Re:Show HN: Stock Performance of US Senators on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @06:37PM (#23409775)
does this include former senators? Al Franken shows up in the search at the top.
Sounds similar to the old Fluid website wrapper for MacOS X ( https://fluidapp.com/ )
Re:HPE sets end date for hobbyist licenses for OpenVMS on Wednesday April 08, 2020 @02:08PM (#22815404)
yes, there is definitely a method to gen the paks.
Re:My Business Card Runs Linux on Tuesday December 24, 2019 @10:54AM (#21872793)
you probably have cards in your wallet right now that run (a decidedly stripped down) version of Java.
the /r/pfSense subreddit also has a bunch of Netgate staff as moderators
I like how this basically enshrines in law that religion is factually incorrect
Re:Pizza Hut’s First Website on Tuesday October 22, 2019 @01:42PM (#21326525)
I remember the pizza ordering scene in The Net (1995) seemed very futuristic at the time:

The Moon and ISS are pretty easy to see almost everywhere.
Re:Cartridge Printed Circuit Boards on Sunday September 15, 2019 @12:01PM (#20977815)
how about MAME, which has a zip-based format containing raw ROM dumps, and the "CHD" format for disk/disc based media? obviously all of the metadata is still contained within MAME itself.
Re:Firefox Reality on Friday July 26, 2019 @11:44AM (#20535619)
yeah, really. Why not put it on Steam?
Re:Preserving Laptop Stickers on MacBooks on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @06:12PM (#20407144)
I've been doing this for years with easy-to-acquire clear protective films that are specifically cut for laptops.
especially when proving authorship of bitcoin would be a simple matter for the actual Satoshi - just sign a message with the same key as the recipient of the genesis block. He attempted to do this and failed in a stunningly obvious way.
Re:Lenovo BIOS Simulator on Friday July 05, 2019 @12:25PM (#20363708)
I used to work phone support for Dell and we had tools similar to this to help troubleshoot over the phone without having access to the exact hardware the customer had.
Re:Vintage video game cartridges with built-in modems on Sunday June 30, 2019 @01:01AM (#20316441)
Similar, but not solely contained in a cartridge:

Nintendo Family Computer Network

and the Nintendo Satellaview which did things similar to the SEGA Channel.

Re:Introduction to Nintendo 64 Programming (1999) on Sunday June 23, 2019 @01:51AM (#20253514)
It should given the N64's relationship to Silicon Graphics

Then you just have to absorb $199 for the VESA mount.
Also, Mozilla is largely dependent on Google via their default-search arrangement, so even if it's not Webkit/Blink based, Google still has significant influence.
Re:Impossible Foods Responds to Glyphosate Allegation on Tuesday May 28, 2019 @03:06PM (#20033265)
This sounds like when that mommy blogger raised a completely misguided stink about "yoga mat chemical" being present in Subway bread.
Twitter is the worst platform for long-form content like this.
Re:Nest, the company, died at Google I/O 2019 on Friday May 10, 2019 @12:54PM (#19879673)
It's like you're purposely describing the least useful application of smarthome devices.

Setting up geofence triggers, time/event-based triggers, etc. is the real power of smart devices. I have automations set up so if I arrive home when it's dark, lights in my house turn on automatically so I don't have to fumble for light switches. I have motion sensors so if I walk into rooms, the lights turn on automatically and then turn off after I leave. I can set up schedules to turn lights on and off while I'm not at home so my house looks occupied.

Also, with Apple Homekit, there is a control center widget so you just swipe up, tap home and your "favorite" devices are very quickly accessible from anywhere in the world.

I believe that iPhones for the past generation or two have defaulted to taking pictures in HEIC.
Re:S/MIME Version 4.0 Message Specification on Wednesday May 01, 2019 @11:57AM (#19798347)
Within the US Department of Defense (who may be the most widely-deployed users of S/MIME), email encryption keys (which all DoD personnel carry on a smartcard) are escrowed with DISA.
Re:HyperCard Adventures on Saturday February 23, 2019 @11:53PM (#19237200)
appears so, yeah. probably very similar (if not the same) to the emscripten version of PCE that they use over at archive.org:

Re:Microsoft Workers Demand It Drop $450M U.S. Army Contract on Friday February 22, 2019 @08:36PM (#19230991)
Pretty sure the Navy/Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) is the largest Active Directory deployment in the world still.
Sounds sort of like the New Deal "Civilian Conservation Corps" that built up many of the national park facilities we now enjoy in the USA.
Re:Goodbye, EdgeHTML on Thursday December 06, 2018 @06:11PM (#18623427)
There is also a Facebook-specific container addon that limits Facebook's footprint even more than the standard container addon (and will work alongside it)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/facebook-cont...

Also with the standard container addon you can specify that sites always open only in your specified container, so you could just set Facebook to always open in its own container that way.

Re:Square Terminal on Thursday October 18, 2018 @07:49PM (#18253315)
As someone from a place where you tip just about anything, it is crazy to me as well. I want flat, upfront prices.
Re:Square Terminal on Thursday October 18, 2018 @07:47PM (#18253303)
The ideal solution here is to get rid of tipping, but I don't see that happening in my lifetime.
They are intact but have gotten darker in color, they are no longer the bright orange you would have hoped for.

I think after 5 years of military service as an officer and a military academy EE degree you could easily obtain very lucrative military contractor work, but of course this is generally going to be in the weapons/electronic warfare sphere which may or may not be ethically compatible to some folks.
