Sure. Same here. I was writing js chat and realtime games back in '99.

Don't get me wrong, SPDY is cool and good to see. But users won't notice any real difference. It's like when someone re-does a flash game in HTML5 and we (as geeks) go 'wow awesome', and non-geeks go 'uh? so what'

Re:SPDY: What I Like About You on Friday September 23, 2011 @09:43AM (#3029927)
I, and thousands of my users, use them fine every day thanks.

SPDY vs comet may be noticable if you're doing a real time game or something. But SPDY vs websocket should be the same.

I'm just saying, it's not "wow you can now do X you couldn't before". It's "Oh they made X a bit faster"

Re:SPDY: What I Like About You on Friday September 23, 2011 @08:02AM (#3029685)
technically cool, and under the hood an improvement, but end users won't notice anything different. Comet and websocket work just fine.

I'm more interested in browser developments that mean you can do stuff you couldn't before - access to geolocation/multitouch/sound/webcam etc.

ah ok I see...
Re:One Million Concurrent TCP connections on Friday September 23, 2011 @02:20AM (#3029055)
FWIW, netstat isn't fun to use. conntrack is better, or cat /proc/net/ip_conntrack
Re:Facebook Timeline on Thursday September 22, 2011 @02:09PM (#3027039)
Where's the line?

Rating how good your past girlfriends were in bed? Describing how you had the best valentines day with a previous girlfriend, and not with your current wife?

People like to believe they're special. Talking too much about ex-gf/bf's is a recipe for disaster. They can't handle the truth!

Do you tell your wife her ass looks big as well? ;)

Several affiliate networks explicitly allow you to use your own affiliate links.

Also, if you're more concerned about it and want an easier way, use some reward/cashback program website.

For bonus points:

Find the credit cards affiliate program. Sign up to it, and use it. You might get for example $50 commission, for signing up to a 0% credit card, if you use your affiliate link.

Not sure friendfeed ever got enough users to know scaling issues...

Personally I would go with async DB, or have DB access in its own thread(s) and async communicate with that.

Re:A First Look at BankSimple on Wednesday September 21, 2011 @02:14PM (#3023088)
FWIW, Banks in for example the UK, already do.

It constantly surprises just how far behind the US is in several areas.

They don't need to.

You search for X, they show adverts related to X.

The extra targeting stuff probably increases their revenue a few %.

Re:Google+ Opens to All on Tuesday September 20, 2011 @03:32PM (#3019220)
Just FWIW, I used Google+ for 2 weeks or so. Then I got bored and went back to Facebook. I think 90 days is certainly enough time to lose any early momentum you had.
> "The fact is that their entire business revolves around collecting personal data, often without being clear to the user about the details."

BS. They sell advertising.

> And my socks or bowl doesn't have the ability to record my personal calls or track my location.

How do you know? You're just more trusting of stuff that doesn't look like it has extra functionality. For all you know, bowl manufacturers could embed GPS tracking devices in there.

There comes a point where you just have to trust people selling you stuff won't be evil.

No, I've had an iPhone, and had android phones. At the moment I mainly use android.

My criteria for buying a phone does not feature "Does it respect my freedom". As usual Stallman is on a different planet to the rest of us, who just want shit to work.

Does Stallman only buy socks as long as he has full manufacturing instructions included? If he buys a bowl, does he insist they include the mould used to create it, as well as all the paints, a DVD documenting how it was made etc.

He's entertaining, but not much more than that.

Since when has mob rule ended in a good way? ;)
I for one love not having my freedom respected. It means good products that work.
Re:James Gosling witnesses and blogs Reno airshow crash. on Saturday September 17, 2011 @02:40AM (#3007430)
FWIW, I'm pretty sure going to an air show/air race is a fairly risky decision in the grand scale of things.
Re:What's wrong with this code, really? on Friday September 16, 2011 @02:21PM (#3005621)
The correct answer is "This code looks ugly, and bad".
