There are many papers I can’t evaluate even with a degree in musical composition…
I think google search results are pretty bad these days. A lot of times the top results are pages that are ad-ridden and don’t contain the actual info I was looking for.

Granted, my metric of “good” is an unquantified and very subjective but to me both Bing and DuckDuckGo outperform google search.

I never said it was a great idea. I said that equating it with a one in six change of instant death is a bit dramatic.
I know another anecdote won’t help you but when I read this it immediately rang true to me.

> Smoking cigarettes is first and formost an anxiety suppression mechanism

This describes my experience pretty well.

Almost everyone I know binge drinks from time to time..

You are right that it’s better not to but calling it Russian roulette is a pretty big overstatement.

> Given a long enough timeline, every abstraction turns wrong.

This is bullshit. I think what you mean is that even a good abstraction can be used inappropriately.

You shouldn’t compound that with the fact that sometimes people create abstractions that are just bad.

Re:Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands on Wednesday August 23, 2023 @11:17AM (#37237380)
This law is intended to make large amounts of cash less useful without killing the utility of smaller amounts. If large amounts of cash become less useful that makes money laundering a lot harder.

A black market for cash already exists. The people who buy it are called money launderers.

If you want the convenience of a government backed currency you’ll need to do so digitally which makes fraud investigation a lot easier. Don’t like it? Bad luck. This is where every fair economy is heading.

This is what blendle.com does. I expected them to be a bigger success than are, retrospectively as well.

I guess that’s why I’m not an entrepreneur. :)

Re:Airbnb Collapse Is Real on Wednesday June 28, 2023 @01:13AM (#36502565)
> Uber and airbnb created value using technology by solving many pain points of consumers.

I don’t think this is as the USP airbnb was going for. Companies like Booking.com, trifago.com and Hotel.com existed prior to airbnb and had a pretty decent “human-less” UX.

I thought the usp of airbnb was that everyone with a place could rent it out on that platform. That should increase the supply. It worked pretty well for a while and still does so to a certain extend. Regulations make its service useless in some countries though.

I’m not sure what Uber did to improve the market but they’ve always been dearer than taxies where I’m from. I don’t mind giving a taxi central a call either…

Re:Impact of RHEL Changes to AlmaLinux on Friday June 23, 2023 @01:10AM (#36443031)
It should be easy to distribute RHEL back to ACME Linux via a detour right? I mean another company could distribute it to to ACME and and hide that with limited repercussions.

I guess that Legally this would have to be revealed once ACME gets sued. That sounds like an endless game of whack-a-mole to me though.

Re:Lemmy stats (users, posts, nodes, comments) on Tuesday June 20, 2023 @10:59AM (#36405029)
Honestly, performance isn’t all that bad for me. Not much worse than Reddit anyways.
> The EU is not about unity but rather about modern day colonialism.

What does this mean?

If your user account can be related to your person it’s most definitely personal data by European standards.
Re:SoftBank Vision funds post record $39B annual loss on Friday May 12, 2023 @09:14AM (#35915765)
Most Taxi companies I’ve dealt with quote if ask them. Generally you get a few bucks off if you do so at least a day in advance.

I’d rather give a call than install an app anyways.

My experience taught me that taxis are usually around the same price as Ubers in densely populated areas and wildly more expensive outside of those. I’m not very experienced as an Uber user though since I generally prefer public transport.

Maybe look into getting an e-bike. They are pretty darn awesome for stuff like this. :)
Let me start with the remark that I am on team car hater! I have to admit that hey are useful for some things.

1. People are not really able to live in rural areas without owning a car.

2. I can’t think of a viable way of last mile transport for goods. Supermarkets can’t really exist without Lorries.

3. Emergency services.

I think the main issue is personal transport by car, Especially in (semi) densely populated areas.

Re:ChatGPT – Who Owns the Content Created? on Thursday April 13, 2023 @01:15AM (#35551252)
Intellectual property is the problem, not AI.

We should abolish it. It is oppressive, hard to enforce and pointless.

I’m not sure how thing will work after we’d do something like that but I’m of the belief it will sort itself out.

Re:These Angry Dutch Farmers Really Hate Microsoft on Tuesday April 04, 2023 @01:32AM (#35435489)
> There are even people advocating to take the farms from them.

That’s the only option left on the table if they won’t shrink the livestock and diversify as farmers.

Let’s be real: it’s not like this legislation came out of the blue. Nitrogen deposition as a problem is something the sector has known about for a while. Instead of diversifying away from nitrogen emission these companies chose to double down on nitrogen washing technology. Turns out that technology doesn’t work.

Intensive livestock in the way it’s happening now doesn’t have a future in the Netherlands. I’d like to go even further and say that it makes a poor investment anywhere in the world.

