I stopped buying my once in a while bottle since wine prices are crazy high, like 30-50 for a standard bottle now at my local store

Not worth it to me at least

Yeah People thought the same about Microsoft buying Nokia which is more similar to this

Company flagging in one area trying to jump start its business there

I’m worried all this crap will distract and damage the things they are great at (rockets) similar to what happened to Tesla where outside the stock price it’s pretty dismal
In my experience ( to be fair which was a while ago ) things like that just end up making things worse trapping people and leading to a lot of lashing out

Honestly education really feels overthought and micromanaged already the whole setup is unhealthy

Worst part about the ai era is that so many are convinced they can and need to be on top of it to the extent of losing their core competency while mass producing trash

It’s good stuff but there’s room for a lot of things

Everyone I know is barely holding on, markets doing well though but tbh it feels like a mad scramble last resort sort of thing
My respects to a real one, hope it turns out ok
ill stick to the bus

Re:Venezuela's capital hit by explosions, smoke seen on Saturday January 03, 2026 @02:37PM (#46480650)
yeah it feels like the sort of thing that will go sideways easily, I get the "optimistic" angle who doesn't love strong men being removed from power, but it seems more like a recipe for civil war that we're forced to be heavily involved in

will all of the military and paramilitary forces there suddenly become to compliant? will other nations try to turn it into a proxy war to drag the us down possibly as payback for Ukraine?

maybe everyone moves on I have no idea, I'd personally rather just not be involved

Re:Venezuela's capital hit by explosions, smoke seen on Saturday January 03, 2026 @02:43AM (#46473687)
I think it will be regarded as a poor move long term to so boldly put the us stamp on what will undoubtedly become a chaotic situation over the next decade or two

I'm admittedly somewhat ignorant of all the details but I don't see what the real benefit is

my only guess is that it's to disincentivize the Russians and Chinese from being more involved in South America but it feels like it could do the opposite and act as an annoying wedge

Re:2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop on Friday January 02, 2026 @08:22PM (#46471739)
I'm honestly not sure Microsoft even cares about Windows anymore, to me it's felt like they burned everything internally during Windows8 and the ValueAct battles sealed it .. hell they even entirely removed the Taskbar back then

I've always wondered what things would be like the Microsoft break up went though, I really do think personal computing would be better off and the people involved would probably have even more money to boot

the T series thinkpads tend to have a high repairability rating (9/10 on ifixit ) and easy affordable access to parts, it's the X series that's a PITA imo

simple, very little time investment required and avoids most modern fuckery

I've seen one personally, recovering gambling addict who constantly falls off the wagon

I don't dig into the details and obviously everyone is diffrent but I imagine not being able to avoid the constant bombardment when trying to quit isn't a good thing
