Teen shows with 30 year olds by the fourth season... so that Steve Buscemi bit in 30 Rock will now be the norm.
Re:Half-Life 3 is reportedly playable in its entirety on Tuesday May 06, 2025 @07:41PM (#43910796)
I want to believe...

Nah, fuck it, I believe.

If true, I'll rejoice, if false, nothing changes. Sort of like Pascal's Wager... Gaben's Wager if you will.

Re:New 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 on sale now at $120 on Thursday January 09, 2025 @06:21AM (#42644159)
I'm not the OP but have a little collection of mini pcs (5 of them) so, if you'll allow me, I'll comment on why I have them...

The form factor is very convenient, two of them are my mother and my wife's "desktop" pcs - they're both attached to their monitors and, with wireless keyboards and mice they stay discreet and don't take up a lot of room but are very good desktops for daily email reading, recipe browsing and facebooking. My mother and wife don't complain about them - they're more interested in the the compact size and staying out of the way than the performance.

Two of them are small servers that I run stuff that my Raspberry Pis can't handle (I still don't have a Pi 5, WAY too expensive around here) - quick, low noise and isn't too power hungry. Runs linux perfectly and I never have a problem with software (the n100 is a great little CPU). I have 2 because of some weird sale on Aliexpress - 2 for the price of 1-and-a-half was something I couldn't pass up on.

The final one is attached to our main TV, it's a converted TV box (running Armbian) that's an amazingly powerful piece of cheap hardware. It's our main movie viewer (off of our DLNA NAS) it can hand 1080p video just fine on a crappy 5V power supply.

Somewhere in the US Midwest, Jeff Geerling suddenly decides "nah, I don't wanna recompile the kernel."
Not gonna lie, this is awesome.

Cybergoth Dance Party and Techno Viking are now even more important parts of our collective human heritage.

Edit: It seems Cybergoth Dance Party was shot in Dusseldorf, my life is now even more full of lies.

Re:Google restricts Gemini chatbot election answers on Wednesday March 13, 2024 @07:43AM (#39690294)
Jeez, it's already hard to get answers from Gemini (the free version at least) without it passing judgement and whining about what I'm asking.
Re:Bluesky signups are now open to the public on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @12:28PM (#39277403)
Hey! Thanks for the heads up, signed up and now I'm going to do what I did when I signed up to Twitter in the deep past... lurk.

Re:Voyager 1 stops communicating with Earth on Thursday December 14, 2023 @07:14PM (#38649368)
If NASA can't contact it again and it has bravely gone into the great darkness alone with a piece of us, let's hope it's eventually found by a race capable of understanding the fragment of memory it carries.

If you're lost V'ger, safe travels.

Re:Open source email pioneer Roundcube joins the Nextcloud family on Wednesday November 29, 2023 @07:22AM (#38458523)
That's a relief.

We just swapped out our old webmail system (made from twigs, mud and spit) for a nice and elegant Roundcube install with custom plugins and I was already dreading having to change it.

Re:Rockwell Retro Encabulator [video] on Sunday November 26, 2023 @09:15AM (#38421737)
There was one of these about IT that made my mind melt - I understood all the words but it didn't make sense and I kinda mentally blanked out to the point I don't even remember what it was (but I'm sure it was on youtube as I saw it on Cytu.be).

I watched it a few times but then it just vanished and I never found it again.

A shame I didn't save it.

Re:Why did base64 win against uuencode? on Monday November 20, 2023 @07:28PM (#38357075)
You know, when I first got into binary encoding into text I asked myself this very question but never put any effort into looking it up.

Now, 25+ years later, I have some answers - thanks!

Re:Ethernet Is Still Going Strong After 50 Years on Friday November 17, 2023 @08:44AM (#38303431)
I'd love to hear all the disruptive, trendy, innovative and blockchain-focused tech that'll cost me a fortune instead of relying on cheap ethernet.

I have a massive soft spot for these troupes/groups with their intentionally shitty costumes and loud (annoying, sometimes? usually?) music.

Here are two of my favorite videos - possibly the two most famous examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmJ0tzAZ4aM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEt5lYXwT-U

I talked with him briefly some 20+ years ago and he showed me his laptop with Free software. As I was younger back then I found it quaint but as I sit here and realize I'm doing something in the same vein, doing things thanks to a mountain of Free software.

As I am prone to do when I'm brought back to that moment where I was just chatting with the RMS, I smile and wonder how many other dumb college compsci kids were exposed to a different kind of way of doing things that basically changed their lives.

Get well soon Mr. Stallman!

Dunno but it's definitely making me more creative - I've branched from american, brazilian, italian, french and japanese to adding chinese, korean, vietnamese, scottish, english and canadian.
Re:Vincent van Gogh's paintings and drawings on Wednesday June 28, 2023 @12:36PM (#36508924)
As an aside, Broey Deschanel just released a video discussing the van Gogh "Experience"-style exhibitions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOFBAJStuk8
Holy shit! Game, optimizations, code, test suite and even a simple 3D render - not to mention a well edited video game with a great sense of humor, gags, memes and the obvious next step already in the works.

This guy is going places!!

Re:Wow, Is Apple’s Vision Pro Loaded with Pixels on Friday June 09, 2023 @08:14PM (#36266126)
Wow! What are they going to do with so many pixels!?
So it's a boring version of Mornington Crescent?
Re:Reverse engineer Stable Diffusion images on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @05:14AM (#34706271)
It's not terribly bad at guessing!

I made a few generic military guys for a side project and the actual prompt isn't too far from what I used.

I saw it and I started crying, it's beautiful beyond description and belief.

Re:When I made another Monkey Island on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @09:59AM (#31248395)
I'm not sure a major problem with the prequels was the aesthetic.

It never bothered me that it felt more "modern" than the original trilogy, it bothered me (and plenty of others) that the story wasn't good. For something that was in his head for such a long time, it came out half-baked.

Re:Bits of advice I wish I had known on Thursday April 28, 2022 @09:19PM (#31200261)
Let me add one that's not on the list:

"The best way to get a correct answer on the internet is to post an obviously wrong answer and wait for someone to correct you."

- M. G. Scott

My travel PC is a Raspberry pi4 - when home it's my home server. I run it off an SSD but that's recent because I bought one of those adorable NES cases. I carry it around with a Logitech keyboard/trackpad combo and an HDMI cable or two (USB power cables are already part of my travel kit) and, while not the most powerful thing, it's light and rugged enough for how I travel.

It runs what I need on the go (browsing, youtube and video/photo editing, not to mention SSH and VPN software in case I need to hop back into my work's network), it fits nicely in my carry-on luggage with my tshirts and socks.

I also have a chromebook that I use for basically the same things - it's not great but it's also enough for me when I travel.

Re:Why German bread is the best in the world (2018) on Wednesday March 16, 2022 @02:45PM (#30702451)
That's an interesting idea...

I was thinking about which types of breads that I really like, enough to go out of my way to buy and they're mostly German (or german-style) breads because they have interesting textures and tastes.

Freshmeat nostalgia and Userfriendly going dark on the same day.

I'm so damn old...

I just found out today that Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda rebooted Geeks in Space (a while back, it seems). Rob, Jeff and CowboyNeal's original run of GIS was one the first podcasts I ever listened to and it was glorious.
