Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:13AM (#50288454)
How about the fingerprint reader and especially battery life during standby/lid closed? Most of the time my M1 Air is just lying around and then I use it for a specific task, and the battery can last for weeks that way.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:07AM (#50288362)
I can't believe it's been almost six years already. I still remember how mind blown I was by that computer, and I still love my M1 Air. I hope I don't need to upgrade for another few years.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:39AM (#49905688)
I'm reading the second Harry Potter book in Norwegian. It's decent practice since translations are a bit easier to read and I already know what's going on.

I'm also reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, though I'm on a bit of a break after the third book. I'd like to continue soon.

If I'm in the mood for neither of those, I read the Mushoku Tensei light novels.

Are you planning to offer alternative solutions for this, e.g. pointing a wildcard A record at the server running the instance? I'd rather not run a publicly accessible DNS server.

Re:Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal on Friday August 28, 2026 @03:44AM (#49475590)
I've deleted my PayPal account last year and haven't regretted it. Admittedly it helped a lot that I live in Norway now where everyone uses Vipps (which is so much better), and PayPal is not a thing at all.
Re:Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude on Friday August 28, 2026 @03:41AM (#49475566)
Has anyone been able to steer Claude so that it doesn't use this kind of vocabulary and super verbose code comments? We use it at work and the language and verbosity has been one of the most annoying things.
> Sunrises would be 9am-10am for about three months.

At least you'd get some sun after work. Here in Norway, the only way to get sunlight during a workday in winter is to go out during lunch break. While I do acknowledge that getting sunlight in the morning is more important than in the afternoon, I feel like subjectively I'd have more use for a little bit more sunlight after work than before work.

How many of the learnings over the past two years went into the prompt that you gave the model? Is it possible that you wouldn't have been able to prompt it so well without those learnings?

Can you point us to the service that offers a 1€ VPS?

This is one of many things that really bother me in iOS 26, after just having updated from iOS 18. It just looks wrong that it's fully transparent until you fully pulled it down, and then suddenly everything flies away. Very strange effect.

Another thing is the border effect on the icons and widgets. I wish there was a way to turn those off completely, but either you get the motion effect or you have permanent borders.

So many strange decisions.

My sweet spot is the same. I like being at the office (because I like my colleagues), but with almost an hour commute each way, going every day is very draining. I'm glad my employer is giving us pretty much total flexibility.
Finally deleted my PayPal account last summer and have not regretted it. Though I now live in Norway and everyone uses Vipps here anyway.
Re:Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief on Monday December 29, 2025 @11:56AM (#46422573)
Work is forcing us to upgrade to Tahoe end of January, not looking forward to it.
I moved from Germany to Norway and it would be awesome if they could integrate with each other. I have yet to find a way to transfer money between my Norwegian bank account and my Revolut account without substantial fees (on top of currency conversion fees).
Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. Third-party app calls don't go to the Watch. It's so annoying, I have to tell people to call me using regular phone calls or FaceTime instead of using Signal or WhatsApp because I always miss the latter ones.
I knew that ~/Applications exists, but never really used it until I started at my new job where I didn’t have admin permissions by default. Now I’ve configured Homebrew to install casks into ~/Applications and it works for almost all applications.
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025) on Monday March 31, 2025 @09:35AM (#43534885)
Great idea! One other thing that annoys me is the inability to trim workouts, mostly walking workouts which I forgot to stop. Even when the Apple Watch asks you if you want to end the workout, it doesn’t cut off the end where nothing happened anymore. It should be possible to do this (semi-)automatically using the heart rate and movement data.
Re:Apple Debuts iPhone 16e on Wednesday February 19, 2025 @05:10PM (#43108411)
Yes please. My new job just provided me with a new phone, but all the models are just too big. I guess I’ll get used to it, but I’d rather have the current features in a Mini body.
Re:Forced to Upgrade on Tuesday December 03, 2024 @01:54AM (#42303603)
I'd be happy with a new mini even every third generation. My 12 mini is still great except for the battery life (even after getting a new battery less than a year ago).
Re:The 'Return to Office' Lies on Sunday November 24, 2024 @09:22AM (#42228045)
How do you like biking 3 hours a day? I'm starting a new job next year that requires me to be at the office most days. It's 40-50 minutes each way by bus or about an hour (if you're fast or with an e-bike) by bicycle, and I'm already considering getting an e-bike for the summer months for this. (It would be only 20-25 minutes by car, but I'm not willing to commute daily by car I think. I also just don't want to own a car in the first place.)
Re:Looking for a Job Is Tough on Thursday November 14, 2024 @01:54AM (#42133729)
I guess Europe isn't nearly as bad as the US. My portfolio (and probably my actual skills) are nowhere close to what some of those in the comments that can't find a job are offering, but I was able to secure a job in Trondheim, Norway (where I'm about to move in January) with a single application and interview. I assume there weren't too many people in the Trondheim area who were willing to work at an office and who already know Vue.js pretty well.
I've been using my Suri toothbrush for about 2 1/2 years I think (I had one on preorder before it came out). It's nice, compact, brushes well (according to my recent dentist visit), great battery life (usually over a month of twice per day brushing), and great USB-C charging case (that's the best part IMO).

What I don't like:

- Automatically turns off after 4x 30 seconds - I usually need a little more time than that.

- Proprietary replacements heads - I'm worried that they'll go out of business and I won't be able to get replacement heads anymore. (I could buy them in bulk now, but what if the toothbrush itself breaks and I can't get a new one?)

Hi, I had your intro video suggested to me on YouTube and it looks pretty cool. However, neither the videos nor the website answers my most critical question: Is it fully local, or is there a cloud involved? Thanks!
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)? on Wednesday October 02, 2024 @02:21AM (#41717720)
The climate calculator is absolute genius! I instantly had to share it with my friends.
Re:Kino: Pro Video Camera on Thursday May 30, 2024 @05:19AM (#40521658)
Which was an about 10x increase from the original price. Sure, it was definitely underpriced back then, but it was still a... let's say bold move.
I really like Telegram from a UI/UX standpoint (so much better than Signal), but Pavel Durov is such a sketchy character that it's starting to turn me off. How can he be touting about being secure when they still haven't implemented end-to-end encryption by default? Also so many other things if you follow Durov's channel.

(I use Telegram and Signal each for about 45% of my messaging, even though I'm in Europe where WhatsApp is so prevalent.)

Re:Superfile – A fancy, pretty terminal file manager on Saturday May 11, 2024 @01:42PM (#40329536)
When did you try it and do you have an idea why it could have happened? I'm simply curious about it, but this doesn't sound great. I found this issue [1] which should have been fixed in version 1.1.1 [2].

[1]: https://github.com/MHNightCat/superfile/issues/72 [2]: https://github.com/MHNightCat/superfile/releases/tag/v1.1.1

I wonder why people risk their jobs for $300.
I don't get these. Maybe because I messed with the iOS settings? Even if I type "tiktok" in full, I only get one photo (I guess a screenshot that contains it) as well as a recently accessed website that mentioned it. And the "Search App Store" button, no ad.
