Someone from a rich family has more of a safety net, straight out of the gate, than someone from a poor family.

Just curious, why did you think there was a pivot away from flat design?

I'm also interested in learning about some alternative designs though.

*All due

:)

I actually really wasn't being facetious. It was my understanding that podcasts were an Internet centric thing, and was curious whether there were offline versions I wasn't aware of.

I love the idea of an "aural mobile tradition" (so to speak I guess). The idea of a content being traded via mobile untethered from a central server. I suppose that's kind of like Bittorrent for mobile?

The episode is explicitly mentioned in the article.

Also, just curious, is there any other kind of podcast besides an internet one?

That's not a bad system. Can I ask how long it took you to upload it all to Dropbox?
Re:Yup, it’s vegans who have caused the california drought on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @05:51PM (#9344273)
In case anyone isnt getting the sarcasm in the title, quote from the article:

>Since I happened to have a pound of almonds in the refrigerator I decided to count up those little water suckers and see how much water it takes to produce a pound of almonds. It was bad. Four hundred and thirty-three gallons of water.

>Four hundred and thirty-three? Wait a minute. How about a pound of beef? (I dare say it’s a lot easier to eat a pound of beef than it is to eat a pound of almonds.) According to the folks at waterfootprint.org it takes between 3,000 and 5,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef.

As someone at the very other end of the 20s spectrum:

1. My own responsibility towards myself and my life weighs a lot more heavily on me at 29 than it did at 22. At 22 I had faith that it would work out, somehow. I think that's a feeling to be taken advantage of while you still have it.

2. Conversely, I also realize now that I won't be successful at something that I don't like, and that doing something I like is worth more than money. Obviously this only works to a certain extent, I still need to live. But it seems more and more that as long as you are pursuing you believe in and enjoy, you aren't poor in spirit.

My point being: maybe don't worry so much for the feasibility of your dreams at this moment in your life.

Re:Google purges bad extensions from Chrome on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @12:03PM (#9341717)
An extension I use regularly got zapped (Website Screenshot). There are definitely alternatives out there, but it's a little annoying that there was no indication as to WHY it was removed. Oh well.

Poorly done parallax scrolling. You'd think they would have learned by now.
Re:US Threatened Germany Over Snowden, Vice Chancellor Says on Thursday March 19, 2015 @12:59PM (#9233223)
This is an absurdly broad comment. The US has been a super power for over half a century. You've distilled decades of complex foreign policy involving every nation on earth down to a five sentence blanket condemnation.

This seems like an extremely cynical, not to mention pretty dubious explanation for why there are (occasionally) cars in Central Park.

Re:You gotta be rich to own a cheap car on Thursday February 05, 2015 @03:40PM (#9005881)
Wait, I wasn't taught this, and my family takes pride in backing into our driveway (which is narrow and difficult to back out of).

Why is backing up bad for your car?

But within a certain range, I really only care what someone in a similar position to me is making.
Re:Gotham Air: Manhattan to JFK in 6 minutes for $99 on Friday January 23, 2015 @09:52AM (#8935080)
Taxi is much easier. If you've got the dough, you're going to take a taxi. It's a flat $45 rate out to JFK as well.

I was just thinking about this when I read the recent wired article. I'm glad this has been updated to work again.

I have graph search. Tried this, got four results, all male.

So yes, this seems to be true.

Re:No, I'm not going to download your bullshit app on Monday February 04, 2013 @01:54PM (#5166166)
Offtopic, but I prefer it that way. I hear enough people yammering away all day, I don't need it on my commute as well (I'd be fine with it if they just instituted data, but since when has the MTA ever done anything intelligently?)
They already are used domestically. One was used in North Dakota to track and arrest armed subjects (http://articles.latimes.com/2011/dec/10/nation/la-na-drone-a...). Another was used in Austin, TX to do recon for a drug raid (http://www.kvue.com/news/DPS-using-drones-to-fight-crime-loc...).

Granted they are not widespread yet, but the seal has definitely been broken.

> Whose career can then be presented as 'eccentric' and thus the threat immunised.

This is the part I don't understand. Who is immunizing? His critics? Or his work is immunized by having gone to public school?

Seems to me that what he chose to do as an adult should not be discounted because of where he went to school as a child. From the article, and what else I know of Banksy, it sounds like he is a very self-made person. As you pointed out, it also sounds like his early education gave him the skills to see the absurdity and hypocrisy in the world and address it creatively. Why is that a bad thing?

I'm confused.

Isn't that what App.net is supposed to be? Or are there problems with it I can't identify (being too poor to deem $5 a month on a social network a valid expense).
This is beautiful. It fulfills the promise of worldwide webcams (being able to easily peer into different parts of the world) with better quality, better interface, and mobile.

I tend to get overly moony about things like this, but I think this is one of the things that makes the Internet really great. It's a window to the world, the world seen by people not sitting at their computers but walking, talking, participating.

I really really like this, great job.

Something my Mother said whenever I asked/demanded something as a child that I am just now coming to appreciate:

"Do you need it, or do you want it?"
