatibility is another's security vulnerability.
What's the point of this article, to try to discredit him? He's already discredited. The whistleblowing doesn't require his trust, it's true or it's not. We already know he's not trustworthy, and surprise, he did it (at least) twice.
The reason I learned how to use vi was it's ubiquity. If I develop muscle memory which requires carrying around a USB pedal I'm not going to have a good time on any but my own workstation. Not sure it's worth it.
Re:For Two Months, I Got My News from Print Newspapers on Wednesday March 07, 2018 @11:13PM (#16542228)
That's nothing, I did it for 29 years.
Re:Tell HN: Slack decides to close down IRC and XMPP gateways on Wednesday March 07, 2018 @11:09PM (#16542216)
TIL there was an IRC gateway that I would have definitely used if I knew about it. Darn.
Re:Apple in China: who holds the keys? on Friday February 23, 2018 @06:02PM (#16450403)
Top of article: > Beginning on February 28th, all users who have specified China as their country/region will have their iCloud data transferred to the GCBD cloud services operator in Guizhou, China. So living, most likely yes. Visiting then presumably no. But who really knows?
Re:Apple in China: who holds the keys? on Friday February 23, 2018 @05:57PM (#16450362)
Apple would have us believe that they're the privacy company. They're doing a good job with that marketing message. But what's more secure? How do Google, and Amazon compare? Do I have to run my own servers? Do I have not run servers? Do I have to keep a hardened device on my person at all time? What about backups?
Re:Why Uber Can Find You but 911 Can’t on Monday January 15, 2018 @03:30PM (#16153154)

Do you really want to depend on a startup's ability to keep their service running and well funded to the location needs of emergency services? Unless they donate the grid and word associations to the public domain, it's a bad idea to use proprietary data sources for emergency services especially since there's nothing wrong with longitude and latitude, and humans really don't need to be able to read it, computers do just fine with it.

Nobody? Hyperbolic much?
Re:Super-Accurate GPS Chips Coming to Smartphones in 2018 on Friday September 22, 2017 @12:02PM (#15313339)
This is great, and will definitely cut down on collateral damage and allow for precision strikes when causing enemies of the state to become room temperature.
Re:Adding a Working Headphone Jack to an iPhone 7 on Wednesday September 06, 2017 @07:37PM (#15188015)
The way he hand-waves away Apple's statement about there being no extra space in the device is arrogant and disingenuous at best.

Does the phone altimeter work as designed? No Does the phone remain waterproof? No

Deal breaker.

The takeaway I get from this is that whenever the Kremlin is attacked, they'd rather the nearby Airports take the hit.

I guess then no one will leave, and no one will come in.

The sentiment, that Americans don't NEED fast home internet is probably more accurate than not. It's not relevant though. Need has never been the driving force in the market. It's want, and if people want it, there's no reason they shouldn't have it. Why would the head of the FCC care if people need high speed? Only if he were in the pocket of the ISP's. Then he'd need a way to NOT create rules that mandates high speed internet. And if it's not a requirement, then it's up to the business to charge whatever they want without regulation. It's insidious, and quite clever albeit evil.
Re:Detecting Chrome headless on Saturday August 05, 2017 @11:33AM (#14936194)
So again someone wants to punish all the legitimate people using a web site to get some marginal benefit from detecting the remaining <1%. The inevitable false positives don't affect the "malicious" users. Only the legitimate ones. And how much will this bloat the page load by? Adding more code to an already overly large page isn't helping anyone.

Just let the web be the web, and stop trying to control it.

Re:The case of the 500-mile email (2002) on Saturday July 01, 2017 @12:12PM (#14677673)
TIL: units is a really useful utility command that I had forgotten even existed.
You could argue that evolution will adapt to processed white food as a dietary staple.

I dare say the diabetes and heart disease epidemic is the start of natural selection weeding out the genes less tolerant of high carb, high fat diets.

You can't. Every faction has their own truth. And since people vary so widely, you might need to experiment to find your truth.

Your best bet is do do N=1 experiments on yourself. Find what works, and do that.

Re:Verelox Wiped by Ex-Admin on Friday June 09, 2017 @05:30PM (#14524743)
You prevent this by really trusting people (Trust, but verify). Don't screw them over. Treat them better than fairly. Give your employees raises before you give yourself anything.

And do backups. And then backups of those backups.

Re:Apple's 2TB iCloud plan will only cost $10 a month on Tuesday June 06, 2017 @04:51PM (#14501227)
Do they have a Synology module to backup a NAS?
Re:Apple's 2TB iCloud plan will only cost $10 a month on Tuesday June 06, 2017 @04:49PM (#14501211)
Is ZFS fireproof?
Re:Apple's 2TB iCloud plan will only cost $10 a month on Tuesday June 06, 2017 @04:47PM (#14501189)
How do I backup my iPhone automatically every night to crash plan or Backblaze?

Can't? Ok, Apple sucks. Now that that's out of the way, given the reality we have, it's worth paying Apple for the storage.

Because not everyone is a self serving greedy objectivist dick.

Some see a benefit in contributing to a shared collective good.

You must not be that old. Telephones best feature was it put everyone on an equal footing. Anyone could call anyone else. The government levied a fee on all phones to make sure that everyone would have equal access to them. And we do. It's why it worked so well for so long. It stopped working well, when we added caller ID, and blocking. If you want to block someone it should be hard, and you should have a reason beyond being annoyed. We're becoming into a selfish society who are turning against each other. When we need to start turning towards each other and remembering the golden rule.
The title of this post is what the title of the article should be. The article is presuming that a feature as designed is a flaw. When articles throw FUD like that they lose credibility. Tell it like it is, and let people decide if they want to use it. And if people don't then it'll be up to the developers to give people something they will use.
