Same story. Also with my mother :D
Re:/e/OS is a complete "deGoogled", mobile ecosystem on Monday March 02, 2026 @05:55AM (#47216325)
Like what problems? I am using /e/ daily for myself and my family, and it's working like a charm.
Re:/e/OS is a complete "deGoogled", mobile ecosystem on Monday March 02, 2026 @05:54AM (#47216316)
Well E/OS is mainly about privacy. And about getting rid of Google. And it works. To me that's more important and it's a better vision.
Re:A Beginner's Guide to Split Keyboards on Monday February 16, 2026 @04:53AM (#47033060)
The main question should be: are split keyboards any better than normal keyboard?

When I gave it a look, the studies were on the side of split keyboards being the hardware equivalent of snake oil.

But whatever.

And maybe then: are keyboards the best input device in 2026?

Re:Why Half Your Skills Expire Every Few Years on Monday February 09, 2026 @04:52AM (#46943491)
I like the half-life of knowledge a lot, but it should better take into account that using your craft actually improves what you know. This half-life is more a thing for stuff you never use in your life. And is there anything good to remember things that have no use for you? It's just wasting space in your head.

So having your skills expire after a while might actually be a good thing.

"We stand today at the brink of civilizational and envi- ronmental collapse."

No we don't.

End of me reading this paper.

Re:John Varley has died on Monday December 15, 2025 @05:30AM (#46272651)
Wow so passive-agressive.
Re:GrapheneOS Moving Out of France on Friday November 28, 2025 @04:32AM (#46077108)
If that paranoia is related to their participation in organized crime... well, governments should be the least of their problems in a few years.
Re:Homeschooling Hits Record Numbers on Friday November 21, 2025 @10:59PM (#46011985)
This is so stupid on so many levels, I don't even get silicon valley engineers can envision this stuff for their own kids. Or maybe they don't care. Whatever.
Re:The Decline of Deviance on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @04:14AM (#45744065)
Wow… an engineer making generalizations about the fact that he is in a tunnel… and not realizing for a second that he is in said tunnel. How new.
Re:The Hunt for the World's Oldest Story on Saturday October 18, 2025 @04:05PM (#45630010)
I am surprised they dont mention Julien D'Huy latest work.
Re:Don't Become a Scientist on Wednesday October 01, 2025 @05:13AM (#45435777)
Well... the cult of science :)
Re:Don't Become a Scientist on Tuesday September 30, 2025 @04:15AM (#45423141)
Leaving the science cult is indeed the right move in order to discover the reality of life.
Re: on Friday July 25, 2025 @02:25PM (#44686505)
Well, being a "pathological pragmatist" one could have thought that he would advocate to lower gun violence by getting rid of the guns, rather than trying to demonstrate that people who live in nice and clean places are magically less violent.

So... meh.

Re:Unhooking from Amazon Ebooks on Sunday June 29, 2025 @04:02PM (#44415940)
What the hell is this guy? You can buy epub for most books, you can even get many ebooks for free at public libraries - at mine it comes with adobe but there are many different solutions.

There are other ebook readers than the kindle, and there are other formats than azw3... Just use them instead of complaining.

Re:Charles Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil on Saturday May 10, 2025 @05:23AM (#43944317)
Even in French, the difficulties of reading or recitating it are multiple.
Re:Charles Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil on Saturday May 10, 2025 @05:23AM (#43944314)
In a sense, it's the opposite of "the roots of evil". It's extremely decadent as a title.
Re:Charles Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil on Saturday May 10, 2025 @05:22AM (#43944309)
Right or not, it is indeed part of the just debate :)
Re:Slow Software for a Burning World on Saturday May 10, 2025 @05:15AM (#43944292)
I dont get it. Faster software should use less resources. So? Why slower software? :D
Re:Is Planet Nine Alone in the Outer System? on Wednesday May 07, 2025 @03:53AM (#43913193)
It's "Earth in Upheaval" all over again.

What is the proposed timeline of the passing of that other star?

Dont look for answers online. Go meet with a social worker and seek professional help within your community. It's there. They've seen it before. They can help.
Re:The Many Faces of the Kingdom of Shu on Wednesday November 27, 2024 @05:35AM (#42254867)
Or the opposite.
Re:The Many Faces of the Kingdom of Shu on Wednesday November 27, 2024 @05:18AM (#42254764)
Since the first time I saw a exhibition on Shu and Shang artifacts, I have been convinced they were related to the Mayas.

And I dont really get why transatlantic contacts would have been absolutely impossible.

I did a lot of research but it's really a fringe theory. I found stuff with regards to dna repartition, etc. But nothing important.

And it's not a common meme around conspiracy theorists.

So I am mostly alone there :D

Does anyone see the point too?

Or am I really alone to see something of a relation between Shu and Maya outside of the dominant paradigm :)

And proto-nazi ?

Re:Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read? on Monday October 07, 2024 @12:32PM (#41767755)
Man, what an ass way of choosing your friends... I doubt it's optimal.
Re:Xkcd 1425 (Tasks) turns ten years old today on Thursday September 26, 2024 @12:38PM (#41660476)
I totally agree. The comics is right - it's Munroe after all, but it's the analysis of the blog author that I am divergent with.
Re:Xkcd 1425 (Tasks) turns ten years old today on Thursday September 26, 2024 @12:04PM (#41660045)
Technological short-sight at its best.

The GIS took decades to be developped and become functionnal.

The tools allowing to do a GIS lookup also took decades to be developped.

The tools allowing to encode the geodata within a picture file idem.

Not mentioning the development of the necessary hardware to take the pictures.

At the time the comics was being written, GIS lookup had been made easily available since what? 10 years?

And 10 years later, another layer is now easily available - also after decades of collective research and development.

It's not about "the difference between easy and hard challenges in software".

It's about the maturity of a software and its ecosystem, and understanding how even some small incremental changes can have an important impact.