Farmers are entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur means managing risks and they did that pretty poorly as a sector.

A lot of farmers invited the risk and harvested its profits. Had they diversified they would have been in much better shape.

You can’t eat your cake and have it..

Re:Paris Votes to Ban Rental E-Scooters on Tuesday April 04, 2023 @12:41AM (#35435165)
Parisians generally don’t travel by car.
This isn’t advice. People get a lot older nowadays. I recon food(safety and available) makes a big contribution to that.

Moderns food is pretty good. Just keep your diet varied and sane.

Re:What Is Recursion? [pdf] on Tuesday March 14, 2023 @02:38AM (#35148100)
I don’t think recursion is that hard to reason about. You need an understanding of how to work with it. This requires practice in the same way dealing with trigonometry required that.

If you are a programmer and feel that dealing with recursion is hard I think you’ve got an opportunity for growth there.

It’s true that recursion is harder to deal with than loops. I generally use loops and recursion for a different class of problems.

Working with trees of arbitrary depth is much easier when using recursion.

Re:Ruby/Rails Performance Comparison of Intel, M1 Max, M2 Max on Thursday February 09, 2023 @12:47AM (#34720205)
I didn’t benchmark anything so take this anecdote with a grain of salt.

When upgrading from a MacBook Pro i7 with 32g of ram to a MacBook Air M2 with 24gb I saw my rspec suite get 4 times faster.

Re:Dear Adobe, we need a special price in Egypt on Friday January 20, 2023 @02:30PM (#34458464)
Thats bs. 10-50 times higher is for unskilled labor. You should try comparing a someone with an academic background in Lagos versus someone in Cairo .
That’s strange to me. I moved over from Spotify and expected QOL degradation that didn’t happen.

Sound quality is better, artist are getting pay more and I have more music available(Joanna newsom, skeemask)

I don’t think spotify does this particularly well.. I moved over last month and this isn’t the main feature I am missing.

The feature I miss most is the weekly playlist followed closely by the multiple daily’s.

Re:Guitar Effects Guidebook, Vol. 20 [pdf] on Saturday January 07, 2023 @12:35PM (#34290406)
It isn’t. People saying modeling is indistinguishable from analog gear are just incorrect.

For a touring musician the modeling route is just WAY better. Recalling your sound night after night without working with sensitive and fiddle equipment great. The bottleneck for sound quality is always FoH and never your rig. A Kemper or helix is the better option for nearly everyone.

That being said, I wouldn’t ever use modeling in the studio. Stumbling upon a great sound when exploring doesn’t happen in the same way. Editing patches becomes a chore and analysis paralysis becomes a force of destruction.

Recalling that sound in a live setting though…

Re:Ask HN: What will everyone do if everything is automated? on Thursday December 22, 2022 @01:11PM (#34096449)
There is no “everything is automated”.

“Everything is automated” is similar to “finished software”. It just doesn’t happen.

Besides that there are many services you want to purchase where interaction with the other is part of the value of said service.

Think of going to a barber or a nice restaurant. Think about education, designers. There is also artisanal products. People pay a pretty penny for a teapot made by a master ceramist even though perfect products are made in much more automated ways.

I’m pretty hopeful about people having to work less. Maybe even about most people not having to work at all. But being able to afford luxuries like having a master chef cook your dinner from time to time is likely to require you do to some paid work and I think there will be plenty of work left for us humans.

A friend of mine was in a similar position. I’m he knew he had a wallet holding about $300k of dodge coin. He just didn’t know if he had the key.

Long story short: he spend a big amount of time trying to recover the wallet key and failed. I’d understand someone not wanting to try something like that. It must be pretty demoralizing.

Re:EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @07:40AM (#33968106)
I don’t say I have nothing to hide. I’m saying I’ve got no financial transactions above 10k to hide…

You are not allowed to hide such transactions by law in the country where I am from.

Re:EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments on Monday December 12, 2022 @01:55AM (#33951743)
Explain a single scenario of how one acquires large amounts of cash that:

1. Isn’t easy to provide provisions for.(which is how cash payments can be made legal). 2. Doesn’t require criminal activity in Europe.

I think a lot of people are thinking about this with the US tax system in the back of their minds.

The tax system in many European countries is very different. We pay WAY more income tax. That means that the incentives for tax avoidance are much greater. As a result tax avoidance is a European pastime.

I think that a more transparent financial system is a great thing to strive for. Less financial privacy is is likely to lead to. 1. less money going toward lobbying. 2. Less tax avoidance 3. Less hidden wealth. 4. Less/more expensive money laundering.

It might someday even lead to successful taxation of wealth instead of income.
