Re:Can a small search engine take on Google? on Monday April 15, 2013 @07:47AM (#5550898)
Thank you. I enjoyed Clusty when it first came out; I thought the clustering feature at the heart of it was really innovative, and the UI was nice and clean. But after the new rules came out, I abandoned it completely.
National vs. local news is an important distinction here that many of these "The key to happiness is ignoring the news" posts miss.

The breathless CNN story about the latest missing white woman might not be relevant to your life, but your local newspaper's stories about property taxes, parking fees, local entertainment events and people in your community most certainly are.

Were you responsible for the moralist censorship of Clusty's results or did that come after you sold it?

Re:A new system for reading on Tuesday April 02, 2013 @07:39AM (#5478699)
Most introductory programming books lay down the basic principles of programming, describe the specific language the particular book covers, and give you enough of a sense of how you can apply the knowledge to real-world applications that you should be able to decide within 100 pages whether it's for you.
Re:The DDoS that almost broke the Internet on Wednesday March 27, 2013 @01:45PM (#5450875)
After seeing the headline and the photos, I kept expecting to read that it was some sort of composite "sketch" of suspects in the DDoS attack compiled from real photos. I am not familiar with what the members of Massive Attack look like and did not make that connection. Seems like poor photo usage.
Re:Your Kindle got stolen? Don't count on Amazon's help on Friday February 08, 2013 @12:46PM (#5189096)
The point of the analogy is that recovering and locating stolen property is the responsibility of law enforcement, not manufacturers & retailers.

If thieves take your car for a joyride, do you email Ford to complain?

Never heard of it.
Re:Show HN: a blog search engine on Friday January 11, 2013 @02:13PM (#5044395)
What advantages does Soto Search offer over Google Blogsearch (http://www.google.com/blogsearch) or Icerocket (http://www.icerocket.com/)?
Created using "BetterInternet," but webkit-only websites do not a better Internet make.

"Notability" attempts to give Wikipedia the credibility that "anyone can edit this" takes away.

Re: painting the lock on your sliding glass door white -- this is a good tip for gun safeties as well. Put some red paint on the part that's exposed when the safety is off and then remember "red = dead."
