Re:LibreOffice 3.5.4 released with up to 100% performance improvements
on Thursday May 31, 2012 @11:54AM (#4048673)
I just downloaded it because its been bogging down my machine. Its running notably smoother and quicker but I've got a regression on how its rendering the document I'm working from. Whats really stinks, its an internal document so I can't send it upstream so they can fix the issue.
The rendering bugs with Microsoft formats are understandable but still extremely frustrating.

If I'm not mistaken, ruby and python both offer similar ideas. I've only used both passingly
Re:Ask HN: Who is using Go language?

So whenever people ask me about Go, I try and get them to keep in mind this isn't meant to be a competitor to python/ruby or any of that. Approach it from the mindset of a C guy and it will look amazing. The biggest benefits over python/ruby are static typing and that it is compiled. I know static typing isn't popular around here but it has its benefits. I love go and I know web programming is possible in it, but I'd never use it for that. To me it shines at system level services, embedded linux, and anything with high performances and reliability requirements without real time requirements.
We were actually having a talk today about using it here on an embedded Linux device we produce. I'm not very confident anything will come of it but I think it would be a good fit.

Not all of us run Windows. I used Linux through my whole degree. Luckily my CS program was very good about very rarely requiring closed source or windows only software. There was only once, for some software engineering course, that I had to go down to the lab and use their machines. I think the homework was required to be done in Visio or something like that.

I really like the blog and its my go to site for legal software news and I don't think there is some kind of higher power backing it but I'm still very careful with everything I read there. I haven't seen any evidence of corporate backing, but there is no attempt to hide bias. Its definitely far from an objective news source.

Its disappointing in the short term, but look at the big picture. All this extra interest and purchases from the private sector if handled correctly will let them buy in bigger bulks, twist more arms in manufacturing, and find and fix more bugs. In the long run getting this boards out to a wider audience will give you a more stable, feature-rich and cheaper product.

They talked a fair amount about it on Marketplace, a public radio show about business and economics. Still isn't exactly mainstream but its outside the tech news circle.

Just because those didn't come with threats doesn't mean all attacks come without threats. Also it doesn't prove that all threats won't be followed by an attack.
The unibomber is one example. He would send mail bombs if newspapers didn't heed his threats and publish his ramblings.

If I remember correctly... it was because they were offering free hosting to political groups and someone was using it to host bomb plans without them knowing.
I'm sure the time I'm thinking of had to have been before 2004 because I remember not even having a drivers license at the time.

Again? Didn't they get all their servers seized back in the late 90s early 00's too?

It helps though. High adoption, especially with bigger companies, leads to my eyes on the code which can cause a higher quality run time. It also means there are more tools, frameworks, reference books, and ultimately jobs out there for it.

Go look at that thread too. It is ridiculous. He's a brand new user who just started one thread called "IAMA someone who 'leaks' information about Microsoft's future plans. AMAA" and in it he says "I do not work for Microsoft, any of it partners or contractors" yet he seems to know everything about a wide variety of things inside MS from dev tools to Windows to xbox, I didn't see a single "I don't know" reply in the thread. There are a lot of redflags in there on that being a huge load of BS.

Ah for some reason I had in my head the bootstrap was a smaller, simpler compiler. Thanks for the link and clarification.

I thought gcc built its own bootstrap compiler to do the heavy lifting of the build. Can LLVM not build the bootstrap compiler or was I mistaken in thinking this?

You really don't care as much when its got mains power but not all of these devices are plugged in. You will see them a lot in simple hand held consumer electronics like garage door openers, remote controllers, wireless mouses, kitchen timers and so on. In battery powered devices saving a mA make a world of difference.

You can have an OS running and not have it 100% stable for long term with small latent bugs. I've actually got a prototype board I'm working on right now that runs Linux just fine but will lock up and need to be rebooted every few days.
But as you said, for 20 quid who cares?

If I remember right, last time I got samples from TI they shipped from them and not from digikey. Its been a little bit.
Location might play in to it some, I live about 15 min away from their headquarters.
Re:Raspberri PI Release Announcement

With things like this I'd rather wait for the 2nd or 3rd run anyways. They are a small group who are doing this on a shoestring budget for a price point with a tiny profit margin and targeting a highly technical audience; I won't be shocked if there are some small hardware bugs that make it past QA in the first run.
Its worth the waiting a little bit to let them iron all that out.

Agreed. I use it on Linux and OSX and my only real beef with it on OSX is that it runs under X11. Id rather the mildly clunky OSX interface where I know where everything is than a total new foreign web interface. I guess its just a matter of taste.
