Re:HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router on Monday July 20, 2026 @05:05AM (#48976129)
I love Mikrotik products but they are lacking what I need at home. I need basic IPS/IDS, notification when something is wrong without writing mikrotik scripts, easy backup failover, etc not VxLAN, QinQ and BGP extensive filtering :) I moved to Unifi Cloud Gateways as home/small soho routers and can't be happier. But Mikrotik stays as emergency hardware backup ..
I read article and still - there is no answer why it is mostly right hand. It explain why hand specialisation took place but why right is dominant, not left ?
Google is no better here, I would say they are even worse since they are scanning your files actively. Remember story of Father who was asked by doctor to send his baby son private parts photos due to covid and Google not only locked him out but also notified Police. Even after getting statement from Law Enforcement there was no crime they didn't restore his access. Guy lost 20 years of live history due to algorithm.
Re:Embassy: Modern embedded framework, using Rust and async on Friday January 09, 2026 @03:34AM (#46551388)
It's already in use at least it automotive. If you are not working with safety critical systems (ADAS type) Rust and to some extent embassy is already in the wild. Companies like ETAS (https://www.etas.com/ww/en/) or Ferrous (https://ferrous-systems.com) are working to certify Rust and some crates (embassy is there) to be used with safety critical components. It's not question if but when it will be used. Volvo, Renault and some Chinese brands already ship cars with Rust embedded components in non safety critical path.
Re:A monopoly ISP refuses to fix upstream infrastructure on Sunday November 23, 2025 @04:35AM (#46022053)
You have an option. Starlink. If you are not FPS player you will be really happy. There are service interruption, but they are very rare (at least for me). Just drop single ping here and there.
Re:Greenland Ditches Starlink for French Satellite Service on Wednesday October 22, 2025 @05:12AM (#45666562)
Calling them "competitor" is eufemism. Cheapest plan (Anchor) is $625/month for 40 GB, with 10/2 Mbps speeds.

Greenland decision was political not technical to pay x5 more for x10 slower service.

Re:Vaultwarden commit introduces SSO using OpenID Connect on Friday August 15, 2025 @03:27PM (#44916487)
Kanidm made some weird decision that ruled it out in one of big organisation I try to deploy it. Separate Radius password. For telco that’s half its use cases, and there is separate random password. Whole Network engineering department was like WTF ? You can’t have single password which is one of important reasons to have SSOA.
You are right. Polish Head of Police had one in his office[1]. He launch it in his office without violent interracion.

Re:The bewildering phenomenon of declining quality on Monday July 21, 2025 @03:28AM (#44632616)
Why on earth you choose product so expensive where dryer is basically fan with heater ? With that price range you can buy Miele hardware with heat pump dryer that is basically non-breakable and an order of magnitude more energy efficient.

Really - I would like to know how you came to purchase decision :)

Re:The bewildering phenomenon of declining quality on Monday July 21, 2025 @03:17AM (#44632559)
Parts are another story. I have miele Washing Machine. It has brushed motor so after ~8 years I need to replace brushes. Miele ones cost 60$. That's 20% price of cheapest washing machine I found on market. Im' sure 40$ of that is handling those spare parts across many years. Other, more complicated components cost more than cheap, other vendor washing machine.
Add e-sim so I can use it as my all-around planet travel phone and I'm sold.
Bureaucracy at it finest in terms of user ease of use. 1.1.1.1, 9.9.9.9, 8.8.8.8 and they came up with IP's that can't be more random.

Perfect example how one can destroy whole concept with bad user experience.

This is mass problem with almost any topic you want to share. I'm sport shooter, range officer and competition jury. You have no idea what crazy stunts YouTube do for Gun/Sport Shooting related content. YT terms containt some weirdest restriction for things like "shown magazine capacity". Wrong angle on video and your 10 round mag is seen by YouTube as 30 round and your video is gone.

You can show silencer disconnected from firearm, connected to firearm but showing moment you screwing it to end of barrel and your video is banned. There are dozens rules that are so vague that if YT wants he can remove any gun related content.

This is problem YT is not willing to fix because collateral damage costs are peanuts comparing to beeing sued and loose because some real illegal content slip trough filter. I don't expect any improvement here because there is no business justification.

