If the US gov does try to limit all frontier models from being used outside the US, I wonder how that would go with Google and Deepmind?

They say it's first operational system in it's class, but it seems very similar to the Australian Apollo system, with Apollo being able to go up to 150kW

I'm Australian and neither any Meta platform nor Reddit have asked to verify my ID, as I presume both just inferred that I was over 16 and that was adequate.

The thing is most of the forks are still using some/all of the on device ML models, they're just not advertising them as AI. From Waterfoxs announcement of "Not using AI*"

>The asterisk acknowledges that “AI” has become a catch-all term. Machine learning tools like local translation engines (Bergamot) are valuable and transparent. Large language models, in their current black-box form, are neither.

This really isn't the case. Firefox has almost 200 million users, yet sub 10% of them have uBlock Origin installed:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/ublock-origin...

Less than half have any extensions installed (with extensions include language packs):

https://data.firefox.com/dashboard/usage-behavior

The users who talk about Firefox online are not the average user.

Not who you were asking but my reasons for thinking Brave is a joke.

First they're a cypto/addtech company, which is a type of company I wouldn't trust to run my browser. And this has resulted in them doing things in the past like:

Blocking ads and replacing them with their own ad networks ads: https://archive.is/W0k4j

Their rewards crypto was opt-in for creators. Making it look like creators were openly asking for donations in Braves crypto currency without their consent. They had to change this due to complaints: https://brave.com/blog/rewards-update/

Inserting their own affiliate links: https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/8/21283769/brave-browser-aff...

Installing a non-free VPN without user consent: https://www.xda-developers.com/brave-browser-installs-vpn-wi...

They criticise the effectiveness of ad block testing websites, and urge people to use and trust privacytests.org instead. They fail to mention the conflict of interest in that privacytests is run by a Brave employee. https://brave.com/blog/adblocker-testing-websites-harm-users...

Is that their core user base, or just the vocal user base online? Only 5-10% of their user base have UBO installed (FF has almost 200 million users, extension store reports ~10 million UBO installs).

Firefox isn't LibreWolf, it's user base are just average people, not much different than that of Chrome, Safari, or Edge.

Re:Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo on Tuesday December 16, 2025 @06:41PM (#46296300)
They're the only modern usable browser engine not developed by a multi-trillion dollar corp. I'd say that's a pretty big achievement.

Is this even the case? UBO has ~10 million users going by the extension store, Firefox has over 150 million users.

So less than 10% of Firefox installs also have UBO.

Re:VPN location claims don't match real traffic exits on Saturday December 13, 2025 @06:06PM (#46259107)
What actual extra privacy does that add though? You still need to connect to them from your IP address, which can be traced back to you.
OP is in Australia. Most stores that sell gift cards have loyalty cards that give points for gift card purchases. And a few times a year they give bonus points (e.g. 10x) on gift cards, that can result in an equivilent 10-15% saving.

You can even use this to get an effective discount on hardware, as you can use your Apple account balance to buy from Apple.

Re:Size of Life on Thursday December 11, 2025 @02:18PM (#46235867)
From what I remember from undergrad the reason they're not life is that they lack their own metabolism, they use the metabolism of host cells. And metabolism needs to be a constant thing, they don't have any when outside a cell.
As an Australian the only platforms I have that asked for an age check were Discord and Bluesky. Which is funny as neither came under this legislation, they're implementing this because they chose to.

Nothing from Reddit or any of the Meta platforms which have to comply with this legislation.

An an Australian, the social media ban legislation specifically requires than non-ID methods be available (it specifically says that also included digital ID).

The selection of games for macOS is tiny compared to Windows, and even Linux now due to proton. For example Paradox games used to have decent support with macOS, but now Europa Universalis V is Windows only (but works with proton) so I can't currently play it.

Samsungs newer Exynos are somewhat like this, their GPUs are based on AMDs RNA2.
The law speifically reuired non-ID methods

> Specifies that no Australian will be compelled to use government identification (including Digital ID) to prove their age online, and platforms must offer reasonable alternatives to users,

> Establishes robust privacy protections, placing limitations on the use of information collected by platforms for the purposes of satisfying the minimum age obligation, and requiring the destruction of information following its use

Re:Valve is about to win the console generation on Thursday November 13, 2025 @03:57PM (#45920443)
I think Digital Foundry has expects the performance to be bit below the base PS5 in most cases. It has a new generation of CPU/GPU than the PS5, but less cores/ CUs. VRAM is also only 8GB, PCs generally need more than that to match PS5 settings.

We are here in Australia from the 10th December this year.

What's Apples profit margins on their hardware? Just from that they're already getting what all that is worth.

The 30% app store cut is just rent seeking.

Say no one builds their own, and iPhones now only have first party apps. How many people are going to buy them now? How well did the Windows phone sell with no app support? How's the app support on the Apple Vision Pro?

The idea that devs owe Apple for use of their SDKs and API development is absurd. Apple already profits from it as people by their phones due to the amount of third party app support. See how Apple's profits go when WhatsApp, Instagram, Spotify, Netflix Uber, banking apps, are all no longer available on their devices.

I've heard that too. And also Xbox had 2 different DirectX APIs, one more customised to the console, and one that's the standard Windows DirectX which is not as performant. From what I've heard most devs used the latter as it made porting the PC version of the game easier, and sales on Xbox would be tiny compared to PlayStation (1/3rd the install base, sales even less than that due to Xbox users not buying games and just using gamepass) there was less incentive to optimise.
