In regards to your edit, avocados and chili peppers both originate in Mexico. Guacamole was a native dish so it's been around for centuries, but the modern version with onions and cilantro couldn't have existed until the Spanish brought those ingredients to Mexico
Re:How to Work Hard
on Tuesday June 29, 2021 @02:52PM (#27680148)
This is something I struggle with, as someone who worked really hard in school but has become less productive as a professional. In school there are well-defined deadlines and discrete tasks with extrinsic rewards in the form of grades. Even though the rewards were "fake" in a sense, people cared about them so I was motivated to earn those rewards, partially due to competitive drive.
In my professional life, that motivation has all but disappeared for me. I already have the comfortable salary I hoped for, and individual achievements aren't directly rewarded with more money in the short. So what else is left as an extrinsic reward that can provide that drive on a daily basis?
I haven't found the answer to that yet myself. Sometimes I feel like I've been given too much too soon and that's removed my hunger to work. That plus existing in a collaborative environment instead of a competitive one.

What makes you think hiring managers will suddenly prioritize "quirky sexy hipsters" if those traits aren't desirable for the role? You seem to be assuming users on the hiring side will use it the same way the average TikTok user browses through average TikTok content

Yes, the Unabomber was a mathematician-gone-terrorist who had a manifesto of sorts published decrying industrialization and technological profress. His academic career was pretty short. There's a Wikipedia page if you want to read up on it.

Agreed. It might bring some marginal convenience but overall feels like a gimmick. I'd rather just have a normal keyboard with an Esc key.

Same. As much as I would like to move off Facebook, my friends are worth more to me than that. I could still communicate with them if I didn't have it, but it would take much more effort and I'm not the type to reach out that often. For people in my age range, we often make a facebook event, invite all the relevant friends, and it's done. If you don't have Facebook or don't check it, I won't remember to text you an invite. Maybe it makes me a shitty friend but I just assume everyone will see it on Facebook

Definitely. People are reluctant to buy $1 or $2 mobile apps that would be really useful, even though they would never notice the money was gone. Just because most apps are free. Also, most people lose more than they gain by deleting their facebook or anything else. Tech people tend to care about privacy because of all of the terrible implications and possibilities that come with all your personal info being freely bought and sold, but the vast majority of people will never (at least consciously) suffer any ill effects of government tracking or targeted ads.

Re:Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
on Monday March 19, 2018 @02:06PM (#16621156)
The article also mentions the pedestrian as "a woman walking", so it's not clear whether they are referring to a cyclist as a pedestrian, or whether they are getting different information and actually think it was a pedestrian. Very confusing
Re:Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
on Monday March 19, 2018 @01:45PM (#16620840)
The video says bicyclist and shows a bicycle, while the written article says pedestrian and said the car hit "a woman walking"... I'm confused as to why there is a contradiction, but considering the video shot of the bicycle I assume you're correct

It's moreso that the inverse is true. Not working hard will almost certainly not lead to success (unless your family is rich enough to where you can just "buy" more success). Working hard will not necessarily lead to success, but it's a prerequisite. The amount of work required also depends on what obstacles you're born with and degree of success is desired

Most of this stuff is part of common CS curriculums though. The real answer is just that you have to take linear algebra as a separate class. It's not supposed to be all the math for CS

It's even easier when kids live close enough that it's a one minute walk down the street. There are pros and cons to living in the suburbs but it's great for kids to be able to play and socialize with other kids

It's a shared responsibility. The NFL has devoted a lot of effort to hiding the reality of what the audience is watching. Now that we know fully how dangerous it is, it's our responsibility to stop watching it.
Re:I’m the Wife of a Former N.F.L. Player. Football Destroyed His Mind
on Friday February 02, 2018 @02:00PM (#16293223)
It won't change quickly enough, people will simply stop playing it, and eventually stop watching it as well. I've already stopped watching NFL football (mostly, it's hard to completely cut off from a team I've followed since childhood), as it just makes me too uncomfortable to watch. The big hits don't feel exciting anymore, just gruesome now that I know the reality of how unsafe it is. And I don't plan to let my children play it. Many people are of the same mind, and I think the tide will turn eventually.

Football players purposely spear other players with their helmets with full force. They had to make rules against doing this, and it still happens, although with less frequency. They are not using their helmets as a last line of defense like your motorcycle helmet. They use them as weapons.

Agreed. In my anecdotal experience, imprecise language and simple logical mistakes made in conversation is a pretty frequent source of miscommunication and minor interpersonal conflict. But I can't really tell people to speak more precisely or consider the logical implications of their speech without sounding like a prick

Re:Facebook – You are the Product

That's my experience. I use it to keep in touch with friends and family, and to keep on top of events being held in my community and by my friends. I'm not sure what I would do without the Event and Group parts of facebook, as many of my friends and communities I'm a part of use those to plan/organize social activities and it works pretty well. One of my close friends who never checks his facebook is constantly out of the loop on that stuff.
In my experience most people idly browse through the news feed for a couple minutes a few times a day. I doubt that a large portion are actually addicted to it.

I don't think very many people are interested in achieving their theoretical mental limit any more than their physical limit. What would be the purpose of that? Diminishing returns applies to nearly every endeavor. Unless you are so preoccupied with a single goal that practically nothing else matters, you will always sacrifice some potential improvement on any goal to make room for the other important aspects of your life.