You were Arthur C. Clarke (geo sattelite case) of aircraft engineering ;-) Buses are wildly used since 90's. Mostly CAN, the same one used in cars and Avionics Full-Duplex Switched Ethernet (AFDX) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avionics_Full-Duplex_Switched_...
Saying "bit of a shit" about company who practically destroyed 20 years of someone data,by blocking account against all facts customer and police provided it not "a bit". This is pure evil. https://www.businessinsider.com/google-reported-dad-police-p...
Re:DeepSeek: X2 Speed for WASM with SIMD on Wednesday January 29, 2025 @05:15AM (#42863383)
My current conslusion is quite often these LLM's are liars. I've asked for some Rust async code - it provided perfecly reasonable code with some crates(libs) I was not familiar. When asked about them I've spilled my drink on an answer: "This is imaginary crate providing async implementation for SNMP". Crazy.. The biggest problem with LLM'are they never tell you "I don't know/there is no answer I can find" - don't know the answer - make it up :)
I'm always sceptic about range. Polish city Gdańsk made tender for electric buses. Requrement was at least 400km real range. Winner promise that and reality was ~250km. There was no chargers installed on terminal loops because it should handle whole day on single charge. That is result of designing system without actual tests and rely only on vendor promises :)
My ls alternative: alias ls 'exa -lh --color always --group-directories-first --icons' alias tree 'exa --tree -L3 --long'
Re:Warsaw came close to never being rebuilt (2015) on Wednesday July 24, 2024 @04:33AM (#41054841)
Depends on Poland location. I moved from Warsaw to coast and my air filter is gathering dust in a basement. Due to natural windy weather here air is extremely clear almost whole year including winter. And 25 degC is considered hot here instead 35 in capitol city ;-)
Is is OpenSource ? Can it be run as docker pull; docker run ? If this is an option then use can make sure it will work offline..

Anyone found source code for this tool ?

Re:Omegle founder shuts down site forever? on Thursday November 09, 2023 @10:24AM (#38206150)
Read the article. I don't understand the logic of this. It's like leaving loaded gun on the desk and its gun fault (tool) when your kid shoot someone with it. IMO this is bad parenting. Any tool that provide anonimity and privacy can be abused. It is not like anyone was forced to use it. You have to go there explicitly. Adding random video chat to i.e Signal app makes it another Omegle "problem" ?
Re:The EV transition trips over its own cord on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @09:50AM (#38098147)
Rise ov EV is in fact death of independent workshops and service centers. Encryption, components pairing everywhere.. Service costs for EV are crazy for even small problem anywhere close to battery or power circuits. These are two main reasons I stay away from EV.

Buing is one thing. TCO after warranty is another one.

Re:Was Rust Worth It? on Thursday October 26, 2023 @09:08AM (#38025007)
I disagree. I have similar observation. With modern editors and Language Server that are giving immediate feedback writing strongly typed languages doesn't differ than writing python.
Re:Deep dive into the UK air traffic control meltdown on Monday September 11, 2023 @12:29PM (#37469683)
If you don't care about readers reading it or not then what is the point to publish an article ?
Re:Deep dive into the UK air traffic control meltdown on Monday September 11, 2023 @12:22PM (#37469576)
Small suggestion. Don't choose obscure language (in terms of popularity, 28th on TIOBE index with 0.65% rating) to visualize structure and algorithms. Otherwise you risk average viewer will stop reading the moment he encounter code samples. There are 27 more popular languages, some of them orders of magnitute more.
And this is just basic routing and firewall with NAT. Now try to setup 20 MPLS L3-VPN's + dozen VPLS services on top of IS-IS routed network with that ;-)
VyOS is not targeted for such usage scenarios. It is ISP who are paying for support. I have VyOS systems with BGP, MPLS, PPPoE termination, etc that are pushing gigabits of traffic. This is VyOS usecase. Not 5W router handling home or small office.
You have very narrow definition of what software router/service router is. Firewall and two interfaces and VPN server is not the best scenario :) All those systems (pfSense etc) are for private/soho use. Big networks need stuff that is not avaiable on mentioned platforms like i.e BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detecion), MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switching), VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN), IS-IS routing protocol or Segment Routing.

If anyone knows other Opensource routing software that support all of this - let me know. To my knowledge vOS is the only one.
