If the margins weren’t so razor thin, it wouldn’t happen
Re:OpenZL: An Open Source Format-Aware Compression Framework on Monday October 06, 2025 @06:23PM (#45496970)
Is there a way to use this with blosc?

Fighting noise pollution with light pollution
That’s for actually eating 10-15 grams.

Can’t speak for IBS, ymmv there, but similarly you are rinsing and spitting, basically just microdosing.

I recommend using a mouthwash based on xylitol which kills strains like streptococcus mutans but does not impair these nitrate reducers.
I thought these studies often control for additional factors like wealth, education etc. not sure about this one, but genuinely curious whether I am mistaken and science “did not figure it out” yet
Re:OpenAI for Countries on Wednesday May 07, 2025 @10:26PM (#43922536)
I agree that “AI for governments” is much more accurate, just saying that diametrically opposed doesn’t really capture the relationship between the two concepts well
Re:OpenAI for Countries on Wednesday May 07, 2025 @06:19PM (#43921093)
Diametrically opposed? They are distinct, but hardly opposed.
Re:Getting things "done" in large tech companies on Tuesday May 06, 2025 @08:54AM (#43904550)
Skip level is your manager’s manager, presumably 2 is one further step etc
The only way we can do something is if these actions become deeply unpopular - which they currently aren’t, still about 43% of the population are totally onboard.

All we can do is wait for the empire to tumble enough until people without empathy become personally affected and turn sour. My guess is it won’t take the full 4 years.

They don’t hide reasoning output anymore?
You could have another sqlite with this global information related to users / sessions / passwords etc

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
Re:Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year' on Tuesday January 14, 2025 @12:37PM (#42700699)
Those are not the metrics used in said performance reviews though - whether you mentored a junior engineer is.
Re:Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs on Friday January 10, 2025 @06:31PM (#42661610)
That’s not news, just reiterating, this was announced separately earlier in the week
Re:Maestro: Netflix's Workflow Orchestrator on Monday July 22, 2024 @05:11PM (#41039866)
With all due respect, there are so many projects. They don’t care about clashing with a repo that has 12 stars and 14 commits.
Re:Support HTTP over Unix domain sockets on Monday November 27, 2023 @09:52AM (#38432871)
Windows has had Unix sockets for quite a few years now.

Re:Bye Sequence, Hello UUIDv7 on Monday October 02, 2023 @09:21AM (#37737717)
As I understood it, a big part of the premise of the post was that they see sequential storage (either in db or cache layer) as desirable
Re:Bye Sequence, Hello UUIDv7 on Monday October 02, 2023 @09:20AM (#37737700)
Correct, it speeds up latency in best case scenario, and falls over in worst case scenario. Randomly sharded keys give a more consistent performance.
Re:Bye Sequence, Hello UUIDv7 on Sunday October 01, 2023 @11:17PM (#37733565)
Yes but if that machine with sequential data receives 100x the traffic of other machines, it can be worse than splitting this traffic evenly across all available machines.
Re:Open Source doesn't win by being cheaper on Thursday September 28, 2023 @12:58AM (#37685399)
All you need is knowledge about this from a former employee and you have an excellent opportunity for a lawsuit
“Creating jobs” only makes sense if funding those jobs provide actual value that wouldn’t exist otherwise. You can “create jobs” by making people dig holes and fill them up, but you’re just wasting your population’s productive time - you would be better off by just giving those people money for nothing, some of them might just do something useful in the newly created free time.

I’d argue that pumping gas overall provides very low value.

Re:CodeCompose: Meta’s AI Coding Assistant on Saturday June 03, 2023 @03:16PM (#36179658)
Does it need to be that novel of a UX?

If you want to know what some code does, just select it & hit a keyboard shortcut (or right click and choose explain from menu).

If you want AI to write code for you, write a comment starting with a specific word, it suggests the implementation and you can choose to accept & replace the comment with it.

It’s amazing there are so many of us who started on EasyUO!
Yeah, no. I’m a vegetarian and life without these meat substitutes would be much harder.
Re:Oligopoly Everywhere on Sunday December 25, 2022 @12:33PM (#34129130)
The two-party problem is directly caused by first past the post election system - I’d like to see data from other countries, my guess is party plurality is as strong as ever there.
Re:Oligopoly Everywhere on Sunday December 25, 2022 @12:30PM (#34129091)
Agreed - I have been doing the bare minimum by avoiding Marvel and Star Wars, but people simply seem to love franchises.
Re:Tim Berners-Lee: ‘Web3 is not the web at all’ on Friday November 04, 2022 @11:15PM (#33477484)
It’s only HTTP if it comes from the 1.1 region of France, otherwise it’s sparkling bytes?
Re:The first minute of every phone call is torture now on Wednesday November 02, 2022 @01:24PM (#33439572)
Hah, no it's not, I don't even have the phone app on my home screen unless I search for it.
It’s good UX - presumably most users want to turn off WiFi/bluetooth temporarily when using these buttons and this saves you from forgetting to turn it back on. I was delighted when they changed.

I agree it’d be nice to have a choice for how it works on your device, but current behavior would still be a good default.
