I've done some minor stuff in MS PowerBI and PowerQuery/PowerPivot that I think meets your need. It's pretty nifty.

Yes. Also, the upper limit on the dynamic range of the telephone network is somewhere around 3400 Hz, well within the range of human hearing. This protocol is designed to send data in a frequency range that most people can't hear, or at least can't hear very well.

Well, I suppose it depends on what you mean by 'affordable'. 10G is now affordable for small businesses, when up until recently it was strictly the domain of the large datacenter. I wouldn't put it in my house yet, but I see no reason to assume that 10G copper switches won't get to that price point eventually.

So use twinax.

No, that switch is 10G copper, no sfp+ required. Thunderbolt and 10G ethernet aren't really competing in the same space, so I'm not sure why you brought it up.

Well, technically you can now get into 10Gb for around $150 per port. http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-12-Port-ProSafe-Gigabit-Switch...

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but all combined CO/smoke detectors I have ever owned have a distinctive alarm for CO. Usually a spoken alert warning of CO.

Sorry, where did you see that?
Isn't the real problem that it sucks to drive 7 hours?

Well, you would no longer need to evacuate the tube...

it would be simpler and more effective to integrate this technology into drink straws and other paraphernalia. Bars will be hesitant to replace their entire glassware supply.

You are correct. There is very little half-duplex around these days except in some carrier ethernet situations.

Welcome to the world of government contracting. There was a requirement for two vendors, they got 5 proposals, they chose what they believed to be the best two, at the price the vendors specified. They weren't allowed to haggle.
Re:A gentlemen's agreement

The real reason not to do this is that it makes you look like a scumbag. It's not in your interest to make that association in your customer's minds. For instance, I run a small datacenter on the east coast. We had no downtime due to Sandy, but the level of MSP/CoLo/Managed hosting company cold calls I got in the two weeks after trying to use their uptime during the storm as a sales pitch was unbelievable. every single one of them went in my "scumbucket vendor" file.

Re:Windows 8 launch date announced: October 26th
on Thursday July 19, 2012 @12:41PM (#4266832)
I honestly don't find it that unintuitive. I may have a leg up since my primary pointing device is a trackpoint, which makes hitting the screen corners a really easy move. When you hit the corner, there are visual hints that pop up to guide you to the start screen, sidebar thing, or open applications list. there are definitely some things I would have suggested that they do to help people into the new interface, like a guided help or pop-up tips, but a quick google and 30 seconds of reading were really all that was required to get into it.
Re:Windows 8 launch date announced: October 26th
on Thursday July 19, 2012 @08:49AM (#4265703)
I was of the same opinion before I tried 8, but after a week of use it's actually far easier and better from my perspective. I do not miss the start menu, the start screen is better in almost all ways. it does take some getting used to though. (Oops, I suppose this will be rated as fake by Toshio, downthread, who thinks he can detect fake sentiment in online postings. Guess I'd better report to the corporate overlords for my chip implant.)
Re:That’s No Phone. That’s My Tracker.
on Thursday July 19, 2012 @06:24AM (#4265323)
I yes, I missed your GGP. But it still doesn't work. If you actively use a hotspot then IP GEO tracks you. If you use wireless data then you can be tracked by cell tower triangulation by the network operator, by GPS, and also by passive wifi tracking that we've been discussing.
I suppose that you might be able to try tunneling all of your outbound data through a VPN tunnel, but at that point you might as well go back to using internet cafes and phone booths.
I prefer misdirection. Set up a device that will appear to be 'you' in many places at once. For instance, google and facebook both routinely believe that I commute from New York to London at least 15 times a day.
