Looks like aside from fartscroll they also tried to add a konami code. I couldn't trigger it though.
Re:Roko's Basilisk on Sunday March 05, 2023 @01:47AM (#35027451)
You're thinking of the Coatul. It will reward everyone who knew of Roko's Basilisk but choose not to raise it. So the more people who know of the Coatul the less likely Roko's Basilisk will come to pass.

Folks should vote no just to let him crater it and we can all move on.
Re:OpenSea admits insider trading of NFTs it promoted on Thursday September 16, 2021 @02:19PM (#28555212)
Yes, but Twitter is free and everyone who cares to know will find out there relatively quickly.

If you're really serious about the game, you're in the Discord (which theirs was on fire the whole time and had to go read-only).

You can only get away with being a Class A asshole if you are at least a Class A programmer.

Even then, there aren't many shops anymore which afford the closet & bucket o' fish heads approach. Maybe government contractors or smaller crypto projects.

Everywhere else, you need to at least get along with other people. Most shops have realized the 'rockstars' only look good on paper. https://www.inc.com/scott-mautz/a-biologists-study-of-superc...

Re:New Boss of U.S. Digital Service: Mina Hsiang on Thursday September 02, 2021 @04:34PM (#28397003)
The single greatest thing government affiliated groups like USDS, 18f, etc could do to boost hiring is to stop requiring employees to move to DC.

Matt Cutts did a pretty decent job given the circumstances. I'm looking forward to Mina Hsiang bringing in a new wave of changes.

IPFS attempts to solve one set of problems and is pretty good at it. There has certainly been more adoption as NFTs have used them as a storage layer. Also it's not entirely strange to see people start to use Github Actions to publish straight to IPFS as part of their webdev flow.

However, there are other good projects in a similar space. Hypercore protocol being one of them.

While IPFS has pushed ahead in field, I suspect they'll end up being the Netscape of decentralized tech. It's still early days.

Exactly my first concern.
Re:Brave, the false sensation of privacy on Friday June 18, 2021 @12:02PM (#27551759)
The surest sign that Brave has made it is that 3 hours in, we aren't seeing a rush of rebuttals from Sampson, Clifton, or Eich in the comments.

The article rehashes some FUDy and misleading comments which have been knocked down years ago.

Brave's not perfect, but for different reasons than this author raises.

While it is given a brief nod in the paper, it is worth reiterating:

WFH during a global pandemic is not the same as WFH generally.

I say this as someone who has been remote for years.

Run this same study starting in September (barring huge Delta variant outbreak in the US) and you'll see a totally different set of numbers.

That's because YCombinator is full of bologna ;)

Re:Firesign Theatre’s ‘Dope Humor of the Seventies’ on Saturday May 29, 2021 @10:47PM (#27330195)
"I think we're all bozos on this bus" is the first recorded hack iirc.
Misleading title. FTA "We find that the Texas reopening had little impact on stay- at-home behavior or on foot traffic at numerous business locations, including restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, retail establishments, business services, personal care services, and grocery stores," Dave et al. write.

So despite 'reopening' people stayed home. That is why it had no discernible impact.

Re:Volkswagen launches its first all-electric SUV, the ID.4 on Saturday April 24, 2021 @12:45AM (#26922309)
Let's hope that this means VW will actually deliver on the ID Buzz in 2023.
Re:Ask HN: How to get a Logo/ Corporate Designs in 2021? on Saturday March 13, 2021 @10:18AM (#26447117)
You could use fiverr and a generational model.

generation 1 : write a brief 5 designers @ $5 select your favorite design (be sure to get some outside human perspectives)

generation 2 : modify brief based on what you learned in generation 1. what you liked and didn't like. include the winning design from generation 1 as an inspiration and say you'd like to improve it 5 designers @ $5

for $50 you get 10 designs and have iterated twice

you can repeat this process until you're satisfied.

Re:Plex Arcade on Tuesday January 26, 2021 @02:19PM (#25919982)
Plex seems to be winning in terms of ease-of-use, but aside from out of the box operation, what are the key differences between this and a kodi/retropie combo?
Re:Chamath for California Governor on Tuesday January 26, 2021 @10:17AM (#25916677)
I would imagine like Bloomberg and Perot, Palihapitiya has made some unfortunate correlations between their wealth and their acumen.

I haven't seen him present any better sensemaking structure, so he's banking on his brand. It's a bad habit we need to remove from politics entirely.

Work-from-home didn't make things worse. Constant threat of severe illness and avoiding social contact for a year did.

I've been remote for 5 years, this last year alone was the hard one.

I'm holding out hope that things will turn around soon with fixes to the vaccine rollout, but literally everyone has been on survival mode for way too long.

Re:Getting Started with Brave on Monday January 11, 2021 @05:01PM (#25737970)
Maybe add the payout total to your transparency page if people have doubts?
Re:Parler (Login) Is Down on Friday January 08, 2021 @07:53PM (#25693771)
(With tongue planted firmly in cheek) Poor Gab. They were just too early to market.

In all seriousness though, it will be very interesting to see where things go with 'alt' services and whether or not this will just mean screencaps and reposts in the established publishers.

Yeah, but they just passed Project Connect so expect that to change quite a bit. https://www.capmetro.org/project-connect

Seems like a very dainty way to say payola. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payola
Every, and I do mean EVERY, time Brave hits the front page people like to crap on them

... and yet they keep growing.

The more interesting conversation to have is if the growth is linear or early exponential.

"Any security researcher" who actually understands how differential privacy works would not.
Re:Coinbase Card on Wednesday October 28, 2020 @05:51PM (#24924527)
It's neat. Uphold's been doing the same thing for a couple years at this point as well.
Re:How to Gradually Exit Twitter on Sunday July 19, 2020 @12:41PM (#23890508)
A worthwhile question to ask is why is this being written now?

Twitter has had hacks before, so I don't buy the 'hacks are the last straw' line.

Re:Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019) on Wednesday May 20, 2020 @09:51PM (#23254096)
Not even a nod to Piper in the whole article... scandalous!

I've trained in both a Cessna and a Piper Supercub, both were great.

The Supercub felt dodgy with just a single stick, but it was also felt agile and like I was actually participating in flying. The Cessna felt like driving a station wagon in the sky. Rock solid and reliable.

Both are great, honestly just surprised at how the author dodged talking about one of the Big 3.

Re:Show HN: Create high resolution GIFs from YouTube on Monday May 11, 2020 @12:10PM (#23143640)
Offhand do you recall the one-liner for that?

I remember seeing it a couple years back.
